STEWARDSHIP MOMENT 3 rd Sunday after Epiphany, Luke 4:14-21 The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. Among Luke s principles is God s care for the outcasts. Luke makes it clear that God has a special concern for the lowly and downtrodden and uses believers to bless and lift them up. It is clear that we have a responsibility to the poor, it is because of God s greatest gift of salvation to those who do not deserve it and can never earn it that we should help those who are undervalued in the world, who can never repay us for what we may do for them. Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. OLD TESTAMENT READING Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10 Page 482 in the pew Bible The exiles have returned and rebuilt Jerusalem. Now Ezra, the priest, reads the law of Moses to them in the public square. When they hear it, they weep for their sins and for the long years in exile, but Ezra reminds them that the joy of the Lord is their strength. The Word of the Lord. NEW TESTAMENT READING 1 Corinthians 12:12-31 Page 182 in the pew Bible The apostle and pastor Paul uses the metaphor of the human body to describe how intimately connected we are in the church. For this struggling congregation in Corinth, Paul delivers a vital message of unity that is a mark of the church today. The Word of the Lord. GOSPEL ALLELUIA (please stand) Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia. (John 6:68) GOSPEL READING Luke 4:14-21 Page 62 in the pew Bible Near the beginning of Jesus public ministry, he visits his hometown of Nazareth.
