Lesson 8: The Independence (Solitariness) of God And the Corresponding Total Dependence of Mankind Definition: God does not need us or the rest of creation for anything, yet we and the rest of creation can and will glorify, and those of the elect will bring Him joy. A) This attribute of God is commonly viewed as the first of the attributes since all other attributes were derived from this one. God is self-sufficient in everything; in His existence, in His attributes, in His decrees, and in His works. Acts 17:24-25: The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. Job 41:11: who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Whatever is under the whole heaven is mine. Ps. 50:10-12: For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine. B) God exists by virtue of His very nature; He was never created and never came into being. Nothing else in the universe has ever had this characteristic, or ever will. Rev. 4:11: Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created. Ps. 90:2: Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. Ex. 3:14: God said to Moses, I am who I am. And He said, Say this to the people of Israel, I Am has sent me to you. I Am Who I Am takes on the sense I Will Be That I Will Be. C) God did not create human beings in order to make up for a deficiency in Himself. John 17:5, 24: and now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. 24. Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 1

Gen. 1:1; In the beginning, God 1) God was before time was created. He existed in the perfect unity of His nature (though subsisting equally in three Divine Persons) and dwelt all alone. i). There was no earth, no heavens, no angels, and no universe to uphold by the word of His power. ii). He was self-contained, self-sufficient, self-satisfied; in need of nothing. iii). If a universe or angels or any created thing was necessary to Him in any way He would have called them into existence from all eternity. iv). He changes not, therefore His essential glory can be neither augmented nor diminished. 2) It is impossible to bring the Almighty under obligations to the creature. Even with our supposed good works. Job 35:5-8; Look to the heavens and see; And behold the clouds They are higher than you. If you sin, what do you accomplish against Him? Or, if your transgressions are multiplied, what do you do to Him? If you are righteous, what do you give Him? Or what does he receive from your hand? Your wickedness affects a man such as you, And your righteousness a son of man. Luke 17:9-10; Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not. So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do. D) Although God is totally content in Himself, He nonetheless does receive glory and have joy as a result of His creation. Isa. 43:7: everyone who is called by my name, who I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. 1 Cor. 10:31: Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Isa. 62:3-5: You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be 2

married. For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. Zeph. 3:17-18: The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by His love; He will exult over you with loud singing. I will gather those of you who mourn for the festival, so that you will no longer suffer reproach. E) Since God is absolutely independent and has no need of any of us or of the creation, then what gives you and I significance? Answer: God decided that you would be important and meaningful to Him. He decided to glorify Himself in predestinating us to glory. Eph 1:11-12; In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory. F) God s independence means also that God s control is such that every event takes place at His initiative; He never moved to act by anything outside Himself. 1) Although God has the ground of His existence in Himself and He is in Himself His own cause; His creation, on the other hand, has the cause of its existence outside of itself. 2) As the self-existent God, He is not only independent in Himself, but also causes everything to depend on Him. He gives to all, but is enriched by none. Rom 11:33-36; Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor? Or who has first given to Him and it shall be repaid to him? For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen. Heb. 1:3; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, 3) God s control is absolute in that both His decree and His concurrent working in time govern the world exhaustively. So that even within time and space (He is bound by neither) He is the one on whom everything else depends. He 3

determines the course of history before anything is created, so His decree is not dependent on the world. [God s decree is be addressed in another lesson] 4) His control also means that His authority is absolute in that He is self-sufficient in His goodness, righteousness, truth, wisdom, and knowledge. Since He is also immutable, He is the unchanging standard of all creaturely virtues. Truth would be meaningless without His truth, but His truth does not depend on the world He has made. G) God is Lord of all! If God would have entered the world out of need, then He would be dependent on the world; then there would be no clear distinction between Creator and creature. But He enters our world, not out of need, but as the Lord of all. H) God s independence and His church. The attribute of God s independence cannot be reconciled with a man-centered gospel. 1) The church is the body of Christ. The church glorifies God and God gave the church to the Son. Eph. 1:22,23; And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all, 1) The church (His redeemed from all mankind) is totally dependent upon His mercy. Eph. 2:1-7; And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others, But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 2) God is not dependent upon us to receive Him in order to be saved and to be a part of His church. 4

Eph. 2:8,9; for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. i) The act of supposedly receiving God would be a work of man, allowing man to boast and share in the Redeemer s glory, but Christ will receive all the glory. Rev. 14:6,7; Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people saying with a loud voice, Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water. ii) He who glories (boasts), let him glory (boast) in the Lord. (1 Cor. 1:31) 3) God is not dependent upon our good works, but rather He who is the author and finisher of our faith, created us for good works that He has prepared. Eph. 2:10; For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. 4) The God-centered gospel is consistent with God s independence. i) He chose His redeemed; we are not capable of choosing Him. Eph. 1:4; just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, ii) He called and adopted those whom He has chosen. Eph. 15; having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, iii) iv) Not by our will, but rather according to His will. Eph.1:5b; according to the good pleasure of His will. Not by our own righteousness, but rather He made us acceptable. Eph. 1:6; to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. 5

I) Those who grow in their faith become more cognizant of their total dependence upon their Creator. And we glorify God with this God-centered faith. 1) Negatively; let us not be like the church in Laodicea. The self-sufficient, selfcongratulatory, self-aggrandizing, self-promoting pomp and pride of the Laodiceans was not something Jesus would long tolerate. Rev. 3:14-17; because you say, I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked Rev. 3:18,19; I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. 2) No human being can truthfully boast in the presence of God. 1 Cor. 1:26-31; But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God and righteousness and sanctification and redemption that, as it is written, He who glories, let him glory in the Lord. All the good that we have is in and through Christ. It is through Him alone that true wisdom is imparted to the mind Through utter dependence on Christ alone we have true excellency of heart and understanding and actual deliverance or redemption from all misery, as well as the bestowal of all happiness and glory. (Jonathan Edwards, God Glorified in Man s Dependence). 3) Why is it so important that we completely understand our spiritual plight? Answer: God will not tolerate any attitude in us or activity by us that in any way detracts from His glory. Isa. 42:8; I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other 2 Cor. 4:7; But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to god and not us. 1 Pet. 4:10,11; As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. 6
