Today s Meditation TIME The holidays are well behind us; the year stretches out ahead. And what sort of year will it be? To judge by the words of Jesus in today s Gospel, it will be a year acceptable to the Lord. And Jesus surely didn t mean only the next three hundred sixty-five days facing his listeners at that time. When Jesus announced the arrival of God s favor, it was a message for all time, for every year. Similarly, we read today in Nehemiah how the people gathered with solemnity to hear God s word as though for the first time. They listened, and then fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet said, Today is holy... do not be sad, and do not weep. The year acceptable to the Lord is this year. The day that is holy is this day. The time to listen is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort of day? God s help is always here. What you do with each day can be holy and acceptable to the Lord if you but listen to and act on God s word. Copyright J. STEWARDSHIP SAINT FOR THE DAY - JAN. 31 John Bosco (1815-1888), priest (Memorial) Born to poor parents in northern Italy, St. John Bosco began his ministry by providing shelter and religious instruction for neglected boys. His own education was made possible by the gift of a generous benefactor, and St. John Bosco was not too proud to seek the support of other wealthy and powerful patrons to expand his work. With others drawn to this ministry, he provided religious and vocational training to hundreds of young men and formulated a system of education based on reason, religion, and kindness. 22 Let us regard those boys over whom we have some authority as our own sons, he wrote. There must be no hostility in our minds, no contempt in our eyes, no insult on our lips. We must use mercy for the present and have hope for the future, as is fitting for true fathers who are eager for real correction and improvement. 23 St. John Bosco used his personal history, his love for young people, and his gift for teaching to educate, inspire, and improve the lives of many. May his example prompt us to prayerfully re-assess who we are and what we have -- and how we can use those gifts for others. -Steward Saints for Every Day by Sharon Hueckel

Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
