They had travelled all the way from Nazareth to be counted by the Romans. Mary was soon going to have a baby. But when they reached Bethlehem, there was nowhere to stay. Finally, Joseph knocked on the door of one last inn. The innkeeper showed them to a place where the animals slept. Mary had her baby, wrapped him in strips of cloth and put him in a manger. An angel had told Mary that her baby would be very special God s own son and she should call him Jesus. On the hills near Bethlehem, shepherds were watching over their sheep when they saw an angel. Don t be afraid. Jesus, God s own son, has been born in Bethlehem. You will find the baby Jesus lying in a manger. Then a whole host of angels sang: Glory to God in the highest! The shepherds hurried into the town to look for the baby. They found him lying in a manger, just as the angel had said. God s wonderful world In the beginning, God made the world. Let there be light, said God. And light shone in the darkness. God made the sky, big, fluffy clouds and winds to blow them about. God made the land and the sea. And he made huge trees and tiny flowers, sweet grapes and bitter lemons, spiny cactus and soft green moss. God made the hot, yellow sun for daytime and the pale white moon for night. He made millions of stars. And he was pleased with what he had made. God said, Let fish fill the water! And so the sea was full of fish and great sea creatures. God said, Let birds fill the air! There were hundreds of birds: swans, robins, wrens and eagles. God made all the animals: leaping deer and lumbering elephants, prowling lions and gentle lambs God made them all. Then God made people to be his friends and take care of his world. God was very pleased with everything he had made. And then God rested. 8 9
Abraham s special baby Abraham was a good man. When God spoke to him, he listened. When God told him to leave his father s home and move to a new land, he packed his things and started on the long journey, taking his wife and nephew and all he owned with him. Abraham didn t know where he was going, but he trusted God to guide them to a new home. Look at the stars and try to count them, said God. You will have as many people in your family as the number of stars you can see. Abraham and his wife Sarah had no children and without children, their family could not grow any bigger. But Abraham still trusted God. When Abram was quite an old man, God s promise started to come true. Sarah gave birth to a little boy. They called him Isaac, which means laughter. God had kept his promise. 13
A very big picnic Jesus was once speaking to a large crowd of people. They had been listening to him all day and were getting hungry. Where can we find enough to feed all these people? Jesus asked Philip. It would cost more than two hundred silver coins, said Philip. There are thousands of people here! Andrew came up to Jesus. There s a young boy over here with a packed lunch, he said. He has five barley loaves and two fish. But it won t go very far Jesus told all the people to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and two fishes from the boy and he thanked God for the food. Jesus then did something wonderful! He shared out the food amongst everyone! No one went away hungry. Jesus gave them all enough to eat, and there were even twelve baskets full of left-overs. Jesus had fed more than five thousand people with just five loaves and two fishes. What a fantastic picnic! 44 45
The promise of new life Jesus went to see his friends who were hiding behind locked doors. One moment he was talking with them, then he was gone. Then one early morning, they saw Jesus beside Lake Galilee. He told them to throw their net on the other side of the boat and when they did, they pulled in a huge catch of fish. Jesus prepared breakfast for them. Go and wait in Jerusalem, he told them. I must return to God, my Father, soon. But I will send the Holy Spirit to be with you always. It will be as if I were with you all the time, everywhere. I will never leave you. Go and tell everyone that I died for them and that I am alive. Tell them that God loves them and there is the promise of new life for everyone who trusts me. The Holy Spirit came to them and gave them power to be brave people who shared what they knew so that people today can know Jesus too. 60 61

Most merciful redeemer, Friend and brother, May we know you more clearly, Love you more dearly, PIC? And follow you more nearly, Day by day. Adapted from Richard of Chichester (1253) PIC? Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. The Lord s Prayer 8 9
Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise him, all creatures here below. Praise him above, you heavenly host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Thomas Ken, 1637-1711 Come and sing for joy to God; Let us come before him and say thank you! For God is great! He holds in his hands the foundations of the earth, the mountain tops and the depths of the sea. Come, bow down and worship him. Kneel before the Lord, the Creator. For he is our God, and we are his people. He loves us and takes care of us. From Psalm 95 16 17
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon, Where there is doubt, faith, Where there is despair, hope, Where there is darkness, light, Where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, not so much to be understood as to understand, not so much to be loved, as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in dying, that we awake to eternal life. St Francis of Assisi, 1181-1226 30 31

May the Lord make his face shine upon us and be gracious to us, may the Lord look kindly on us and give us peace; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be with us and remain with us now and every day. Based on Numbers 6:24-26 May the peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep our hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be with us and remain with us always.
