Psalm 111:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have good understanding. His praise endures forever! There are many ways to begin a new year. Our psalm for this week shares God s Word and God s direction for our beginnings. We begin in the fear of the Lord. One of the common activities at the beginning of a new year is to think back on the year just past. God s people are encouraged to do that in Psalm 111, Great are the works of the Lord (v. 2); He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered (v. 4). God certainly blessed us in 2018. To fear the Lord is to remember all that God has done for us in Christ. In the past year we made many mistakes. There are times we did not treat others as we should have in word or deed. There were many times we did not read God s Word and worship as faithfully as we should. However, to fear the Lord is not to have to fear God s judgment. We know the Lord who is our salvation. We believe in (fear) the Lord who not only was born in Bethlehem but who lived to be our Savior. We fear the Lord who forgives our sins. We have great thanks and respect (fear) for all that God has done for us.
We begin another part of the school year together at our Lutheran school. It is a time for us to grow in wisdom. We will continue to learn many new things in our classrooms and school. Most of all, we begin with God s Word. It is through that Word that our wisdom and fear will grow each day. adapted from LCMS School Ministry Chapel Talk 2018-2019 Chapel offerings this trimester are going to purchase quilts for the beds at the Sheltering Wings domestic violence shelter.
