The Life of St. Patrick Informational Tet St. Patrick Feast Day: March 17 Born: 385 :: Died: 461 St. Patrick was born in England to Roman parents. When he was siteen, he was kidnapped by pirates and taken on a ship to Ireland.

There he was sold as a slave. His owner sent him to look after his flocks of sheep on the mountains. Patrick had very little food and clothing yet he took good care of the animals in rain, snow and ice. Patrick was so lonely on the hillside that he turned often in prayer to Jesus. His life was hard but Patrick's trust in God grew stronger all the time. Si years later, he had a dream in which he was commanded to return to Britain. He saw this as a sign and escaped from Ireland.

In Britain he studied to become a priest. Then Patrick had a strong feeling that he had to go back to Ireland to bring that pagan land of non believers to Christ. At last his wish came true. He became a priest and then a bishop. Pope St. Celestine I asked Patrick to go as a missionary and preach first in England then in Ireland. How happy he was to bring the Good News of the true God to the people who once held him a slave. There was always the danger that St. Patrick would be killed, yet the saint kept on preaching about Jesus. He traveled from one village to another where tribe after tribe became Christian. He hardly ever rested.

Before he died, within the thirty three years he worked in Ireland, the whole nation was Christian. St. Patrick was one of the most successful missionaries in the world, but his great success in no way made St. Patrick proud. He called himself a poor sinner and gave all praise to God. Patrick died in 461. Prayer of St. Patrick:

Christ shield me this day: Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I arise, Christ in the heart of every person who thinks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in the ear that hears me. St. Patrick Prayer Service Welcome to our Prayer Service. We are glad you came to celebrate in honoring the life of St. Patrick. We begin in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Today we remember St. Patrick who is the patron saint of our school. He was such a great eample for us to follow. Our school is named after this wonderful man so today we want you to learn a little more about this special friend of Jesus. Opening Song: HAIL GLORIOUS ST PATRICK Lord Jesus Christ, we gather together to hear your Word to us, as we open a new school year at St. Patrick School. As we celebrate the eample of our patron saint, St. Patrick, may we remember that we too are called to follow Jesus. We make our prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians I thank my God for you every time I think of you; and every time I pray for you all, I pray with joy because of the way in which you have helped me in the work of spreading the gospel. And so I am sure that God,

who began this good work in you, will carry it on until it is finished, till the day you meet God face to face. The word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God St. Patrick was a wonderful missionary in Ireland. He spread the Good News of Jesus Christ even when faced with danger. Shouldn t we want to be like St. Patrick and tell others about Jesus? St. Patrick was born in Scotland to Roman parents. When he was siteen, he was kidnapped and taken on a ship to Ireland. There he was sold as a slave. His owner sent him to look after his flocks of sheep on the mountains. Patrick had very little food and clothing. Then Patrick went back to Ireland to bring that pagan land of non believers to Christ. How happy he was to bring the Good News of the true God to the people who once held him a slave. St. Patrick was one of the most successful missionaries in the world but his great success in no way made St. Patrick proud. He called himself a poor sinner and always gave all praise to God.

This is St. Patrick. (Student will gesture towards St. Patrick statue.) He is holding a shamrock which we will tell you about later, snake symbolizing driving our paganism, he was a priest. His Feast Day is March 17 St. Patrick s Day. This statue is in our school library. Have you ever wondered why our school is called the Irish? (Student will show Map) This is Ireland. As we have told you, St. Patrick went all over Ireland preaching, baptising people, and building churches. We too are called to share the good news of God s love. This map is on the wall in the hallway upstairs. Have you ever wondered why we have a shamrock as our school symbol? (Student will show a large Shamrock cut out and a shamrock plant) St. Patrick came to Ireland to tell the Irish people the good news about Jesus Christ. He used a small three leafed plant, called the shamrock to eplain the Trinity. He said: just as the shamrock has three leaves so one God is three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. A Prayer of Thanks: Please respond We Thank You, Lord. We give thanks for St Patrick who worked hard as a slave minding sheep on the hillside. Response: We thank You, Lord We give thanks for St Patrick who returned home to be with his family and for the courage he had to study the Christian way of life. Response: We thank You, Lord We give thanks for St Patrick who desired to increase his knowledge of the Scriptures and to discover what the gift of faith had to offer. Response: We thank You, Lord We give thanks for St Patrick s call to convert the people of Ireland to follow Christ in his way of love. Response: We thank You, Lord

Have you ever been in church and looked up to read the words? Do you know where those words came from? You guessed St. Patrick. The Words in our church are actually St. Patrick s words to God Prayer of St. Patrick: Christ shield me this day: Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I arise, Christ in the heart of every person who thinks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in the ear that hears me. SONG Christ Be With Us So today we celebrate God s gifts of holiness, leadership and service in the life of St Patrick. May we always remember how passionate he was about telling people about Jesus. May St. Patrick School carry on in his eample and share the Good News of Christ with the world! Closing prayer: We go now to live as God s followers as did St. Patrick. We ask God s blessing on us and on all that we do in the name of Jesus our Lord who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, world without end. Amen.

We would like to etend a special blessing on each you in the name of Jesus. May the Lord bless you and keep you. Amen May his face shine on you and be gracious to you. Amen May he look upon you with kindness and give you his peace. Amen Closing: We hope you learned a little more about the life of St. Patrick and why our school is named after him. We end this service in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
