Our Lady of Czestochowa Catholic Church Our Lady s Church on the Waterfront 120 Sussex Street, Jersey City, NJ 07302 Our Mission The mission of our parish is to reach out to all people and encourage them to join us in joyfully giving praise and glory to God; to build a Christian community that, with trust in God, embraces the future, and in doing so, is a beacon of faith, hope and love on the Jersey City waterfront. Our History Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, or OLC, was founded in 1911 to serve Polish immigrants to Jersey City. Today, OLC is growing and changing as it seeks to serve all those who now live in our neighborhood. The church takes its name from a city in Poland that houses a cherished icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A copy of that icon is centrally located in our historic church. Rev. Thomas J. Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 15, 2009

Dear Parishioners, I want to share with you some wonderful news about The OLC School and Little Harbor Academy which are an integral and important part of the part of our parish even though they are two blocks away from the church. Many good things are happening there. On Monday, November 2nd, The OLC School was abuzz with activity for a ceremony to thank OLC students Brittany Gibson, Sophia Kolankiewicz, Lisa Leyn, Nikita Pandya, and Marisol Sanders for the relief drive they conducted for the victims of the tsunami in Samoa. All of them are Girl Scout Cadettes from Troop 1-2016. Under the guidance of their Troop Leader, Mrs. Kolankiewicz, the girls collected much needed summer clothing, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap for the Samoan people. Present for the OLC ceremony were: Acting Samoan Ambassador Ms. Rona Meleisea, Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy, Deputy Mayor Kabili Tayari, Mr. Chan, Ms. Brooks and Ms. Zimmerman from the Girl Scout Council, and myself. Each of them expressed their admiration for the work performed by the Cadettes. Before an audience of faculty, staff, and friends, the girls were thanked by the Acting Ambassador and presented with a citation from Mayor Healy. In their special way, these scouts helped to make this big world just a little smaller. Kudos to the Troop 1-2016 Cadettes for making The OLC School shine. Beginning on November 17, The OLC School will offer a six week program for 2 and 3 year olds called Mommy and Me, which is a literacy series to begin developing your child s literacy skills. According to literacy expert Jim Trelease, We read to children for all the same reasons we talk with children: to reassure, entertain, bond with them, inform or explain, arouse curiosity, and to inspire. This program can create a life-long love of reading in your child! Please call the school for enrollment information, (201-434-2405). New Little Harbor Academy is hosting an Open House on Sunday, November 22, 2009 starting at 1:00 pm. You will have an opportunity to meet with the principal, director and teachers at Little Harbor Academy and learn about the pre-school programs for children ages 2 to 5. These are just a few things happening at the school. They are very exciting and they represent just a glimpse of some wonderful things planned for the future in the school. I urge you to attend the open house on November 22 and learn more about the programs. With love, Fr. Tom The readings today speak of the end of the world and the coming of the Kingdom. The bishops pastoral on stewardship says clearly that that life to come is in continuity with this present life through the human goods, the worthy human purposes, which people foster now. May our good stewardship cause us to be numbered among the chosen on the last day! you CAN help with the food drive! The OLC Pastoral Council is sponsoring a food drive to benefit Our Lady of Sorrows Soup Kitchen in Jersey City. We are asking parishioners to please bring canned goods (soups, vegetables, etc.) to all Masses this weekend of November 14 th & 15 th. Thank you for supporting our effort to help local people in need during the Thanksgiving holiday.

CHRISTMAS CHOIR With Christmas fast approaching, it is now time for our seasonal Christmas Choir to begin its rehearsals. The Christmas Choir is a special volunteer choir that sings at our parish s annual Festival of Christmas Song (on Sunday, December 13, 4 pm), the Midnight Mass, and the Christmas Morning Masses. All are welcome and encouraged to join this choir. Rehearsals will be on Saturdays, 2 PM in the church. All music will be provided at the rehearsals along with practice CD s containing all of the songs we will be singing. Joining the Christmas Choir is a great way to sing some beautiful Christmas music, to enjoy the company of wonderfully welcoming choir members, and to give our time and talent to God in a very rewarding way. It also allows us to get into that Christmas Spirit a bit earlier than usual. If you are interested in singing with the Christmas Choir, please e-mail our Music Director Jim Harrold at paulushookpiano@yahoo.com or call him at 201-755-7716.
