Betenu News U R J Volume 27, Number 2 November 2009 Cheshvan / Kislev 5770 RABBI S MESSAGE: THE 5-RABBIS The month of November has been designated "Jewish Book Month" dating back 50 or so years. It is held annually in November, to come shortly before the Chanukah gift-giving season. Among other things, it feature lectures by visiting authors. We at Betenu will be celebrating "Jewish Book Month" with the "Five Rabbis Program" scheduled for November 14 at 7PM at Betenu. Last year, Congregation Betenu ran the "Four Rabbis Program" featuring the recent publications of NH's rabbis. This year, the program has been expanded beyond NH to include noted children's author, Rabbi Susan Abramson of Burlington, MA. Returning this year are Rabbis Joel Klein, Louis Rieser, Larry Karol and Joshua Segal. The five Rabbis will participate together on Saturday night, November 15 at 7PM, Congregation Betenu, Amherst, NH. In addition to Havdallah and snacks, there will be five presentations, about 15 minutes, each. We'll begin with Rabbi Joel Klein (retired, Manchester) who will be speaking on "Through the Name of God, A New Road to the Origin of Judaism and Christianity"; Rabbi Abramson will present her children's book series, featuring her newest publication, "Rabbi Rocketpower and the Half-Baked Matzah Mystery - A Particularly Peculiar Passover"; Rabbi Louis Rieser (Etz Hayim, Derry) will be discussing his book, "The Hillel Narratives"; Rabbi Larry Karol (Temple Israel, Dover) will tell about, and sing a song or two, from his books titled, "One Light Above: The Larry Karol Songbook, "Two are Better Than One" and "A New Beginning"; And yours truly will be describing my most recent book, "For an Eternal Memory: Ordinary and Unusual Jewish Cemetery Monuments and How to Create Them." The program is free. For your planning purposes, the program should actually finish between 8:45 and 9:00 PM. Autographed copies of the various publications and CDs of the rabbis will also be available for your viewing and purchase. It should be a great opportunity to meet some of the region's rabbis and to get an idea of the breadth and depth of the interests and the scholarship that these rabbis have developed. In addition, some of you may see it as an opportunity for some early Chanuka shopping! --- Also in November, best wishes for a happy Veterans Day and a happy Thanksgiving. Be-ve-ra-cha, Joshua L. Betenu News 3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE: THE TYRANNY OF THE IMMEDIATE One of the great things about the High Holiday season each year is knowing that it brings together familiar faces, sharing in familiar rituals, and fully experiencing the Jewish community that is Betenu. This year, Jeff Ditman shared a great story about how he has been meeting up with Phil Weinshenker every Rosh Hashanah for the past 25 years. A mini Same Time Next Year experience! Each year, I have the opportunity on Rosh Hashanah morning to deliver a State of the Congregation address. I talk about the highs and lows of the year gone by, and give my perspective on how things are going. On Yom Kippur, our Financial VP talks about how we are doing from a financial perspective, and reminds us that we really need those High Holiday donations to keep us going. So, we go from year to year, looking back at the past year and ahead to the next. We have little time to look much beyond and do meaningful long range planning. Last year, as a first step towards building for the future, we established the Chai Fund to encourage small donations throughout the year for the little events that bless our lives. This year, we are kicking off a Long Range Planning Committee to look at ways to build our financial strength, plan for the future of our building, and expand our planning horizon beyond next Rosh Hashanah. I hope this committee will be made up not just of board members, but of a cross-section of the Betenu family. If you would like to help in this important process, please contact me directly at president@betenu.org or dspokane@charter.net, and if you are asked to help I hope that you will find the time to support us. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the tyranny of the immediate with a little long term focus and planning, we can make sure Betenu will continue to serve as a wonderful home for our Jewish community for many years to come. Betenu News 7 COMING UP AT BETENU... RABBI-LED FIRST FRIDAY SERVICE Friday, November 6th, 7:30pm Friday, December 4th, 7:30pm family-friendly service followed by a oneg followed by Torah study with Rabbi. PRE-CHANUKA MEDITATIVE SERVICE WITH RAHEL Friday, December 5th at 4 pm Please join singer/songwriter/cantorial soloist, Rahel, for a pre-chanukah musical meditation and celebration of light, love and the joy of miracles. The meditation is followed by a short Havdalah service and Melave Malkah Chanukah sing along! All are welcome. Bring instruments and voices! Rabbi Debra Orenstein (www.rabbidebra.com) reminds us that, "It is a miracle that Jews, in the days of the Maccabees and today, have managed to survive despite the appeal and acceptance of the general culture (disappearance through assimilation) and, equally, despite the ugly underbelly of intolerance in society (destruction through anti-semitism, oppression, and war). It is a miracle that Jews who love and absorb the dominant culture are nevertheless willing to die for the right to remain Jews. It is a miracle that people possessed of few resources dare to do great things. Remember: a small band of fighters, a tiny cruse of oil, one little idea can change everything." GENERAL BOARD MEETING December 14th, 7:30pm All are invited to attend the general board meetings which are even months (February, April ), usually the third Monday at 7:30pm.
