January 28, 2018 St. Kevin R.C. Church Page 2 Q. I recently heard the news that the Bayside Campus of Divine Wisdom Catholic Academy and St. Pancras School in Glendale are closing. Why? A. It was unfortunate and very sad news for all of us as we learned the fate of both schools. In the case of Divine Wisdom Catholic Academy, Bayside Campus, formerly known as St. Robert Bellarmine School, the reasons were due to declining enrollment and changing demographics. Technically, Divine Wisdom Catholic Academy is consolidating its Bayside and Douglaston campuses later this year. In terms of St. Pancras School, this school year only 105 students were enrolled in the K-8 facility, creating a budget deficit of more than $250,000. Please pray for a smooth transition for all students, families, teachers and staff who will be required to begin a new journey in the upcoming school year. In a continued effort to preserve Catholic Education, if there is anything St. Kevin Church/St. Kevin Catholic Academy can do to assist any of our neighbors or friends during this transitional time, please do not hesitate to reach out to me personally. Ash Wednesday Mass and Prayer Service Schedule Masses with Distribution of Ashes 9:00 AM and 7:30 PM Prayer Service with Distribution of Ashes 3:00 PM Repent, and believe in the Gospel Stewardship Thought In today s Gospel we hear proclaimed the beginning of Jesus public ministry. He teaches. He heals. And all are amazed. By their baptism, Christian stewards realize they are called to do the same in their lives. They are called to be the light of Christ each day. As we bring closure to the beginning of this new year, now is a good time to ask the Lord to fill our hearts with courage and faith, so that we too may publicly minister in his name; that we may be liberated from our insecurities and fear so that we can share the Gospel authoritatively and work to heal at least one wounded relationship in the coming months ahead.

January 28, 2018 St. Kevin R.C. Church Page 6 Vocation Awareness My Simple Walk to Consecration I was the oldest in what I would say was a good Catholic family, not overly religious, but definitely faithful to Jesus. My mother was a good Catholic, and my brother, two sisters and I would go to Mass with her every Sunday. We would also pray the rosary every night, even if we didn t feel like it or were just too tired. My mother had a great devotion to our Blessed Mother and we would attend the Marian service every evening during the month of May. My father was killed during WW II when a bomb fell in the valley where he and his cousin were walking home. His cousin did not even get a scratch I was five years old and this was my first experience with the quick and unexpected changes of life. This left my mother, at the age of 24, with four children to raise on her own. I grew up in a difficult time, because the war caused us to move from one place to another. I remember at the age of 12 or 13 my friends and I decided to do First Friday devotions. We would get up at 6 AM, run to church where the priest would open the door and let us in so we could receive Holy Communion, then run home to catch the 7 AM bus to school. At 16, I was interested in the idea of dating, loved to dance and go out with my friends. Even then, though, one day when I was on a very long bus ride something was calling me, but I just pushed it away. That was the beginning. My friend and I taught religious education, but in Italy religious education was called Catholic Action. She invited me to a service at a Bethany House. I remember that day well - I dropped my brother and two sisters off at the Don Bosco Recreation Center and the first step toward my journey began. A Bethany is the house of fraternal living for the Apostolic Oblates. An Oblate is a consecrated lay person. They wear regular clothes because the founder, Bishop Giaquinta, believed Oblates should be like the leaven in bread. You don t see it but without it, the bread will not rise. Bishop Giaquinta felt that a Secular Institute should be made up of lay people in the world, but not of the world. Their presence may help others to be aware of and respond to their Call to Holiness. Just as other lay people, they have to work in society while living out their vocation. This is the Charism of the Apostolic Oblates. After I met the founder of the Apostolic Oblates and the Pro Sanctity Movement, I started spending more time with the Oblates. I also researched other congregations: the Salesian Sisters and the Sisters of St. Paul, but I kept hearing that call back to the Oblates. I really liked the idea of being part of the world but not of the world. My mother had a strict rule; no one moves out of the house until they are 21. So everyone in my family stayed until they were 21 years of age. I was the first to leave, though mother really did not approve of my choice to become an Oblate. She tried to discourage me by not letting me go to many of the activities that were being offered at the Bethany but, in the end, she said, you are 21, and gave her approval. So, after spending one year participating in the various activities and helping the Oblates, I applied to the Secular Institute and was accepted for formation. After three years of formation, I took my Private Vows (obedience, poverty, chastity and the promise of apostolate) in church surrounded by my immediate family and fellow Oblates. After 10 years, I took my Final Vows in California in the presence of the founder, Bishop Giaquinta. My missionary work called me to leave Italy and come to the United States: Brooklyn, California, and New York, where I have worked in schools, the Immigration Office, as Pastoral Associate, and currently at Brookdale Hospital as a Catholic Chaplain, all by living the charism and my call to serve the Lord as an Apostolic Oblate. January 28, 2018 St. Kevin R.C. Church Page 10 The Impact of Catholic Educa on Reflections from a St. Kevin School Alumni Stephanie Bonanno Catholic education has made a huge impact on my life and has shaped me into the person I am today. My journey began at St. Kevin School, where I attended from preschool through eighth grade. Catholic school has taught me the importance of education with an emphasis of honoring God and putting Him in the center of my life. The values of Jesus and the importance of community and serving others was always encouraged. Knowing that I continuously had God by my side motivated me to become a high achiever. I furthered my Catholic education at Archbishop Molloy High School. While in high school I became involved in campus ministry and weekend retreats. Additionally, I was a lector, rectory assistant, and vacation bible school volunteer at St. Kevin Church. I continued my Catholic education at St. John s University. While in college, I volunteered as a second grade catechist at St. Kevin s Church. I received my bachelor s degree from St. John s and I decided to continue there for my graduate studies to obtain a Master s of Speech- Language Pathology. As a graduate student, I work for the missions at St. John s Vincentian Institute for Social Action, where we follow in the footsteps of St. Vincent DePaul, working to serve the poor. No matter where my life takes me, it will always lead me back to St. Kevin, and I am eternally grateful to God! A Good Education Can Change Anyone; A Good Teacher Can Change Everything! Mrs. Barbara Graham, or Ms. Barbara Ehrhardt as so many of her former students know her, is celebrating her 30 th year teaching at St. Kevin. Knowing this, Christine, a former student, in the photo below with Mrs. Graham, who always felt encouraged as well as inspired daily by her then teacher, Ms. Ehrhardt, so long ago, wanted to do something extra special to mark this anniversary for her. She knew many friends from elementary school shared her same feelings then and still do to this day about the teacher who not only taught them in class but was the person at St. Kevin who made them feel like they were somebody, somebody that mattered, somebody that could achieve anything as long as they set their minds to it! There s a quote that reads, If we are lucky, we will have maybe five people who will always remember us. Teachers have thousands of people who will remember them for the rest of their lives. Even with the miracle of social media, Christine wasn t able to track down thousands (although she knew they existed), she was able to track down about 50 former students who replied with beautiful heartfelt notes and comments back about Mrs. Graham. Christine was then able to put her plan in motion to create a beautiful tribute book complete with a bow to surprise Barbara this past December, at the St. Kevin Faculty Christmas gathering, with the thoughtful gesture that brought her elementary teacher to loving tears. Today, Christine, is a member of the school s faculty and is honored to have known Barbara since she was 12 years old and will say without question how truly lucky it was to have had her as a teacher but is now honored and truly lucky to call her a friend and colleague! God Bless you Barbara! We Love You! Congratulations on your 30 th Anniversary of teaching and impacting so many lives!

Page 11 www.stkevinflushing.org A Religion Teacher s Prayer (www.thereligionteacher.com.) January 28, 2018 Almighty Father, You sent forth your Son as a beacon of hope for all people. As Teacher, he has given us the prime example of the importance of education. As disciples, we look to him for inspiration and strength. Thank you for the many sisters, brothers, priests, and laypeople who have dedicated their lives in service to our Catholic schools. Thank you for the teachers and administrators who sustain our schools today. Thank you for the parents who have given support and witness to the importance of Catholic education in their daily lives. Thank you for the students who work hard to further their education. Bless St. Kevin Catholic Academy and the many people who advance our mission. May our building be a home for those who seek to grow in faith, knowledge, and service of others. May our community always support one another and exhibit hospitality to newcomers. Fill our minds with knowledge and wisdom. May our understanding of the world help us to grow in appreciation for it. Fill our hearts with gladness. May we always turn to you in times of need. Fill our hands with the tools we need to serve others. May we show them your unceasing love through our actions. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, pray for us.
