SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY January 20, 2019 AS WE GATHER We all have many cares and worries in life. Chances are you arrived to worship this morning carrying some of those concerns upon your heart and mind. If that s true, know that today s service is designed for you! As we witness Jesus first miracle at the Cana wedding feast, we also learn from the experience of His mother, Mary. Mary was worried about the host family they ran out of wine! She wanted to help, but she knew only one thing to do. She committed the situation to Jesus, knowing He would take care of it. And that He did! Much more than helping provide refreshment for wedding guests, Jesus revealed His power and glory. And His disciples believed in Him (John 2:11). Today, may you do the same. Commit your concerns to the One who gave Himself for you and invites you to believe in Him. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC THE WELCOME THE RITE OF FRIENDSHIP PREPARATION OPENING SONG A Shield About Me Thou, O Lord, are a shield about me. You re my glory. You re the Savior of my soul. Thou, O Lord, are a shield about me. You re my glory. You re the Savior of my soul. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. You re the Savior of my soul. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. You re the Savior of my soul. 3

P: Let us come before our holy God, seeking the blessing of His peace through the purifying work of our Savior Jesus Christ. Take time for silent reflection upon our need for Christ s forgiveness. P: Holy God, merciful Father, C: we confess that we have not followed our Savior as we ought. By what we have done, and by what we have failed to do, we have not honored You in lives of holiness. Purify our hearts, merciful Father, through the presence of Jesus Christ, that we be blessed with the forgiveness He freely offers to us all. Amen. P: Jesus stands in your midst today and speaks into your ears the words of life that bring healing to your souls. As His called and ordained servant, I announce His grace to all of you and, in His stead and by His command, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. This is my story this is my song, Praising my savior all the day long; This is my story this is my song, Praising my savior all the day long; Perfect submission, perfect delight, Visions of rapture now burst on my sight; Angels descending bring from above Echos of mercy, whispers of love. This is my story this is my song, Praising my savior all the day long; This is my story this is my song, Praising my savior all the day long; Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Saviour am happy and blest; Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love. This is my story this is my song, Praising my savior all the day long; This is my story this is my song, Praising my savior all the day long; SALUTATION P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, who governs all things in heaven and on earth, mercifully grant that as we commit our cares to You, we may trust in the blessing of Your presence and peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 6

OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 62:1 5 (God is the Bridegroom to His people.) For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch. 2 The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. 3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. 5 For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. GRADUAL Psalm 117:1-2a; 96:8 ALL: Praise the LORD, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, And the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; Bring an offering, and come into his courts! EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 12:1 11 (God gives the gifts of His Spirit for the common good.) Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I want you to 7

understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says Jesus is accursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except in the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA AND VERSE ALL: Alleluia. This, the first of His signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested His glory. Alleluia. THE HOLY GOSPEL John 2:1 11 (Jesus works His first sign at the Cana wedding feast) P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the second chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. 4 And Jesus said to her, Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come. 5 His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. 6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast. So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though 8

the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now. 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. THE CREED The Apostles Creed C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY Songs of Thankfulness and Praise LSB 394 1 Songs of thankfulness and praise, Jesus, Lord, to Thee we raise, Manifested by the star To the sages from afar, Branch of royal David s stem In Thy birth at Bethlehem: Anthems be to Thee addressed, God in man made manifest. 9

2 Manifest at Jordan s stream, Prophet, Priest, and King supreme; And at Cana wedding guest In Thy Godhead manifest; Manifest in pow r divine, Changing water into wine; Anthems be to Thee addressed, God in man made manifest. 3 Manifest in making whole Palsied limbs and fainting soul; Manifest in valiant fight, Quelling all the devil s might; Manifest in gracious will, Ever bringing good from ill; Anthems be to Thee addressed, God in man made manifest. 4 Sun and moon shall darkened be, Stars shall fall, the heav ns shall flee; Christ will then like lightning shine, All will see His glorious sign; All will then the trumpet hear, All will see the Judge appear; Thou by all wilt be confessed, God in man made manifest. 5 Grant us grace to see Thee, Lord, Present in Thy holy Word Grace to imitate Thee now And be pure, as pure art Thou; That we might become like Thee At Thy great epiphany And may praise Thee, ever blest, God in man made manifest. SONG Create in Me Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me Cast me not away from thy presence, O Lord, and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and renew a right spirit within me. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me Cast me not away from thy presence, O Lord, and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and renew a right spirit within me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and renew a right spirit within me. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Father in heaven, we thank and praise You for Your great goodness in sending Jesus Christ, Your Son, who revealed His glory by His presence and first miracle at Cana in Galilee. Grant that we, who have been welcomed to feast at His Table this day, receive and rejoice in His mercy. C: Jesus, we are blessed by Your presence. P: We pray this day for the ministry of the Gospel, both here at Concordia and throughout the world. Wherever the name of Jesus is proclaimed, grant that hearts be changed by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Lord, continue daily to add to our number those who are being saved. C: Jesus, we are blessed by Your presence. P: In Your earthly ministry, O Lord, You were often surrounded by family and friends. We, too, are blessed with loved ones who give us opportunities to show our love for You by loving them also. Bless all Christian families that in our worship to You and our service to one another we rejoice in Your goodness all our days. C: Jesus, we are blessed by Your presence. 11

P: Your work of healing, Lord Jesus, caused Your fame to spread as people beheld Your glory. Your healing ministry continues on earth even now through the gifts of medicine, health professionals, and all who care for those in need. We lift before you all those in our faith family who need Your healing touch today, [especially...]. Great Physician, we ask that You take great care of each of these for whom we pray. C: Jesus, we are blessed by Your presence. P: Lord God, Your presence is known among us by the ongoing work of Your Holy Spirit. Enable all who are baptized to proudly bear Your name each day, that we use our various vocations to give You glory. Be especially with those whose work is difficult and dangerous, including all public servants and members of the military, that we dwell in safety and peace. C: Jesus, we are blessed by Your presence. P: These and all other prayers, which are upon our minds and hearts, we commit to You, dear Father, in the saving name of Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. C: Jesus, we are blessed by Your presence. Amen! LORD S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9 13) C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen. 12

CLOSING HYMN Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me LSB 761 1 Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee; Let the water and the blood, From Thy riven side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure: Cleanse me from its guilt and pow r. 2 Not the labors of my hands Can fulfill Thy Law s demands; Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and Thou alone. 3 Nothing in my hand I bring; Simply to Thy cross I cling. Naked, come to Thee for dress; Helpless, look to Thee for grace; Foul, I to the fountain fly; Wash me, Savior, or I die. 4 While I draw this fleeting breath, When mine eyelids close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, See Thee on Thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee. Concordia Lutheran Church s Covenant with One Another How Do We Love One Another at Concordia Lutheran Church? 1. We will behave in a spirit of forgiveness always speaking well of others with love and kindness knowing that God created every human being in His image and we will always show respect for others despite our mutual failures, acknowledging shortfalls and willing to forget prior harms. 2. We will promote and practice honest conversations following the 8 th Commandment to speak well of each other, avoiding gossip by redirecting people to the appropriate person and avoiding anything that would cause divisions in the Body of Christ. 3. We will lift up each other in prayer in all that we do by turning to God for guidance and support, showing our gratitude and thanksgiving, and realizing we depend on Him for our entire existence. 4. We will offer a hand of hospitality welcoming all people by acknowledging the presence of others, greeting everyone with concern for them and openly sharing our biblical faith with everyone in word and deed. 5. We will be positive and joyful sharing openly our happiness in the Lord with fun, positive humor and inclusive fellowship always defending each other, speaking well of each other, and putting the best construction on everything.
