Season of Advent: The first Sunday of Advent - December 2 nd Advent has a twofold nature: It prepares us for Christmas, when we recall Christ's first coming among us, and it is also a time when we look forward to his second coming at the end of the ages. Advent is a season of joyful expectation. During Advent, each Sunday's Gospel reading has a specific focus. The Old Testament readings, especially those taken from Isaiah, are prophecies about the Messiah and messianic times. The selections from the writings of the Apostles present exhortations and instructions on different themes of this season.

Remembering our Deceased Family & Friends with Christmas Flowers Once again this year, you are invited to make monetary donations for our Christmas floral arrangements in memory of deceased loved ones. All monies contributed will be used to purchase flowers that will decorate our church throughout the Christmas season. If you would like to donate funds for Christmas flowers in memory of a loved one you may do so by completing the information below & placing it with your donation in a plain envelope. That envelope can be put into the collection basket at mass or dropped off at the office. Names will be in the Christmas bulletin. Thank you to all those who donate to this yearly project. In Memory of: Donated by: Address: $ Amount Envelope # (if applicable)

Throughout the year money donated to our 'needy fund' has been used to help those in need in many ways. This fund is used to help with the Christmas boxes and food requests throughout the year. Our financial support continues to aid Reconnect in providing housing, medical help, work clothing and identification to name a few. St. Bernard's has been an ongoing source of assistance to Reconnect since they began in 2000. Reconnect does an assessment and background check before providing financial assistance. We have also provided financial support to Nazareth House who operate a shelter as one of their many services. Due to much needed renovations at their facility, the shelter will be closed for a period of time. That will create a loss for the homeless who depend on this service. Nazareth House is working to complete the renovations as quickly as possible. Thank you for your support, compassion and generosity throughout the year. More to come... Donations made to Christmas Boxes: Some groups and individuals in the parish choose to make donations specifically for the Christmas Boxes. Those funds are used to purchase all the items in the food box which not only make a turkey dinner for Christmas day, but also has enough food to use throughout the week. Any donations made for Christmas Boxes can be placed in an envelope with your name and if applicable, your envelope number, to receive a receipt for income tax purposes. At St. Bernard's we prepare 50 boxes in collaboration with the Food Depot. Advent Evening Prayer (Liturgy of the Hours) Christians are called in baptism to be people of prayer, to pray always, praising God and pleading for the world. Our priest-moderator, Fr. Carroll, encourages us at the beginning of Advent to be more cognizant of prayer during the Advent season. Why not try gathering with the faith community for Evening Prayer? It only takes up a half hour of your time. We follow the format for Evening Prayer that is offered in our Catholic Book of Worship. All parishioners of our parish unit are invited and encouraged to gather for the Evening Prayer (Liturgy of the Hours) on Thursday evenings at St. Bernard s Church December 6, 13 & 20, 2018 @ 6:00 PM IN THE EVENT OF A STORM OR INCLEMENT WEATHER CANCELLATIONS WILL BE NOTED ON: ST. Best of the MetroTones' Christmas Songs Friday, Dec.14 @ 7:30 PM, at the Moncton Wesleyan Celebration Centre, 945 St. George Blvd., Moncton, NB. In support of Food Depot Alimentaire, Karing Kitchen and Ray of Hope Kitchen. Tickets available at Jean Coutu Pharmacies, Reads Newstands, Sobeys - Vaughan Harvey, The Hospice Shoppe, People's Park Tower Variety, and from any chorus member or by calling 852-9664. Cost: $ 10 per ticket plus a non-perishable food item. Supporting the Karing Kitchen The Karing Kitchen has been serving hot meals Monday to Friday at noontime to the homeless & needy. For many individuals this is their only opportunity to interact with others. St. Bernard's has been an ongoing supporter of the Karing Kitchen for many years. One of the annual events they have is the "Christmas Is A Time For Giving" card. You will see the little red cards at the church entrances. Perhaps, instead of buying Christmas gifts for family or friends, you could donate a number of dinners to the Karing Kitchen. When $1 buys one serving, this is a wonderful gift idea! You can send these to a friend or family member & the note on the card says that a donation to the meals has been made in their honor. Then you fill out the white paper inside the card, put it & your donation in an envelope marked Karing Kitchen & simply place it in the collection basket at mass. We will deliver these envelopes to the Karing Kitchen. Thank you from the hungry of the downtown area. Knights of Columbus Council 1310. Men: Are You Ready to Accept the Challenge? Our communities need strong Catholic men to answer the call to lead with faith, protect our families, serve others and defend our values. For over 100 years, Knights of Columbus have done exactly that, standing up for the Church, serving the least among us, and strengthening our parishes and families. As a member, you join a worldwide community of nearly 2 million men, including 1,000's in NB, who stand together. The world needs more committed, unified Catholic men to answer the call. Will you answer? For more information contact: Grand Knight Paul LeBlanc 854-8147 Financial Secretary Gil Parent 850-1204 or Advocate Tony Baker 857-9668.

The Advent season is the beginning of a new year in our liturgical church life. Advent still remains a time of preparation, however, the focus is on a joyous preparation. The circle of greens with four candles of the same color (white) signifies the unity of the season. We do not break it up with one week being more joyous than another. Advent is clearly identified as a season of anticipation, not of penance. The color white connects us to the white of the Easter Candle (Paschal Candle or Christ Candle). No matter what we celebrate throughout the liturgical year, it is always a part of the Paschal Mystery, the Life, Death, and Resurrection of Christ. We are an Easter people even during this season. With the successive lighting of one, two, three and finally four candles, there is the idea of increasing light. The Advent season should be an accounting of how we have lived our lives over the past year. Have we become better disciples? Has there been a change in our hearts? If not what needs to change? Has our faith life deepened? How? What steps have we taken to work on our relationship with God, with Jesus, with our Church community? What are some of the acts of kindness or generosity that we could do that could start in Advent, but continue on throughout the year? Could we adopt a senior and keep in contact with them throughout the year, by phone calls, cooking a meal, offering to drive them. What about our caregivers who have loved ones they are taking care of. Could we not offer to spend some time and allow them to go out for a few hours to rejuvenate them? What about offering some time for the special care homes? Do you play an instrument? Could you go and offer once a month to entertain? What about members of our community who live with cancer? So often these people feel they are bothering other people. They need help getting groceries, having a meal cooked or other special errands. What about making other justice connections? Advent is meant to be the beginning of a new heart for justice. How will you change this Advent season for the long term?
