WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Service for the Lord s Day and The Presbytery of Middle Tennessee s Service of Installation Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 24, 2018 11:00 a.m. GATHERING (Silence during the Prelude is requested in preparation for worship.) *PRELUDE Allegro from Sonata V, BWV 529 J.S. Bach *CALL TO WORSHIP Cristi Scott Let us worship God! (Those who are able may stand.) Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Psalm 100:1-2 Worship the Lord with gladness. Come into God s presence with singing! *PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Almighty and eternal God, by your grace you have called us in this time and place to be your servant people as we follow our servant Lord. Make your Holy Spirit move within and among us, that together we may live a new life in the crucified and risen Christ. Bind us together in faith, so that as we receive all spiritual gifts needed to fulfill our calling, we may support one another in common ministry; through Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord. Amen. (The Cross and Bible lead the procession, symbolic of the centrality in worship of Jesus Christ - the Living Word, and the Bible - the written Word.)

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN 267 Come, Christians, Join to Sing MADRID 2

CALL TO CONFESSION Rachel Pence Before God, with the people of God, let us confess to our brokenness: to the fears that hold us back, and the ways we pass on hurt. Believing that God is faithful to forgive let us confess our sins. *PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of grace and mercy, by water and your Holy Spirit you baptized us to be your own and called the church into being. We confess that we hold back the power of your Spirit among us. We do not listen for your word of grace, speak the good news of your love, or live as a people made one in Christ. Have mercy on us, O God. Grant us the courage to be the people you have called us to be. Transform our lives by the power of your Holy Spirit, and make strong our common witness as we follow Jesus Christ. Amen. (Silent confession) Kyrie (Sung responsively by the choir and congregation) Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (The liturgist pours water, which reminds us of our baptism.) Believe the Good News: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! *The Peace Since God in Christ has forgiven us, let us also forgive one another. The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. Hal H. Hopson (Please exchange the peace with the words, The peace of Christ be with you. ) 3

*ACT OF PRAISE This Is the Feast of Victory (Hymn 513) FESTIVAL CANTICLE (The congregation is invited to sing with the choir.) Refrain: This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Sing with all the people of God, and join in the hymn of all creation. Refrain. *CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SCRIPTURE (Everyone is asked to sign the Friendship Register, which is located on the center aisle end of each pew.) THE WORD Hear the Word of God! Our ears are open. Isaiah 52:1-10 (Old Testament, page 683 in your pew Bible) Psalm 98 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Refrain: Guy D. Griffith Ashley McFaul-Erwin David Haas Marty Haugen Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; his right hand has won the victory for him, his holy arm. Refrain. The Lord has made his salvation known, his justice revealed to all; Remembered his kindness and faithfulness to Israel. Refrain. All of the ends of earth have seen salvation by our God. Joyfully sing out, all you lands, break forth in song. Refrain. Sing to the Lord with harp and song, with trumpet and with horn. Sing in your joy before the king, the king, our Lord. Refrain. 1 Timothy 5:17-18 (New Testament, page 210 in your pew Bible) 4

A LITANY OF GIFTS INSTALLATION As in one body we have many parts, and each part has its own function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have different gifts according to the grace God has given us. Let us not lack for enthusiasm, but be ardent in spirit, serving the Lord, rejoicing in hope, trusting in God, constant in prayer, supporting one another, and welcoming all. STATEMENT ON THE MINISTRY OF THE CHURCH We are called out by God to be the Church of Jesus Christ, a sign in the world today of the new life that God intends for all Today we reclaim our historic calling and reclaim the great ends of the church: Don Schulze Ed Lancaster The proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind; the shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God; the maintenance of divine worship; the preservation of the truth; the promotion of social righteousness; and the exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world. Book of Order, F-1.0304 PRESENTATION OF THE PASTOR-ELECT We remember with joy our common calling to serve Christ, and we celebrate God s call to our sister, Heidi, to serve among us as pastor. CONSTITUTIONAL QUESTIONS PRAYER OF INSTALLATION James Hudnut-Beumler The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 6

All praise be yours, Lord God of our salvation Make us the community you have called us to be, for by the power of the risen Christ you gather us together to be his body, called to proclaim your marvelous love. Gracious God, we praise you that you have chosen servants in every age to speak your Word and lead your loyal people. We give you thanks for your servant Heidi, and for the ministry to which you have called her. Give Heidi a full measure of the gifts of your Holy Spirit both in the walk of faith and for the work of ministry. Anoint Heidi with power to proclaim the gospel in Word and Sacrament, in witness and service, in truth and in love, for the building up of the people of God and for the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. Generous God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon this congregation and strengthen us by the power of your Holy Spirit now and forever. Amen. OFFERING THANKSGIVING Anthem Dear Lord, Creator, Good and Kind C.H.H. Parry Dear Lord, Creator, good and kind, forgive our foolish ways; Reclothe us in our rightful mind; In purer lives, Thy service find, In deeper rev rence, praise. In simple trust like theirs who heard, Beside the Syrian sea, The gracious calling of the Lord, Let us, like them, without a word, Rise up and follow Thee. Drop Thy still dews of quietness, Till all our strivings cease: Take from our souls the strain and stress, And let our ordered lives confess The beauty of Thy peace. *DOXOLOGY Breathe thro the heats of our desire Thy coolness and Thy balm; Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; Speak thro the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still small voice of calm! Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below: Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! *PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. LASST UNS ERFREUEN Gracious God, whose heart abounds with gifts, we thank you for your abundant blessings in our lives.
