Title: Encountering Jesus: Bread of Life-Part 1 Scripture: John 6:22-40 Date: 7/24/2016 Bible Version: NKJV BOTTOM LINE: Jesus did not primarily come to take care of our physical needs, He came to save our souls. Vs. 22 On the following day- The day after the feeding of the 5,000, the night after Jesus crossed the sea of Galilee. People woke up and expected to see Jesus. No other boat there- The crowd that was with Jesus and the disciples noted that the disciples left on a boat. They also noted that Jesus did not leave with them, but was gone. Vs. 23 Other boats came from Tiberias- Jesus and the disciples were not there so these people saw an opportunity to find and follow Jesus. Vs. 24 Came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus- They traveled 3-4 miles across the Sea of Galilee to the Capernaum. We can seek Jesus in a multitude of ways: In morning prayer. During our lunch break. During our commute. The point is to SEEK after Jesus with your life.
Vs. 25 They found Him- Jesus was now in Capernaum. Rabbi when did you come here?- Jesus never answers this question. In lieu of answering their question we will see that He engages them in a very deep, heart felt way by asking them a question. Vs. 26 I say to you, Seek me- We can note that many of these people probably were at the miraculous feeding. Jesus speaks directly to them. They serve not the Lord Jesus Christ, but their own bellies. - Trapp Vs. 27 Do not Labor for the food which perishes- Jesus make a contrast. They were looking for material food (which perishes). Jesus makes a contrast between food that nourishes temporarily and food which nourishes eternally. God,has made us for more than just acquiring material possessions. But for the food which endures to everlasting- Feeding yourself takes effort. Vs. 28 What shall we do- what do we have to do or check off the list to get the blessing? Man has such a tendency to want to live by a list. Christians are no different.
Vs. 29 God wants us to believe upon Jesus, love and obey Him, not complete some check list. Vs. 30 What sign will you perform- They were hearing but not listening. They were so focused on seeing what Jesus might do next that they missed the point. Don't get so locked into the material that you miss the spiritual.- Guzik Miracles don't produce lasting faith.-courson Vs. 31-32 My Father gives you the true bread- Jesus always glorious the Father. Notice how He points to the Father of true bread from heaven. Moses didn't provide the mana, God did. Vs. 33-34 Lord give us this bread always-they wanted the material, Jesus was giving the spiritual. Put your confidence in Jesus, not bread or other material things. Vs. 35 Shall never be utterly destitute of grace and glory. - Trapp
Vs. 36-37 The one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out- Anyone can come to Jesus. The most sinful, the most evil...all are welcome. Vs 38 But the will of Him who sent Me- Glory to the father. Jesus did not come for His will, but rather the Father s. Vs. 39 Lose nothing- Jesus will keep us. He's not going to lose or misplace you. We can find eternal safety in Jesus. God has given us a priceless gift through His Son Jesus. Vs. 40 Jesus gives eternal life.
