Christ the King Sunday November 24 & 25, 2018 5:00 p.m. & 8:30 a.m. AS WE GATHER This last Sunday in the Church Year is called Christ the King Sunday. But as we look at today s Gospel Reading, Jesus doesn t seem very regal or royal from the cross. Pilate mocks Jesus with the inscription This is the King of the Jews. Jesus hangs and dies beaten, bruised, and bloody. Yet, Jesus is King even from the cross. Going to the cross, Jesus is remarkably in control, warning the daughters of Jerusalem, praying, Father, forgive them, and extending salvation to the repentant thief. That thief must have taken notice of Jesus kingship because he pleads, Remember me when You come into Your kingdom (Luke 23:42). And so we pray: Crucified King Jesus, remember us, and keep us in the faith until You return to reign. PRELUDE Come, Thou Almighty King Albert Travis The congregation turns and faces the cross as the procession approaches the altar reminding us that Christ leads us into the presence of God. Please stand ENTRANCE HYMN 905 Come, Thou Almighty King INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

For as in Adam all die, so in Christ shall all be made alive. Let us confess our sin, asking God to forgive us and cleanse us from its guilt and death. Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You and have resisted Christ s reign in our hearts, minds, and lives. We have often failed to do the good we know is right and have done the evil we know is wrong; there is no excuse for our sin. Frequently we have abused Your gifts of grace and have not helped those in need. Too often we have failed to forgive others as You have forgiven us. Often we have been quick to judge others and slow to seek their forgiveness for the wrongs we have done to them. Lord, You know well our sins even the secret sins of our hearts. We are truly sorry for all our sins and seek Your aid to amend our sinful lives. Have mercy on us, good Lord. According to Your steadfast love, cleanse us from our sin, relieve us from the weight of its guilt, and guide us to know and delight in doing Your will, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE 2

Public domain PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Everlasting Father, You alone are the Lord of heaven and earth! Prepare our hearts for the coming of Your Son that, as we joyfully await His glorious reappearing, we may find in Him our righteousness and salvation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. EXCHANGE OF PEACE WELCOME WORD 3

OLD TESTAMENT READING Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14 9 "As I looked, "thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze. 10 A river of fire was flowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated, and the books were opened. 13 "In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM 8:30 A Celtic Thanksgiving (with This is My Father s World) Joseph M. Martin EPISTLE Revelation 1:4b-8 Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, 6 and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father--to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. 7 Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen. 4

8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty." Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. HYMN 537 Beautiful Savior Please stand The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the eighteenth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. HOLY GOSPEL John 18:33-37 33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" 34 "Is that your own idea," Jesus asked, "or did others talk to you about me?" 35 "Am I a Jew?" Pilate replied. "It was your people and your chief priests who handed you over to me. What is it you have done?" 36 Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place." 37 "You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me." This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. HYMN OF THE WORD 5

783 Take My Life and Let It Be Please stand APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD Please stand DEDICATION OF COMMITMENTS Let us dedicate our commitments to the Lord. Gracious Father, we praise You for Your great gifts to us in Jesus Christ. We rejoice that we are forgiven, loved and called by You into Your family, the church. You have called us to be Your people empowered by Your Spirit to live for You and others in this world. Because of Your great love You give to us, we make these commitments to You, trusting in You to empower us to follow through with these promises. Accept them and use us and these commitments to Your glory and for the advancement of the Gospel and the growth of Your kingdom in this community and throughout the world. In the name of Christ our Lord we pray. Amen. OFFERING O Jesus, King Most Wonderful Wilbur Held 6
