THE PLEASANT VISITOR NOVEMBER 13, 2018 Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, 5120 Burlington Road, Greensboro, NC 27405 Office: (336) 697-0444 Fax: (336) 697-0445 www.mountpleasantumc.org OUR SICK AND PRAYER LIST Joe Brady is recovering after out-patient surgery he had on Friday, November 9th Derrick Holbrook is also recovering after outpatient surgery he had on Friday, November 9th Don Francis has been a patient at Cone Hospital this past week Larry Dick was also a patient at Cone Hospital this past week after suffering a stroke Bob Boles has been transferred to Penny Byrn at Maryfield for rehab Lloyd Apple is at Ashton Place for rehab after a hospital stay Paulene Burchelle is recovering after surgery to have stints put in Jonah Brown, Pastor Andrew & Jami s son, is recovering well after two surgeries Marvin Burke has been diagnosed with a re-occurrence of cancer * We join in expressing our sympathy to the family of Estelle Freeman who died on Thursday, November 8th. A Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday, November 14th at Hollywood Cemetery in Elkin, NC. * We express our sympathy to Barbara Cranford in the death of her sister-in-law, Eleanor Wyrick on November 3rd. Her Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, November 7th at Sharpe Road Baptist Church. * We join in expressing our sympathy to Harry Pike in the death of his brother, Ralph Pike on Friday, November 2nd. His Funeral Service was held on Monday, November 5th at First United Methodist Church in Graham, NC. * We also join in expressing our deepest sympathy to the family of Peggy Marshall who died on Friday, October 26th. Her Funeral Service was held on Monday, October 29th at Mount Pleasant. * We express our sympathy to Sara Johnson in the death of her sister, Edith Coppley on Monday, October 29th. Her Funeral Service was held on Friday, November 2nd in Shallotte, NC. * We also express our sympathy to the family of Leroy Cauthren who died on Monday, October 22nd. A Graveside Service was held at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery on Wednesday, October 24th. SPECIAL THANKSGIVING SERVICE & COVERED DISH LUNCH The people of Mount Pleasant Church will once again gather for our Special Thanksgiving Church United Worship Service this coming SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18th at 11:00 a.m. Please note that there will only be one Worship Service held on that Sunday. Discipleship & Sunday School will be held at 10:00 a.m. Immediately following the Worship Service, there will be a Covered Dish Lunch in the Fellowship Hall. Please bring a side and/or dessert to share. The Church will provide the turkey & beverages. Let us give thanks, for God is good! HOLIDAY CLOSINGS Please note that the Church Office will be closed on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 22nd & FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 23rd for Thanksgiving. The Office will reopen on Monday, November 26th at 8:30 a.m. Happy Thanksgiving!! CARDS OR NOTES WANTED! LETTERS FROM HOME A SPECIAL PATRIOTIC PROGRAM Tickets are now on sale in the Church Office for a special patriotic program which will be held on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30th at 7:00 p.m. here at Mount Pleasant Church s Fellowship Hall. The cost of a ticket is $15.00 per person. In cooperation with First In Flight Entertainment, Mount Pleasant will present Letters From Home, America s Bombshell Duo. You will be dazzled with tap dancing. Your memories will be filled with song. You will be charmed by charisma and personality. Your hearts will be touched forever with patriotism. Everyone is invited to this special program which will honor our veterans, active military & their families by reviving patriotism through music from the Vietnam Era. The evening will include performances by the Handbell Choir, a Flute Soloist, the Band & Choir. NEW BIBLE STUDY ON SUNDAY MORNING!!! The book of Hebrews is a must read for all followers of Jesus. In this 13 chapter message from the past, we see the great significance of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus with particular emphasis on how that connects to the Old Testament. Pastor Andrew will lead this study at 10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall beginning SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11th. No experience necessary. No cost. Bring your Bible or use one provided. ATTENTION: BLOOD DONORS The 2nd Annual Judy Register Blood Drive is TUESDAY, JANUARY 8th. Don t forget to mark your calendar now for this upcoming date. Please also remember that you Can Not give blood after Monday, November 12th and still be able to give blood on January 8th. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes are due by 12:00 Noon on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15th. On Thursday, November 15th at 6:00 p.m., everyone is invited to come to Susan Tanzer s home (825 Stockport Way, McLeansville) to pray over the shoeboxes before they are taken to a drop-off Church. BACK PACK MINISTRY The Backpack Ministry has been asked to supply Thanksgiving boxes for 14 families. We are asking for your help. We need 5 Pound Bags Of Sweet Or White Potatoes, Packs Of Dinner Rolls and Store-Bought Desserts (Pies Preferred). If you can help, please bring items to Church by SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18th. 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. 2 Corinthians 4:15 (NIV)

The cards and phone calls and prayers meant a lot to me during this time. Sara Johnson Dear Church Family, I want to thank our Church Family for your care, concern, cards, calls and visits since the unexpected death of my brother, Ralph. Mount Pleasant was well represented at Ralph s Funeral. Thank you, Ed Allred for visiting with me and my Family prior to the Funeral and also attending the Service. We are Blessed to be a part of such a caring Church! Harry & Carol Pike Dear Friends At Mount Pleasant, We, the family of June Collins, want to express our sincere appreciation for the love and kindness the members of Mount Pleasant showed Mom during her illness, Mom loved Mount Pleasant and missed being able to attend on a regular basis. Your cards, phone calls, visits and prayers meant a great deal to her. We also want to express our appreciation for the many kindnesses shown our family following Mom s death. Mount Pleasant is filled with wonderful people and will always hold a special place in our hearts. Cora quickly replied affirmatively, saying, Yes I know. It s someone who takes care of animals! MARK YOUR CALENDAR Don t forget to mark you calendar now for our Christmas Eve Candle Lighting & Communion Service on MONDAY, DECEMBER 24th at 7:00 p.m. Children s Moment Out of Mouth of Babes On the Sunday when Andrew preached that faith is the evidence of things we cannot see, Martha played a game of I Spy with the children and asked if they could see love. When 4-yearold Mason got back to his seat, he touched his grandmother s hand with his little finger, looked at her, and said, Mavi, YOU are love. He s is already learning to see what s most important in life! WE SHELTER UPDATE WE Shelter Volunteer Teams of 3 are needed for THURSDAY from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. Get together with a girlfriend and come volunteer at the shelter. Sign-Up Sheets are located in the downstairs hallway on the bulletin board outside the Church Office. Donna Combs would like someone to help her provide the meal on January 3rd. If doing it with a friend sounds better to you, please reach out to Donna or Tami Batts (336-707-5009, tamibatts@fellowshipfarm.net) to fill that spot or simply add your name to the Sign-Up Sheets in the downstairs hallway with your phone number. Also, don t forget that the WE Shelter will be holding an Open House on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 9th from 2:00 pm 4:00 pm. Pastor Andrew, along with other area pastors will be saying blessings over the shelter and the volunteers. All are invited. The WE Shelter s official start date is Monday, December 10th. (2505 Fairview St., Greensboro, NC) PLASTIC BAGS NEEDED!! The Bedroll Group could use LOTS more plastic bags. If you would like to donate your plastic bags to this worthy cause, please just drop them off in the Church Office. The Bedroll Group thanks you for your support! P a g e 4 FINANCIAL UPDATE FOR OCTOBER 2018 During the month of October, the total amount given to the General Budget was $34,260.04. Actual Expenses for the month of October totaled $38,479.14. As of the end of October, the total amount Budgeted (year to date) for 2018 is $442,771.00 and the total amount received for the General Budget (year to date) is $410,749.23. As of the end of October, actual General Budget Receipts are behind the 2018 Budgeted Amount by $32,021.77. Also, Total Actual General Budget Expenses ($415,493.52) have exceeded Total Actual General Budget Receipts ($410,749.23) by $4,744.29. MISSIONS UPDATE! Thank you for your donations to our October Mission Box which will go to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is a non-profit organization dedicated to alleviating human suffering around the globe. UMCOR s work includes programs and projects in disaster response, health, sustainable agriculture, food security, relief supplies, and more. UMCOR is a ministry of The United Methodist Church through the General Board of Global Ministries, and their goal is to assist the most vulnerable persons affected by crisis or chronic need without regard to their race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. They believe all people have God-given worth and dignity. UMCOR s work reaches people in more than 80 countries, including the United States. They provide humanitarian relief when war, conflict, or natural disaster disrupt life to such an extent that communities are unable to recover on their own. A total of $620.00 was received for UMCOR during the month of October!
