CHORAL RESPONSE (11:00) Song of Hope Robert A. Hobby Bel Canto May the God of hope go with us every day, filling all our lives with love and joy and peace. May the God of justice speed us on our way, bringing light and hope to every land and race. Praying, let us work for peace; singing, share our joy with all; working for a world that s new, faithful when we hear Christ s call. MUSIC IN WORSHIP Edwin Earle Ferguson s setting is derived from the Shaker tradition, a Christian subset that has produced music now familiar to most denominations most famously, The Gift to be Simple. As you listen to this morning s anthem, you ll hear the piece grow more intense in tempo, texture, and dynamic; this was certainly intentional, to emulate tradition Shakers ecstatic behavior during worship services. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed Ave Verum Corpus not long before his untimely death at the age of 35. The short eucharist anthem was written for his friend, Anton Stoll. Although simple in length and direction, one can hear similarities between this short piece and Mozart s unfinished opus, Requiem in D Minor - which makes sense, as they were written at the same time. The flowers in the chancel this morning are given for the glory of God and in honor of Jerry Gray and John Purcell - best friends for more than 50 years - by their wives, Sally Gray and Maureen Purcell.
