Dallas Seminary Lay Institute Fall Schedule Eight Week Courses Monday Courses Monday, September 9, 2013- October 28, 2013 4600 Tested Faith: A Study on Dietrich Bonheoffer and the Holocaust Derek Brown Monday, September 9, 2013- October 28, 2013 0208 Jonás y Rut (Jonah and Ruth)* Salvador Zurita 6:45-7:45 pm. (Eight Week, 1 hour class) When Germany invaded Poland in 1939 igniting the Second World War, a group of German conspirators were already plotting a coup to overthrow Hitler. Dietrich Bonheoffer a young pastor was among them. In the late 1930s, he wrote about the necessity of "risking" peace and "daring" a loving presence to others words which seem to fly in the face of his later justification of assassination. Bonheoffer formulated his theology and ethics in the crucible of a long struggle with the Nazi regime in Germany. This class will be an in depth study of who Bonheoffer was, the time he wrote in, the theology he based his life and writings on and the challenges of exercising faith in the midst of war. Textbook: TBD 6:45-7:45 pm. *This class will be taught in Spanish. Monday, September 9, 2013- October 28, 2013 4215 Teaching Scripture Creatively Tyler Short (Special note: 2 hour course) 6:45-7:45 pm. (Eight Week, 2 hour class) The Bible is full of great teachers, God himself being the greatest teacher of all! Because of this truth the goal of any leader in the church today should be to continually increase their effectiveness in their teaching, whether they teach children s Sunday school, or have to fill in for the Pastor s bible study. Teaching Process offers just that. At some point all of our students will be asked to teach, lead a small group, or help with a VBS. Therefore, you should have the skills you need to take on any teaching task maximizing your efforts to the glory of God. In this course the student will study the importance of teaching and the theological implications of good and bad teaching. Also, the students will study the principles of teaching and learning with a special emphasis on creative teaching strategies for use in Christian ministry. Lastly, the student will have the opportunity to teach the class, bringing together all the skills they have learned, and receive feedback from their peers as well as the instructor. This course will meet for two hours each week in order to gain practical experience. Textbooks: Richard Lawrence. Creative Bible Teaching. Chicago: Moody Publishers, 1998.

Monday, September 9, 2013- October 28, 2013 0219 Exploring the Psalms: A Study in Forms and Types of Worship* Kymberli and Travis Cook 8:00-9:00 pm. (8 Week, 1 hour course) Worship is the key to a Christian life well- lived. Service and love overflow out of your adoration of the Lord. Yet the American Evangelical church often has a limited definition (and therefore, practice) of worship, focusing mainly on times of music, preaching and giving. However, the Psalms introduce us to different forms of worship, revealing entire areas of life that can be actively engaged as worship. This course will explore several types of Psalms, the forms of worship they represent and seek to lead students to applying them in their personal worship Textbook: Beach, David R. & Brian Webster. The Essential Bible Companion to the Psalms: Key Insights for Reading God s Word. Grand Rapids:Zondervan, 2010.

Tuesday Classes Tuesday, September 10, 2013- October 29, 2013 6:45-7:45 pm. Classes (1 hour class, Eight weeks) 0250 Philippians: Confident Christianity in Uncertain Circumstances* Richard Morris What should a Christian do when the next step seems unclear? Just like us, the Apostle Paul faced much uncertainty in life. Yet in the midst of uncertainty, he was confident in God. This course is a paragraph- by- paragraph expositional study of Paul s letter to the Philippian church. The class will address Paul s argument; tackle some interpretive problems and highlight literary features and theological motifs. Emphasis will also be placed on contemporary application of the epistle s Christianity suited for every situation. Textbook: Charles B. Cousar. Philippians and Philemon: A Commentary. The New Testament Library. Louisville, KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2009. 4003 Discovering Biblical Discipleship* Mondrell Oz Are there any differences between a believer in Jesus Christ, a Christian, a convert, and a disciple? How would you answer this question? The church s main task is to multiply by making disciples. Why then after more than two thousand years are Christians still confused about who is a disciple? This course helps students untangle a web of terms such as: disciple, discipler, and discipleship. We answer the questions, who were the first disciples, what are distinguishing characteristics of a disciple today, what are the costs, and why must I be part of a Christian community. Using guided discovery we will find answers from Scripture to these and other pertinent questions.

Textbook: TBD Tuesday, September 10, 2013- October 29, 2013 8:00-9:00 pm. (Eight Week Class, one hour class) 1030 It s All Greek To Me* David Or A pastor once said that the difference between reading a Bible in English and Greek is like the difference in watching a TV in black and white and HD television. This course will introduce you to basic Greek grammar, vocabulary. You will be surprised at how many words you will recognize. By gaining the knowledge of Greek, you will learn to love Christ even deeper than before and to appreciate the composition of Scripture s original language. This course will also help students become familiar with concepts used in bible programs. Textbook: William D. Mounce. Greek for the Rest of Us: Using Greek Tools Without Mastering Biblical Greek. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2005. *Qualified course for CEU units/ 8 hours minimum attendance
