Page 3 Pentecost Sunday May 24, 2015 For the last five years, our weekday Masses have been at 7:00 am on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Except during the Lenten season, the attendance at our weekday Masses has ranged from 25 35 people. Over the past two years, there have been many requests to schedule our weekday morning Masses at a later time. I have brought this issue to our Parish Pastoral Council and they have made recommendations. I am grateful for their input. Prior to making a decision, I need to hear from you to ensure that whatever decision is reached will best serve this faith community. I would appreciate it if you would complete the following survey: 1) I will attend if our weekday Masses are at 8:15 am. More than once a week Once a week St Maximilian Kolbe Weekday Mass Schedule Survey 2) I will attend if our weekday Masses are at 8:30 am. St. Mary s University in Los Angeles. The camp is designed to form and mentor young people with an interest in liturgical ministry in their parish or school. Our youth will be tomorrow s (and in many cases today s) musicians, artists, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, sacristans and more, and now is the time to help educate, foster and cultivate that growth. With LAMP So Cal, young people will be formed for liturgy and their intercultural competency to understand the worship needs of the multicultural communities will be built. We re offering partial scholarships on an asneeded basis. Registration is now open at: www. Page 5 Pentecost Sunday May 24, 2015 Reflecting on God s Word Sighs allow us to sit there for a moment or two without breathing just being there at peace and without whatever it is that we just exhaled, without our worry or our confusion or maybe even our inner pain. It s almost as if a sigh is a prayer for new spirit. On the other hand, hiccups are almost like breathing with potholes and speed bumps, like gulps of roughage to keep the good air flowing or maybe they re gulps of spirit to get the body into balance when it s quite content to stay out of balance, a kind of forced prayer. Lately I ve been thinking about sighing and hiccupping. Maybe it s because I ve grown older and sigh more often. Now when I sigh, I find myself deciding to live with life the way it is and saying to myself that it s got to be okay, because like it or not, it s all I ve got. I ve begun to realize that after fighting with some of my sins for sixty-some years without much ever seeming to change, maybe I just need to let God do whatever God is going to do. And so the Spirit sighs, which is another way of saying, Jesus is Lord. On the other hand, after sixty-plus years of living I also keep discovering new sinfulness in my life, little corners that I ve allowed to get dusty by staying out of them. Like greed that I had labeled being practical. Like protecting myself from being used, which turns out to be no more than selfishness. And every once in a while, in a moment of honesty, I ll come across one of those dusty corners, and it s a bit like trying to swallow a peanut butter sandwich without any milk. It s hard to get down, and then you start to hiccup. Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Preventing child abuse is everyone s responsibility It is every adult s moral responsibility to protect possible victims by reporting suspected abuse or neglect to the responsible authorities. Sexual abuse of minors is a pervasive, societal problem, and only rigorous and sustained efforts by all adults in every segment of society can help to protect children and youth. The State of California s Office of Child Abuse Prevention website contains helpful information about how to report abusive behavior and provides contact information of local authorities: http://www.childsworld.ca.gov/ PG2289.htm. For particular help you may call the Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650 ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS Any adult who works with children in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles must be fingerprinted and attend a Virtus child abuse awareness class. Information on child safety is located in the breezeway. Parents: for your children s safety, please accompany them to the restrooms during Mass.

Page 7 Pentecost Sunday May 24, 2015 Day is done, gone the sun From the lake, from the hill From the sky. All is well, safely rest. God is nigh. Thanks and praise, for our days, Neath the sun, neath the stars, Neath the sky. As we go, this we know, God is nigh. Memorial Day Mass Our parish will celebrate mass at 7:00 am A regional mass will also be celebrated at Assumption Cemetery, Simi Valley, Monday, May 25, 10:00 am Getting to know Tim This Memorial Day, we could all say a little prayer for those who died defending America Mary DeTurris Poust stood outside my parish church with a notebook in one I hand and a tissue in the other. I was there to cover a military funeral for a story I was writing, but I had not been able to stop crying since I'd seen the photo in that morning's paper of Captain Timothy Moshier with his baby daughter just before he was deployed to Iraq last December. Now, against a picturesque, almost frivolous, backdrop of magnolia blossoms and bright blue sky, his flag-draped casket was carried past the military honor guard while a lone bagpiper played. I slipped into the back of the standingroom-only church where photos of the young pilot were displayed. From his own childhood to the birth of his daughter and his deployment, the pictures offered a glimpse of this 25-yearold man, whose Apache helicopter went down outside Baghdad on April 1. On one poster board was a list of things you need to know about Tim. By the time I finished this list, I was humbled by the fact that someone so young could be so wise about how to live his life with joy. He proposed to his wife, Katie, during a 3 am meteor shower. He wore his father's shirt into the delivery room for the birth of his only child. He bought his daughter, Natalie, her first pool the day her umbilical cord fell off. He gave his then 4-month-old daughter her first driving lessons before being deployed I'm guessing because somewhere in his heart he knew that he might not be around to give her real driving lessons. Before leaving, he bought Natalie a teddy bear that played his voice saying, I love you, when she squeezed its belly. As I looked at the pictures and listened to his friends speak, I imagined the grief of his mother and father, who were living through every parent's worst nightmare. I imagined the sorrow of his wife, who will have to help their child know her father through stories and pictures. And I cried, as did almost everyone around me in that church. Every person who spoke about this young man talked about his commitment to the military, how he never wanted to go to any school but West Point, how he didn't want to stay home when other troops went off to Iraq, how he believed in what he was doing and felt he was making a difference in this world. It gave me new respect for the young men and women who have volunteered for the armed forces. How does anyone have the courage to leave behind an infant daughter and willingly walk into a war zone on behalf of someone else? This week we celebrate Memorial Day, a holiday that sadly has become not much more than an extra day off from work and a chance to get a bargain on some home appliances. There are still parades and there are still veterans standing outside Target offering red paper poppies for a donation, but the reality is that we really don't do enough to appreciate the men and women who have laid down their lives so the rest of us wouldn't have to. Maybe this Memorial Day we could all say a little prayer for those who died defending our country yesterday, and for those who walk away from their family and friends and all the comforts of home to serve in Iraq or Afghanistan today. Some of them, like Timothy Moshier, have had hardly enough time to get started on their lives. And yet what they've done with the time they've had should leave the rest of us shocked and awed.

You may have noticed that our St Maximilian Kolbe and St Francis statues are missing! Not to worry, they have been transported to a restoration studio for care and maintenance. They have suffered accelerated degradation due to our proximity to the coast. This major restoration involves deep-cleaning, sand-blasting and repatina by some of the same artisans that care for the bronze sculptures at prominent Southern California museums.
