WELCOME! Thank you for sharing in our journey during this Holy Year of Mercy December 10, 2015 to November 30, 2016 Forty-six years ago on May 3, my St. Adalbert s School classmates and I received our First Holy Communion, and one of the songs that we learned for and sang that day began: O Lord, who at thy first Eucharist didst pray that all thy church might be for ever one, grant us at every Eucharist to say with longing heart and soul, 'Thy will be done': O may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity. In the next stanza, we went on to sing: make thou our sad divisions soon to cease; draw us the nearer each to each, we plead And concluded by singing: may we be one with all thy church above, one with thy saints in one unbroken peace, one with thy saints in one unbounded love: more blessed still, in peace and love to be one with the Trinity in Unity. Those words and the similar words of oneness and unity that we still sing together relay a beautiful message - our aspiration to be a community of faith drawn together closely around the Table of the Most Blessed Sacrament - Jesus really, truly present in His Body and His Blood. But do our words ring hollow? If we believe what we say/sing than why does it seem that folks try to sit as far away from the altar and each other as possible? The first 6 to 10 rows of pews are almost always empty. Next weekend as we gather for Mass to celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus, we want everyone to fill the church pews beginning with those closest to the Lord s Table. Slide in and make room for fellow parishioners and visitors, so that every pew in the half of the church closest to the altar is completely filled. In this way, we can show to the Lord and othersthat we are one bread, one body - not divided - drawn near to each other - one with the saints - one with the Trinity in Unity. My bet is that you will like it so much that when Ordinary Time starts the following weekend, sitting up front and together will continue and soon become a new, ordinary habit.
