THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD CHRISTMAS EVE Shining in the Darkness December 24, 2018 4:00 & 6:00pm AS WE GATHER Light has become synonymous with Christmas. Lights on houses. Lights on Christmas trees. Lights in luminaries that brighten walkways. Yet, all these lights are little more than sentimental decoration if we do not recognize the greater light that shined at Christmas. Isaiah reminds us, The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light (Isaiah 9:2). God shines light in darkness. Tonight, we rejoice in Jesus, the light of the world, who gives deeper meaning to all other Christmas lights. O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by; Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting light. The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight. (LSB 361:1) PROCESSIONAL #379 PREPARATION O Come, All Ye Faithful O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant! O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold Him Born the king of angels: Refrain: O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord! Highest, most holy, Light of Light eternal, Born of a virgin, a mortal He comes; Son of the Father Now in flesh appearing! Refrain Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God In the highest: Refrain Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, Born this happy morning; Jesus, To Thee be glory giv n! Word of the Father Now in flesh appearing! Refrain OPENING SENTENCES The people who walked in darkness People: have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, People: on them has light shined. O little town of Bethlehem, People: How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep People: The silent stars go by; Yet in thy dark streets shineth People: The everlasting light. The hopes and fears of all the years People: Are met in thee tonight. INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit. CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age. As we gather together this Christmas Eve, let us confess our sins to God our Father. People: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the glory of your holy name. Amen. 1 2

Today we celebrate the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession who are zealous for good works. Because of this Savior born for us, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. HYMN OF PRAISE #368 Angels We Have Heard on High Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o er the plains, And the mountains in reply, Echoing their joyous strains. Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be Which inspire your heav nly song? Come to Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the newborn King. SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Let us pray. O God, you make this most holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light. People: Grant that as we have known the mysteries of that Light on earth we may also come to the fullness of His joys in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 3 HYMN #388 Go Tell It On The Mountain Refrain: Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and ev rywhere; Go tell it on the mountain That Jesus Christ is born! While shepherds kept their watching O er silent flocks by night, Behold, throughout the heavens There shone a holy light. Refrain The shepherds feared and trembled When lo, above the earth Rang out the angel chorus That hailed our Savior s birth. Refrain Down in a lonely manger The humble Christ was born; And God sent us salvation That blessed Christmas morn. Refrain WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 9:2 7 ( The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. ) The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. For the yoke of his burden and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE Titus 2:11 14 (We await our blessed hope, the glory of our great God.) For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. 4

4:00 CHOIR ANTHEM The Shepherd s Lamb Dan Forrest The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the second chapter. People: Glory to you, O Lord. In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, People: Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, People: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased! This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON HYMN #370 What Child Is This What child is this, who, laid to rest, On Mary s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the king, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste to bring Him laud, The babe, the son of Mary! 5 continued Why lies He in such mean estate Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear; for sinners here The silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear shall pierce Him through, The cross be borne for me, for you; Hail, hail the Word made flesh, The babe, the son of Mary! So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh; Come, peasant, king, to own Him. The King of kings salvation brings; Let loving hearts enthrone Him. Raise, raise the song on high, The virgin sings her lullaby; Joy, joy, for Christ is born, The babe, the son of Mary! SERMON No Place For Them In The Inn NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen 4:00 CHOIR ANTHEM Messiah s Lullaby David Schwoebel OFFERING As your offering is collected, please sign our attendance book located at the end of the pew. If you are a visitor, please leave your address and phone. After you are finished, please pass the book along to others in your pew, and return the book to the center aisle. You may check the register to see the names of those to greet after the service. 6

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Let us come before God s throne of grace in the name of the Savior of the World to pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Almighty God, by the incarnation of your eternal Son, you revealed that you are love. Give us a deep and abiding faith in Christ and His promise, that by His conception, virgin birth, holy life, sacrificial death and victorious resurrection our sins are forgiven and we are yours. People: Increase also our love for one another for as you abide in us, we abide in you and your love is perfected in us. Fill us with joy, and lead us to proclaim this good news to all people. Lord God, by His birth your dear Son took His place in the family of Mary and Joseph. Bless the families of our church and our country, that men and women would live faithfully as husbands and wives, loving and caring for their children. People: Bless all families to grow together in faith, share the truth of your Word, and love one another deeply from the heart. Heavenly Father, by your gracious provision you created your Church to be your eternal family, where all of us may find a home filled with sisters and brothers to care for us, love us and increase our joy. People: Bless your holy church to be a refuge for the weary, a family for the lonely, a safe place for those who are afraid and a help to one another in all our burdens. Almighty God, guide and defend the president, Congress and all who administer and judge our laws. Change the hearts of those who would lead us away from you and your truth. People: Preserve in this land the freedom to serve you, and lead us to be faithful citizens. Father, in love you declared us to be yours and promised to hear our prayers. Protect the police, fire personnel and other emergency workers whose duty and service to us have called them away from their loved ones this night. People: Keep safe all who are traveling during this holiday time. Relieve the sufferings of your people, and heal their diseases according to your mercy. 7 Into your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. THE LORD S PRAYER CANDLELIGHT CEREMONY As the Pastors light their candles from the Christ candle in the middle of the Advent wreath, the usher's come forward. The ushers light their candles from Pastors candles. They will bring the Light to worshipers at the end of each pew. (For the sake of safety, please hold lighted candles upright, dipping unlit candles into the flame of a lighted candle. We also ask that young children not hold their own candle, but instead hold a candle with one of their parents or use a battery operated candle.) As the light of these candles illumine our faces, it symbolizes the light of Christ, a child in the manger at Bethlehem, a Savior suffering our death on the cross, and soon to come from His throne on high as Judge of all. He is our Light here on earth and the eternal Light who enlightens heaven, where there is no need of candle or sun. Rejoice, for the Light of the world has come, who transforms us with the brightness of His glory. CANDLELIGHT HYMNS #380 Hark! The Herald Angels Sing Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King; Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled! Joyful, all ye nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies; With the angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem! Refrain: Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King! Christ, by highest heav n adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, Late in time behold Him come, Offspring of a virgin s womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, Hail the incarnate Deity! Pleased as Man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Immanuel! Refrain 8 continued

Hail, the heav n-born Prince of Peace! Hail, the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, Ris n with healing in His wings. Mild He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth. Refrain #364 Away in a Manger Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head. The stars in the sky looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care, And take us to heaven to live with Thee there. HYMN #363 Silent Night Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy Infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight; Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing, Alleluia! Christ, the Savior, is born! Christ, the Savior is born! Silent night, holy night! Son of God, love s pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth. CLOSING PRAYER Please extinguish candles. 9 CLOSING SENTENCES & BENEDICTION Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy People: that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David People: a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. CLOSING HYMN #387 Joy to the World Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let ev ry heart prepare Him room And heav n and nature sing, And heav n and nature sing, And heav n, and heav n and nature sing. Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns! Let men their songs employ, While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat the sounding joy. No more let sins and sorrows grow Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow Far as the curse is found, Far as the curse is found, Far as, far as the curse is found. He rules the world with truth and grace And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders of His love.
