The Rotary Club in Grantsville is sponsoring Jim Pyles, Director of Safety and Security for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. In observation of Labor Day, we are looking for volunteers to share how God uses them at work. Maybe it s how you were called to your work. Maybe you are retired and can reflect back on your life s work. Or maybe it s how you are a witness at work. Church Center Attending the 141 st AMC meeting from Springs MC were Enos, Naomi and Carolyn Tice, George Dooley, Doug and Harriet Berg, Shirley Brandes, Phoebe Wiley, Eric & Pat Haglund, Hannah Bodes, Brayden Thomas and Molly Piwonka. The youth and young adults led the worship openings. Friday evening Dennis Fisher of Philippi MC reported how their church is working at growing and including young people. They strive to all work together to help others. Speaker Bed Wideman, University MC and Penn State Third Way Collective campus ministry stated, God is working in our communities, even if we aren t. Saturday Marv Friesen, University MC, AMC Moderator. Joy Cotchen, AMC Conf. Minister of Children & Youth, reported camp was a blessing. She reported the youth cleaned the labyrinth on Sunset Hill. Olivia Tennefoss, Grace MC and Hannah Bodes, Springs, shared of the wonderful experience of being on AMC council, enabling them to share the youth perspective. Naomi Tice, AMC News editor, encouraged churches to send her news to share. Dave Mishler, AMC Minister, reported there is a growing sense of enthusiasm, AMC has presently twelve congregations, and has a vision of place-based ministry, serving the local community. Doug Luginbill, Central District Conference minister, one of several visitors from Central District Conference, stated their conference includes forty congregations in ten states. These churches wish to help each other but not control each other. Dave Mishler reported several from our conference have met with church leaders and attended other conference gatherings to gather information. Martinsburg MC, Kaufman MC and Maple Grove MC are transferring. Dave gave the results of a delegate survey previously taken and most of those surveyed favored the option for AMC to merge with another conference.? Terry Shue, MC USA denominational minister to AMC, stated MC USA includes 700 congregations, 18 conferences and 5 agencies. The inevitability of life is change. The average age of members is getting older, congregations are getting smaller and pastors debt is larger.
Erin Leatherman, Morgantown MC, AMC Treasurer, presented the budget. Due to increased individual giving and the income from the New Life MC building sale we can meet our budget. Unless increased giving, there will be a shortfall for 2018. The motion passed to remove designated fund restrictions and permit their use for current operations. (Kimberly? ) represented International Guest House - In fifty years they have had 56,000 guests (35% are international visitors). IGH creates life-giving opportunities for volunteers. The lower level was recently renovated. IGH gives $12,000 each year to AMC. Delegates met in small groups to discuss various affiliation options and how congregations might respond. Five seminars were held in the afternoon. Saturday evening Doug Berg, TriState Relief Sale, reported on a well-attended and successful event. Eric Haglund related the story of his call to the ministry. Tom Tennefoss, Grace MC, spoke on the passage of the Good Samaritan. Sunday morning Dave Garber, Scottdale MC, related the story of the Scottdale MC sewing group Comfort Zone helping with a Syrian family. He stated, When we love as neighbors, it changes us. Leah Rittenhouse, Service Adventure worker gave the message including the following points - something changes when you receive and not just give; it is not about our agenda but about God; and pray and be open to be used by God. The kind of MC USA conference AMC aspires toward: We value an Anabaptist approach to Christian faith and practice. We value place-based ministry and congregational discernment. We value a collaborative and mutual accountability model of conference-level discernment. We value extending the reign of God. Next meeting will be November 4, 2017 at Hyattsville MC.
