23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three LOOKING AT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH Has someone ever asked you questions about the Catholic Church? Did someone ever say they were interested in the way we worship or what we believe as Catholics? Maybe you are being called to work in God's name and invite them to take a look at the RCIA process. We have a treasure in our church that needs to be shared. Consider asking someone if they'd like to begin a period of inquiry at St John Neumann. Formal classes will start in the Fall but right now we invite any adult with the desire to be baptized or to complete their Catholic initiation through Confirmation and/or Eucharist to call Fr. Al or Barb Stokes and begin this time of inquiry. Let's take it seriously and call others to "come and see" as Jesus did. Join us on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 8 PM for an hour to share questions and interests of faith. APPALACHIA GARAGE SALE The Appalachia workcampers will be holding their annual Fall Garage Sale on Sat, Sept. 10. Donations gratefully accepted on Sept. 8 & 9. Help is always appreciated. Contact Laura Juran at lejuran@verizon.net or 412-367-4264 with questions. MARRIAGE PREP You work hard to make your wedding day the most awesome of all. Before you put all your energy into a day, please take some time to reflect on the sacrament and the lifetime covenant you are making. Register now for our Saturday, Sept 17th Marriage Prep Day at SJN. Our team couples and pastor share wisdom and experience to prepare you as you begin to live this vocation of married love. It is a day just for the two of you and it s an approved marriage prep program of the diocese. If you are planning a wedding day in the next twelve months, call the Rel. Ed office to save your space. SUNDAY EVENING MASSES RESUME SEPT. 11 AT 5:30 PM. DIVORCED & SEPARATED SUPPORT GROUP MEETING STARTING SEPT. 12 The Divorced & Separated support group jointly sponsored by Sts. John & Paul, St. Richard and St. John Neumann parishes will begin its next 13 week cycle of meetings on Monday, Sept. 12. This group provides caring support to anyone who is experiencing the pain of separation or divorce. Meetings are on Monday evenings from 7-8:45 PM and will be held at St. Richard Church in Rooms 5 A & 5B of the Social Hall. Anyone who has questions or would like more information should contact Ralph Joy (412-741-5456 or rjoy205@verizon.net). SJN CHOIR If you enjoy singing and are looking for fellowship, please consider joining our adult choir this season. Rehearsals resume Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 7:15 PM. No choral experience necessary - please come and give it a try! If you are interested, please see Patty after Mass for more information. RESPECT LIFE The meeting for the Respect Life Committee will be held on Monday, September 12 at 7 PM instead of September 5 due to the Labor Day Holiday. Everyone is invited to attend - we will be discussing as a Community of God our participation in the 40 Days for Life; a time of prayer, fasting, vigil and community outreach. SCRIPTURE STUDY As so many students return to school, make your plans to return to a study of the Scriptures. Each Thursday morning, a group of adults meet in Conf. Room A to read and reflect on the coming Sunday scriptures. We add a little of the historical background, some biblical research and our own life experiences. In the sharing we all grow deeper in God's Word. Come and join from 9:45 to 11:15 AM. Coffee is hot and the door is open! REMINDER: THE SACRAMENT OF CON- FESSION WILL BE CELEBRATED EVERY SATURDAY, FROM 9:30-10 AM. DIOCESAN COLLECTION Next week-end, Sept. 10 & 11, a collection will be taken for the annual Bishop s Education Fd. The collection box will be in the back of the church, after all Masses. SOLOS will be meeting Tuesday, September 20, at Max s Allegheny Tavern, on the North Side, at 6 PM. If you plan to attend, please call Bob Lupi at 412-364- 4921. THANK YOU Thank you to all of the Parish Life committee, especially Kathy Miller and Connie O Lare and all volunteers who helped make the Parish Picnic a success. All the salads, desserts and side dishes that were brought were especially appreciated! A special thank you to Joe Dentici of Kuhn s Market for the food and the Filiaggi Family of Sir Pizza for the beer.
Page Four September 4, 2011 CATECHETICAL SUNDAY DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME Catechetical Sunday will be celebrated throughout the U.S. on Sunday, September 18. It is a time to recognize the ministry we all have, by virtue of our Baptism, to bring others to know Christ. We do this by our words and the way we lead our lives. On this Sunday we ponder the words of Christ Do this in memory of me as we call forth and commission those who proclaim Jesus Christ to children and teens through our parish catechetical programs. Please plan to stop in and greet these faithful volunteers at a social following Mass. ALTAR SERVER TRAINING A training session for altar servers has been scheduled for Saturday, September 10 at 10:00 AM in the church. All boys or girls in the 5 th grade or older who are interested may contact Andrew James at ajames@stjohnneumannpgh.org or 412-366-5885 x11. BAPTISM PREP Our Baptism Prep session is a time to reflect and pray about the awesome power of Baptism and the responsibility of parents. If you anticipate celebrating this sacrament in your family soon, please call the Rel Ed office to register for this important time. Our next session will be Sunday, Sept. 18 from 10:30 till noon. USHERS FOR CONFIRMATION We're looking for about 8 ushers and greeters to help us welcome and maintain order at our Confirmation celebration on Friday, Sept 16 at 7PM. No prior experience required just a smile and a helpful spirit. If this is you and your calendar is free, call Barb Stokes or Joan Kiliany to help the parish. CONFIRMATION If you are preparing for Confirmation and would like to be a reader at the celebration of the sacrament on Friday, September 16 at 7PM and would be willing to come to a lector practice before that date, please call Barb Stokes to submit your name. Reconciliation provides us with the healing we need to begin true life in the spirit. Beginning Sept 3 the sacrament is offered from 9:30-10 AM. Take advantage of the grace and peace given through this sacrament as you prepare for Confirmation. As you prepare for Confirmation, you are welcome to attend Mass and receive the Eucharist on Wednesday evening, Sept. 14, at 7 PM. All Confirmation paperwork and journals should be in the Rel. Ed. office. FINAL PRACTICE/REFLECTION WILL BE ON SUNDAY, SEPT 11 AFTER 5:30 PM MASS. ALL CANDIDATES AND A PARENT OR SPONSOR SHOULD MEET IN BOVARD HALL. GOOD SHEPHERD START DELAYED Due to circumstances beyond our control, all sessions of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd will now begin the week of Tuesday, September 27. Please register if you have not already. DO YOU HAVE A CHILD BETWEEN 3-6 YEARS OLD? Families with children in Preschool or Kindergarten are invited in a particular way to take advantage of our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. This Montessori-based program is designed to meet the specific spiritual needs of 3-6 year old children, bringing them joy and a sense of deep peace. Good Shepherd is offered at many times through the week and many sessions still have space. Registration forms can be printed from the parish website and returned to the Religious Education office. FIRST COMMUNION/FIRST RECONCILIATION Way back in June, packets were distributed to all those preparing for these important sacraments in the spring of 2012. Please complete that work and return the packet to the Rel. Ed. office BEFORE school starts. Time goes quickly. Find it, finish it and get it in today. Concentrate on school meetings and Rel Ed in September and then we'll hold our parent meeting for these sacraments on Monday, October 17 at 7PM in the church.
