SUNDAY, JANUARY 27, 2019 PRELUDE IV. Prelude, Symphony No. 8 in B Major C.-M. Widor (1844-1937) WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. THE GREETING At the sound of the bells, please prepare your heart and mind for worship. INTROIT Almighty and Everlasting God *CALL TO WORSHIP The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer. O. Gibbons (1583-1625) Avalee DeLay Introit: Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Call to Worship is from Psalm 19. *UNISON PRAYER OF INVOCATION Holy God, this is the time, this is the place you have set aside for worship, and so we are here to meet you. Help us to receive the gift of your Word: through our reading, singing, praying, and through the hands of the person next to us that we might become a part of the body of Christ, and find our life in you, through Jesus, our Savior. Amen. *HYMN 321 The Church s One Foundation Aurelia PRAYER OF CONFESSION (A time of silent prayer and meditation.) Eternal God, in whom we live and move and have our being, whose face is hidden from us by our sins, and whose mercy we forget in the blindness of our hearts: cleanse us from all our offenses, and deliver us from proud thoughts and vain desires, that with reverent and humble hearts we may draw near to you, confessing our faults, confiding in your grace, and finding in you our refuge and strength; through Jesus Christ your Son. Amen. *Where you see this notation, please rise in body or in spirit.

KYRIE Lord, Have Mercy H. Willan (1880-1968) ASSURANCE OF PARDON Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. *RESPONSE OF PRAISE Glory Be to God the Father Regent Square Glory be to God the Father, Glory be to God the Son, Glory be to God the Spirit, ever three and ever one; One in might and one in glory While unending ages run. THE CHILDREN S MESSAGE (At this point in the service, we invite preschool-aged children to follow their teachers to the second floor elementary classroom in the Martin House for Worship and Play. ) LITANY OF PARTING Congregation: God be with you there. Children: God be with you here. CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Jesus Loves Me! William B. Bradbury Jesus loves me! This I know, for the Bible tells me so; Little ones to Him belong; they are weak, but He is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

SCRIPTURE LESSON Luke 4:14-21 This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM A Mighty Fortress A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, On earth is not His equal. Alleluia! NRSV G. Young (1919-1998) Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing; Were not the right man on our side, the man of God s own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabbaoth His name; From age to age the same; and He must win the battle. His word above all earthly powers, our thanks to Him abideth; The spirit and the gifts are ours through Him who with us sideth; Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; The body they may kill; God s truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever! Amen! SCRIPTURE LESSON 1 Corinthians 12:12-31a NRSV 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body Jews or Greeks, slaves or free and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14 Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot would say, Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear would say, Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many members, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you, nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. 22 On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; 24 whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member, 25 that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. Luke Scripture Lesson: 14 Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. 15 He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. 16 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. 20 And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 Then he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.

Affirmation of Faith: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. The Lord s Prayer: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. 27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But strive for the greater gifts. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON We Need Each Other *HYMN 693 Though I May Speak *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Lord in your mercy Hear our prayer. THE LORD S PRAYER THE OFFERING OFFERTORY Prayer *DOXOLOGY Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *PRAYER OF DEDICATION *HYMN 300 We Are One in the Spirit *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE God Be with You Till We Meet Again God be with you till we meet again; By His counsels guide, uphold you, With His sheep securely fold you; God be with you till we meet again.
