Share Jesus Love Style Guide
Overview This style guide outlines the official standards for the writing and design of documents, either for general use or for a specific publication, throughout the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Its purpose to provide uniformity in style and formatting. In this guide you will find: descriptions for both the Archdiocesan logo and mission statement, typeface options, logo formatting instructions, samples of printed materials and the official Archdiocesan color palette. Logo The Archdiocese of Dubuque logo is comprised of two elements: the Metropolitan Cross and the word mark. I. The Metropolitan Cross is always carried in procession before a metropolitan archbishop and dates back to the midthirteenth century. The origin of the second [higher and smaller bar of the cross] lies in the representation of the small board, or plaque, on which was hung the inscription I.N.R.I., an abbreviation that stands for the Latin phrase Iesus Nasarenus Rex Iudaeonum (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). 1 The four images in each corner of the metropolitan cross represent (starting on the top left and moving clockwise) (1) rural life, (2) urban centers, (3) the sacramental water of baptism as well as the Mississippi River, and (4) service to others. II. The word mark contains the official name Archdiocese of Dubuque following the words Roman Catholic in addition to the archdiocesan mission statement: Share Jesus Love. An all-black or all-white logo are the only appropriate versions of the Archdiocese of Dubuque logo. This logo should not be altered in any way. If the arrangement will not fit your application, or if a vendor suggests that you alter the arrangement to accommodate their production methods, please contact the Communications Office and we will work with you and the vendor to find a solution. The Office of the Archbishop has a distinct version of the Metropolitan cross logo with imagery specific to the office. This logo is not made public. The office also uses a specific font. These details help to ensure the authenticity of printed communications from the Archbishop. Official high resolution logo files can be found online at DBQArch.org/Offices/Communications. 1 The Church Visible: The Ceremonial Life and Protocol of the Roman Catholic Church by James-Charles Noonan, Jr. Mission Statement The Archdiocesan Mission Statement: Share Jesus Love Jesus Love, often referred to as agape love, seeks only the benefit of another. It is the total gift of self, modeled by the three persons of the Trinity. Within our mission statement, the name of Jesus is an adjective that describes God s love which we are called to share. In the Gospel, Jesus provides us with the Greatest Commandment, to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength and to love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus also tells us that by loving our neighbor all will know that you are my disciples May we in the Archdiocese of Dubuque Share Jesus Love with all whom we encounter (especially the poor, the marginalized, the down-and-out, and those who hurt others because of their own past hurts) to build the kingdom of God through true Christian discipleship. Using color in a consistent way reinforces our style and fosters recognition. Blue, white and gold are the official colors and the primary palette we use to represent the Archdiocese of Dubuque. These colors play a major role in establishing our identity and should be implemented consistently in standard electronic and print communications such as web applications, PowerPoint presentations, business cards, letterhead and other types of promotional materials. While blue, white and gold are the primary colors and an integral part of our style, a secondary color palette has been developed to provide versatility and variety when developing communications materials for archdiocesan programs. The secondary palette was carefully selected to complement the blue and gold. The secondary palette is used for items such as sidebars, charts, graphs, color borders, etc. Common Questions Q: My department has an upcoming event with a theme. Does this style guide prohibit us from coming up with theme-specific imagery, fonts and colors for our brochures, posters, t-shirts, etc.? A: No. Events are an exception to the rule. Youth Rallies and Retreats for Persons with Disabilities are examples of events which have benefited from artwork, fonts and colors specific to a certain theme. However, a consistant use of the Archdiocesan Logo per the standards of this document is necessary within the context of an event s theme and promotional materials. Q: My department has always used the Coat of Arms on certain materials or occassions. May we continue to use the Coat of Arms in place of the Logo at certain times? A. No. The Archdiocesan Metropolitan Cross Logo - not the Coat of Arms - is to be used at all times to create consistancy and avoid confusion. 6
