November 18, 2018 Thirty-third Sunday of Ordinary Time November 18, 2018 Deacon Steve Szmutko s Reflection Daniel 12: 1-3 Psalm 16: 5, 8-11 Hebrews 10: 11-14, 18 Mark 13: 24-32 But the wise shall shine brightly like the splendor of the firmament, and those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars forever. (Daniel 12:3) Can you believe that it is already mid-november? As I write these words outside on our deck, there is a brisk northwesterly wind scattering even more leaves across an already carpeted lawn. The sky is a deep blue with puffs of cottony clouds racing by. The temperature is 43 degrees, but with the stiff breeze, it feels biting; even I am getting cold. Many, but not all of the trees are bare; it is only a matter of time before the last stubborn holdouts drop the final remnants of summer foliage to the earth. Thanksgiving will be in a few days, followed by the the Feast of Christ the King the last Sunday of the liturgical year. Soon, the Season of Advent will be upon us. The long hot humid summer is a distant memory. November is a time of transition, when our thoughts turn to endings and beginnings. Today s reading from the Gospel of Saint Mark is a perfect reminder of the fleeting nature of earthly things; Although Jesus still walked among his disciples, he reminded them of the signs of the end, which would culminate in his second coming. Jesus said: Amen I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place, but my words will not pass away. (Mark: 13: 30-31) There are signs to be observed and they point to the coming of the Son of Man. The Lord told them, while these things were imminent, the exact date and time remain uncertain: But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. (Mark 13: 32) By his words, and the ambiguity surrounding the timing of Christ s return, we are cautioned against complacency. We are challenged to act with mindfulness and live each day with love and compassion as if it were our last. As Disciples of Christ, we must be followers of the Gospel, as sons and daughters of God, so that we might be ready for his second coming, not with fear, but with faithful anticipation. Deacon Steven K. Szmutko On Sunday, November 11, 2018, Deacon Steve Baptized Lorenzo Cruz Collazo Pictured here with Deacon Steve and Lorenzo are his parents Chaya and Alexis, Godmother, Jessica Collazo and Godfather, Blair Mills as well as his proud siblings Orlando and Alana. Congratulations and Welcome Lorenzo to the Catholic Church and the Our Lady of Good Counsel Family. We wish you a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving! Fr. Mike, Fr. Jason, Deacon Steve and the OLGC Staff Give Thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His Love endures forever. I Chronicles 16:34 0533olgc 3
