First Class From the General Decree of 1955 restoring the Liturgy of Holy Week (Maximus Redemptionis). "Let the Faithful be taught about the love with which Christ our Lord on the day before He suffered instituted the sacred and holy Eucharist, Sacrifice and Sacrament, the perpetual memorial of His Passion, to be offered through the ministry of His priests. Let the faithful be invited to render due adoration after the end of Mass to the most Holy Sacrament." The Mass which, by Order of Pope Pius XII should not begin before 5PM or after 8PM (subsequently changed to 4:00PM to 9:00PM), especially commemorates the Institution of the Blessed Eucharist at the Last Supper and the Ordination of the Apostles, and is therefore a Mass of joy and thanksgiving. Therefore, the Church lays aside for the moment the penitential purple and assumes festive white/gold vestments; the Gloria is said. During it, the bells are rung, and from that time until the Easter Vigil they remain silent. On this day, an extra ciborium is consecrated for the "Mass" of the Pre-sanctified (hence the name) on Good Friday. After the Mass, this ciborium is borne in solemn procession during which the "Pange Lingua" is sung. THE ORDER OF MASS PRAYERS AT THE FOOT OF THE ALTAR. When he says the words: "We adore Thee"; "We give Thee thanks"; "Jesus Christ"; and "Receive our prayer", he bows; if seated, he removes his biretta and bows to the Tabernacle; and at the end he signs himself with the Sign of the Cross. The bells are rung and the organ played, after which they are not heard again until the Glória of the Mass of the Easter Vigil, or, in our case, Easter Sunday. Glória in excélsis Deo. MUNDA COR MEUM Silently by the Priest at the Tabernacle, while the Schola finishes the Gradual. In the meantime, an Altar server moves the Missal from the Epistle side of the Altar to the Gospel side. The Master of Ceremonies and the Thurifer assist the Celebrant with the incense preparatory to his incensing of the Missal before the Gospel. This is the same degree of honor provided later at the Consecration to the Physical Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, indicative of the respect owed to the Word of God contained in the Missal. THE CANON OF THE MASS The word Canon is derived from the Greek, and signifies: Rule, direction, order. It was possibly written as early as 253, in Latin; and originally appeared fully formed, without change, precisely as it is today (except for the addition of St. Joseph in 1962). After pronouncing the words of Consecration, the Priest, kneeling, adores the Sacred Host; rising, he elevates It, and then placing It on the corporal, again adores It. Even should this be a High Mass celebrated without Deacon and Subdeacon, it is mandatory that the Blessed Sacrament be incensed at the Elevations.
