ALL: We affirm that we are people of the Way, we give thanks that today our paths cross. ONE: Let us greet each other as we journey together towards fullness of life. Let us greet the one on our left and the one on our right with peace and love. *Greeting of One Another The Gathering Bell Advent Candle Lighting *Responsive Reading: ONE: We look for an extraordinary sign of hope for our world but God s sign is most ordinary of all: ALL: A young woman is with child. *Those who are comfortably able may stand.
ONE: We look to power for strength in our world but God points to the most vulnerable: ALL: She gives birth. ONE: We look far and wide for a key to God s mystery, but God points us home: ALL: She calls this child Immanuel: God-with-us! ONE: Let us rejoice, and worship our God ALL: In our ordinary, vulnerable lives: God-with-us! First Reading: Psalm 80:1-7 1 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock! You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth 2 before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh. Stir up your might, and come to save us! 3 Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved. 4 O LORD God of hosts, how long will you be angry with your people s prayers? 5 You have fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink in full measure. 6 You make us the scorn of our neighbors; our enemies laugh among themselves. 7 Restore us, O God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved. Anthem: Advent David N. Davenport Children s Moment Prayers of the People Silent Prayer Pastoral Prayer
The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Choral Prayer Response Invitation to Giving Offertory: Noel sur les Flutes Daquin *Doxology: (tune) No. 47 Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise God all creatures here below, Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost. Amen *Dedication of Gifts *Hymn: My Soul Gives Glory to My God No. 130 Second Reading: Luke 1:39-55 39 In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, 40 where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 42 and exclaimed with a loud cry, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 43 And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? 44 For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord. 46 And Mary said, My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. 52 He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever. The Youth Donation Drive for AKEELA is over. Thank you for a very successful donation drive. Your generosity will go a long way toward helping people in need this winter. Confirmation The 2019 confirmation cohort is forming right now. It has been a few years since the last confirmation session, and in order to make sure all youth have the chance to complete it, we are including any high school aged youth and beyond. Anyone who has not yet gone through confirmation is encouraged to do so. The purpose of confirmation is to help us think about what our faith and tradition can mean moving into the rest of our lives. It is not designed to be a list of things people have to believe or memorize. Instead, it will be an exploration of what enlivens each of us and an opportunity to continue to form lives of deep faith on our own terms, just as we are, and where we are at right now. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
