The call of God comes to people like us who have weaknesses and fears, and yet God expects great things from us. The beautiful things God says about His Church and His people often seem far removed from the actual conditions we see. We would like to see signs and wonders that validate our faith and our calling, but God promises that His Word and Spirit are enough for us to rely upon. Pray for His Holy Spirit to fill us with the faith, the hope, and the love that will be our true worship. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS SHARING OF THE PEACE INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen P: Let us repent of our sins that the Good News may have life always in our hearts. (Moment of silence for considering our need of forgiveness.) CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: O God of mercy and of justice, C: We open up our hearts to You this day, hearts that are heavy with the sins with which we have failed You in every part of our lives. We have wronged You and our brothers and sisters in this world by what we have done, and we have left the good You require undone. Help us to turn from our wrongs, and forgive us for the sake of Your only Son, Jesus. P: Jesus came proclaiming the Good News of God. To all who accepted His leadership He gave the promise of God s great, good Kingdom. He offers each one of you His full and free forgiveness because of his suffering and death on your behalf. In His stead and by His command I forgive you all of your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen P: The peace of the Lord be with you all. C: And also with you. PRAISE SONG SET AGPS #71 - Behold What Manner of Love Behold what manner of love the Father has given unto us! Behold what manner of love the Father has given unto us! That we should be called the children of God, That we should be called the children of God. (Repeat) 4

FIRST LESSON - Jeremiah 1:4-10 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Then I said, Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth. But the Lord said to me, Do not say, I am only a youth ; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord. Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me, Behold, I have put my words in your mouth. See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant. SECOND LESSON - 1 Corinthians 12:31b-13:13 31 And I will show you a still more excellent way. If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 6

VERSE - AGPS #129 I Love You Lord I love You, Lord, and I lift my voice To worship You, O my soul rejoice. Take joy, my King, in what You hear, May it be a sweet, sweet sound in Your ear. HOLY GOSPEL - Luke 4:31-44 31 And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, 32 and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority. 33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are the Holy One of God. 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent and come out of him! And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36 And they were all amazed and said to one another, What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out! 37 And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region 38 And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them. 40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 And demons also came out of many, crying, You are the Son of God! But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. 42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, 43 but he said to them, I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose. 44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea. SERMON HYMN AGPS #168 Lord of All Nations SERMON 7

NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. OFFERING OFFERING SONG - AGPS #207 - Seek Ye First Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, And His righteousness. And all these things shall be added unto you! Allelu, alleluia! Ask and it shall be giv n unto you, Seek and ye shall find, Knock and the door shall be opened unto you, Allelu, alleluia! Man does not live by bread alone, But by ev ry word That proceeds from the mouth of the Lord, Allelu, alleluia! 8

PRAYERS LORD S PRAYER WORDS OF INSTITUTION Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. DISTRIBUTION SONGS LSB #423 Jesus Refuge of the Weary Jesus refuge of the weary, Blest Redeemer, whom we love, Fountain in life s desert dreary, Savior from the world above: Often have Your eyes, offended, Gazed upon the sinner s fall; Yet upon the cross extended, You have borne the pain of all. Do we pass that cross unheeding, Breathing no repentant vow, Though we see You wounded, bleeding, See Your thorn-encircled brow? Yet Your sinless death has brought us Life eternal, peace, and rest; Only what Your grace has taught us Calms the sinner s deep distress. Jesus, may our hearts be burning With more fervent love for You; May our eyes be ever turning To behold Your cross anew Till in glory, parted never From the blessed Savior s side, Graven in our hearts forever, Dwell the cross, the Crucified. 9

White as Snow LSB #563 Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness Jesus, Thy blood and righteousness My beauty are, my glorious dress; Midst flaming worlds, in these arrayed, With joy shall I lift up my head. 10

Bold shall I stand in that great day, Cleansed and redeemed, no debt to pay; Fully absolved through these I am From sin and fear, from guilt and shame. Lord, I believe Thy precious blood, Which at the mercy seat of God Pleads for the captives liberty, Was also shed in love for me. Lord, I believe, were sinners more Than sands upon the ocean shore, Thou hast for all a ransom paid, For all a full atonement made. When from the dust of death I rise To claim my mansion in the skies, This then shall be my only plea: Jesus hath lived and died for me. Jesus, be endless praise to Thee, Whose boundless mercy hath for me, For me, and all Thy hands have made, An everlasting ransom paid. BENEDICTION CLOSING SONG - LSB #806 Give Thanks Give thanks with a grateful heart, give thanks to the Holy One, Give thanks because He s given Jesus Christ, His Son. Give thanks with a grateful heart, give thanks to the Holy One, Give thanks because He s given Jesus Christ, His Son. And now let the weak say, I am strong, Let the poor say I am rich because of what the Lord has done for us. And now let the weak say, I am strong, Let the poor say I am rich because of what the Lord has done for us. (Repeat) POSTLUDE 11

HOLY COMMUNION We ask our visitors to note that our Lutheran understanding of Holy Communion is different than that of most other churches. We have always believed that Christ's body and blood are present, in a very real way, in, with, and under the bread and wine ("This is my body... This is my blood." Matt. 26:26,28). We also believe that this eating and drinking of Christ s body and blood forgives our sins and strengthens our faith. By communing together we become united, not only in saving faith, but also in belief regarding the scriptural teachings of the Lord's Supper. Expressions of unity we feel should be honest. We love and respect other Christians who believe differently, and welcome all to worship with us. Because of our understanding of communion fellowship, we invite only members of First English Lutheran Church and those who are members of the Lutheran Church Missouri synod (LCMS) to commune here. If you are a member of the LCMS, please follow the four steps of preparation for Holy Communion, which are printed out on the white cards found in the rack on the pew in front of you. When you attend Holy Communion, please register by filling out one of the white cards and pass them to the inner aisle during the offering so that the ushers can collect it. For those who prefer, the cup in the center of the communion tray is grape juice with a drop of wine. If you do not feel secure taking the individual cup from the tray, please hold out your hand to indicate your concern and the cup will be handed to you. Small children are invited to accompany their parents if they desire to receive a blessing from the Pastor. VISITORS AND MEMBERS Sometime during the service we ask that everyone fill out one of the cards found in the pew racks so that we might have a record of your worship with us today. For our visitors we ask that you please sign our Guest Register on the table next to the front door as you leave. We are pleased to have you join us this morning as we praise our great God, and encourage you to visit us again when possible. As the Deer CCLI #1431 1984 Maranatha Praise, Inc.
