De a r Pa r i s h i o n e r s o f St. An t h o n y o f Pa d u a Ch u r c h & Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, The International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima visits St. Anthony of Padua Church, Eunice, Louisiana December 3, 2016 The International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima, traveling around the world since 1947, is on a two-year journey across America, visiting 100 dioceses. The Fatima Centennial U.S. Tour for Peace, March 2016 - December 2017, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of the Angel of Peace (1916) and the Blessed Mother (1917) at Fatima, Portugal. It will be in the Diocese of Lafayette from December 1-4, 2016: Dec. 1-2 at St. Francis Regis Church, Arnaudville; Dec. 3 at St. Bernard Church, Breaux Bridge; Dec. 3 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Eunice; Dec. 4 at St. Peter Church at Carencro. At St. Anthony of Padua, Eunice the Statue will be received at the beginning of the 4:00 p.m. mass and remain after mass for visits and prayer until 10:00 p.m. The International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Fatima was sculpted in 1947 by famous sculptor Jose Thedim, upon the precise instructions of Sister Lucia. On October 13, 1947, the stature was blessed by the Bishop of Fatima and commissioned to serve as the Pilgrim Virgin that would carry the blessings of Fatima throughout the world. SOURCE: World Apostolate of Fatima, USA www.fatimatourforpeace.com. ADVENT Advent is a time of waiting and hoping, of renewing our trust in God s merciful love and care, and of reflecting on the three comings of Christ in our lives: His coming at his birth, his coming at the end of human history and his coming in-between his birth and end of human history in our prayer and sacraments, in our everyday lives, and at the moment of our death. Let us embrace the Prince of Peace in our lives, especially as we receive the visit of the pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima on the U.S. TOUR FOR PEACE. PLEASE REMEMBER THESE ADVENT ACTIVITIES: The Light is on for You! For St. Anthony Church confession times are on the first three Wednesdays of Advent from 6:30 p.m. 8:00 p.m. For Annunciation Church confession times are on the second and third Wednesdays of Advent from 6:30 p.m. 8:00 p.m. The Tri-Parish Advent Penance Service is at St. Thomas More Church on Monday, December 19, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. The Giving Tree Advent Program is at both Annunciation Church and St. Anthony Church. Gospel for the First Sunday of Advent, Cycle A Matthew 24:37-44 Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. Jesus doesn t tell us when he will come again; but he does tell us all we need to know. First, he leaves no doubt in our minds that he will in fact return this is not a question we have to debate. And secondly, he tells us what we need to do to be ready: stay awake! As long as we do not doze off while we are waiting, everything will be all right. So our task is a relatively simple one. We are called to be on the lookout. We are supposed to be ready for the Lord when he appears. This is a straightforward instruction to be sure. But it does contain an inherent challenge: it is often much easier to hit the snooze button than to get up and start moving. It is our task, however, to make sure we do not give in to the temptation to fall back asleep. This is what the season of Advent helps us to do. It is like the Church s alarm clock, ringing with persistence in our ears: Wake up! Throw off the covers of apathy and distraction! Jesus is coming! Get up and get your house in order before he arrives! What exactly this means will be different for all of us the particular behaviors we need to change, the specific virtues we need to develop all of this is unique to each person. But our common goal is the same to clean house in our hearts and make ourselves ready to welcome the Lord. Yes, his return at the end of time will be a momentous event, but even if we never experience it during our lifetime, Jesus still wants to come to us here and now, to dwell in our hearts through the presence of his Spirit. This Advent, let us be ready to welcome the Lord every minute of every day. Questions of the Week Matthew 24:37-44: Jesus warned his followers to be ready for his return and the advent of the end-time. How are you preparing for the return of the Son of Man? Isaiah 2:1-5: In what ways do you see our nation open to hearing and obeying God s word? Romans 13:11-14: Paul cultivated a sense of urgency for the faith with the Christians in Rome. How can we do likewise in our faith communities? Rev. Msgr. J. Robert
