CARILLON DECEMBER 2013 MISSION: CHRISTMAS by Anna Guillozet If just the thought of your Christmas shopping takes your breath (and sanity) away, think about supporting King Avenue s Mission: Christmas. This event, held the first three Sundays in December (before and after worship), will help us reframe and reclaim the Christmas culture that consumer America has created. Browse the marketplace and consider giving a gift to King Avenue s Mission Teams and Partnerships in honor of your friend, parent, partner, child, or grandchild. Always dread filling stockings? Fill a stocking with a card noting an alternative gift! Questions? Contact Pastor Anna at anna@kingave.org. This event is held in conjunction with December s Mission: Christmas Sunday School class (see below). Cash, Checks, and Credit Cards will be accepted. Join Pastor Anna and other leaders from King Avenue s Mission Team in exploring how we can reframe our understanding of Christmas. With consumer culture raging, this class will help us examine how our hearts and spirits are linked to our bank accounts. As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ, let s focus ourselves for Mission: Christmas! This four-week class meets Sundays, December 1-22. It has been home to over 200 children since opening in 2005. These children are placed in the orphanage by social workers because they have been abused or neglected or abandoned by their parents. The casa provides a safe and loving home, whether the children are there for a month or for ten years. The orphanage does not get any financial support from any government agency, but relies instead on the gifts of American and Mexican individuals and churches. King Ave UMC sends two mission teams each year to visit with the children, help with chores and strengthen our partnership through fellowship. For more information about the Board of Global Ministries, or to donate to other c a u s e s, v i s i t http://www.umcmission.org/ Give-to-Mission/The-Advance. * Global Ministries will allocate the matching funds dollar for dollar up to the first $500,000 in gifts to projects received online on December 3, 2013, between 12:00 a.m. EST and 11:59 p.m. A maximum of $10,000 per individual gift to a project will be dispersed as matching funds. P AGE 8 DECEMBER 2013 YEAR-END GIVING INFORMATION by Diana Sells As we near the end of the year, many people will want to catch up on their 2013 King Avenue UMC pledge or make additional donations. There are several things to keep in mind if you want your contribution or pledge to be deductible on your 2013 income taxes. delivered to the church office by 3pm on December 30 th (the office will be closed on December 31 st ). The IRS requires that all pledges or donations collected on the first Sunday in January (whether they are intended for your 2013 or 2014 pledge and regardless of the check date) be reported as 2014 contributions for income tax purposes. Second, there are many tax advantages to transferring appreciated stock to the Church. If this is something you are interested in doing, please ask your broker to contact Robert D. Meyers at Wells Fargo 866-507-5839. To If you are issuing a check or cash donation to the church, the effective date of your contribution is the date that it is hand delivered or mailed. Thus, please make sure that any 2013 contributions are post marked on or before December 31 st, placed in the offering plate on Sunday, December 29 th, or handqualify as a 2013 donation, the stock must be transferred into King Avenue s Wells Fargo account #4197-6905 no later than the close of business on Monday, December 30 th (the office will be closed on December 31 st ). Also, please notify Reb e c c a N a a s, r e - becca@kingave.org or me, diana.sells@gmail.com of your intention so that your giving statement can be properly documented. If you have any questions or concerns, please cont a c t m e, diana.sells@gmail.com, or (614) 670-1254. NEW LIFE UMC by Sharon Poole New Life continues to be in need of boxes of cereal, especially Cheerios and Raisin Bran. Winter coats are still needed, as well as socks, underwear, and gloves.

CARILLON P AGE 9 RUMMAGE WRAP UP by Marge Horrocks The King Avenue United Methodist Women (UMW) wrapped up their 2013 rummage sales by clearing their treasury on November 5. We were blessed with over $21,000 to spend on our mission requests and budgeted items. The largest amount ($7,000) was sent via our West Ohio pledge to mission through the UMW Board of Global Ministries. We also place specific items in our yearly budget to support them without fail. The challenging part for us is taking the balance of the funds (approx. $11,000) to share between our local and national projects. The largest gifts went to NNEMAP and the State ID/Birth Certificate Assistance Ministry run by Stone Village Church. Each were awarded $3,000. Our pastors discretionary fund was given $1,500. To see the complete list please check the UMW bulletin board in the hallway on the 1st floor by the elevator. We never have enough money but how blessed we have been to do these. Our world mission requests will be covered by monies generated by our endowed Risley McCormick Metcalf Fund at a later date. We continue to prepare for our 2014 sales. Rummage may be brought in on Wednesdays, 6-7:30pm, and on Sunday mornings after each worship service. Your donations make all this possible. NNEMAP by Anne Nelson Columbus has 22% of its residents living below the poverty level. Thank you for supporting the mission of NNEMAP in providing food for more than 2,000 every month! The Fraser Fir Christmas trees and greens sale supports the pantry for a month. There are 32 churches that support NNEAMP and King Avenue is the number one supporter of the Christmas tree sale. Consider remembering NNEMAP in your year-end tax deductable giving. Community Shares of MidOhio, of which NNE- MAP is a member, is a work place giving campaign that allows you to give to NNE- MAP using payroll deduction an easy way to contribute! Check with your employer. Consider joining 15 other King Avenue volunteers at the pantry as you plan your time for 2014. Emergency needs in the pantry this month are baby food and diapers, sugar, flour and laundry detergent. We cannot get these items from Mid-Ohio Foodbank.
