FROM THE DEACON S DESK Q. How long does the Epiphany season last? A. That actually depends on the date Easter is celebrated for a given year. Unlike Christmas (Dec 25) and Epiphany (Jan 6), Easter does not occur on the same date each year. The March equinox coincides with Easter Sunday and holidays that are related to it. Easter does not fall on a fixed date in the Gregorian calendar, or the Julian calendar, which is still used by many eastern orthodox churches. The Catholic Churche(s) use the Gregorian calendar to determine Easter while the Eastern Orthodox Churches utilize the Julian calendar; thus the difference in determining Easter between Catholic and Orthodox liturgical calendars. In 325 AD the Council of Nicaea established that Easter would be held on the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the vernal equinox. From that point forward, the Easter date depended on the ecclesiastical approximation of March 21 for the vernal equinox. Easter is delayed by 1 week if the full moon is on Sunday, which decreases the chances of it falling on the same day as the Jewish Passover. According to the Gregorian calendar, Easter falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25 from 1753 to 2400. So let's return to the original question of how long is the season of the Epiphany. Based on the above, Easter falls on April 21. Working in reverse order, let us use this year (2019) as an example. April 21 Easter Sunday April 14 Hosanna Sunday (Palm Sunday) April 7 Healing of the Blind Man (6th week of Lent) March 31 Healing of the Paralytic (5th week of lent) March 24 Parable of the Prodigal Son (4th week of Lent) March 17 Healing of the Hemorrhaging Woman (3rd week of Lent) March 10 Healing of the Leper (2nd week of Lent) March 6 - Ash Wednesday March 4 - Ash Monday March 3 - Sunday of the Entrance into Lent (Beginning of the Season of Great Lent) February 24 Sunday of the Faithful Departed (All Souls) February 17 Sunday of the Righteous and Just (All Saints) February 10 Sunday of the Priests February 3-4th Sunday of Epiphany The number of Sundays after the Epiphany will change each year the later the calendar date for Easter the more Sundays in the Season of Epiphany. 3 RD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY Galatians 3:23-29 What Faith Has Brought Us Brothers and Sisters: Before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham s offspring, heirs according to the promise. Praise be to God always! John 3:1-16 Nicodemus The Apostle writes: Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God. Jesus answered him, Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above. Nicodemus said to him, How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother s womb and be born? Jesus answered, Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, You must be born from above. The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus said to him, How can these things be? Jesus answered him, Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. This is the truth.
