Disclaimers This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, businesses, places, events and incidents are either the products of the author s imagination or used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental. v

About The Book Story begins with a teenage boy from fearless Italian elite Sicilian family, takes revenge and turns to be the boss of Italian American Mafia in New York. He becomes nothing less than ruthless crusader of his mission to be the most powerful man of mafia business. His family life changes when he gets introduced with an Indian boy who is charismatic enough and armed with oratory skills. The story then gets combined with Indian family, where war takes place between morality and ego. After many thrilling incidents and crime scenes, the story turns to be something different as initially a reader guesses it is located in USA only, but when American mafia gets its branches stretched in an Indian city named Darbhanga. The story is full of the twists and turns and so much realistic as any reader can feel that he or she is the part of the story. As this story is full of human feelings and relationships as well as it tries to give the perspective of the people who are always fiercely fight with guns and their shrewdness vi

for the sake of power and money and of those who are on the other side, always stand for their morality and how both kind of people coexist by the bound of love and relationships. Story runs from 1930 s to present day and it connects the dots between Palermo, Italy and New York, United States of America and Darbhanga, India. Perhaps it is more than just any another mafia fiction which talks about only crimes. vii

Kumar Kaushik Angelo s Sicilian Incident (1937) Around 6 am on Wednesday, 9 June 1937, when a 18 years old, 6 feet tall, well-formed head, stretched out from front to back, and moderate in breadth, elliptical face, well defined features and elegantly formed jaws. His complexion was fair enough to identify him as a typical Mediterranean type Italian. He was sitting inside Talbot-Lago T150-C Car with a man wearing hat and whose age was around 50 years old but looking much younger than his real age. The boy was reading one of the leading newspapers of Sicily, which along with all the other newspapers published the same photograph of Tuesday s crime scene. It was the picture that shown Giovanni Mattini s body enclosed by a sheet, only his hands on show outside the car s window, he was driving. News also published that a pistol model Beretta M 1934 lying outside of the window just below his hand on the street. The Crime scene was the result of the evolution of crime after a decade of violence in the Sicilian crime capital Palermo. 1

The Don of Darbhanga After reading the news Angelo turned his head towards the aged one and as eyes met then the aged man spoke Angelo...its time to take tough decision and I feel you can understand it Angelo stopped for a while But Sir, I don t want to leave this place, as I want to finish all my remaining tasks here... Aged man interrupted him In this world no one can finish his work as life is also short of time compared to tasks Angelo again spoke Mattini and Cerona who invited me in this crime world by killing of my family members and I accepted it Aged one just opened his hat and spoke Angelo, don t make temporary feelings destruct your future permanently Angelo spoke For me, my life is to take revenge with all those who took away lives of my family members so I don t fear of losing mine too The aged man then got bit distressed and tried to convince him Please go to Genoa...Where my friend, Andre Greco, lives there and having a wine business, please tell him that you are sent by me, Carlo Galletti, if you tell my words you can work there, and after some time, he will surely do according to the needs of yours. Angelo reluctantly agreed All right I will go there but I will surely come again here for my remaining tasks 2

Kumar Kaushik Carlo Galletti calmed down and thanked to God and kept quiet. Meanwhile there was Curfew took place after the killing of Giovanni Mattini and his gang members started to vandalise many shops and killed at least seven mafia bosses of opponent gangs. Police crackdown many of the mafia gangs and there were scenes like of any war in Palermo. People of Palermo have always been known for their bravery and it ought to be happened. Angelo in the midnight boarded a ship which ferried him towards Genoa, a city famous for being international port. On the midway, he came on the middle of the ship and looked up the clouds shaped like human figures and immersed in the thoughts about the night which changed his family life forever. It was February 1937 when his father, stefano Bianchi, who was judge at Palermo going to give verdict on the cases of Veteran mafia boss Giovanni Mattini and his associate Antonio Cerona. But one night before the judgment a phone ranged to Stefano who was reading one of the books written by H L A Hart as he was also well versed in many languages including French, English and German. Stefano walked towards to phone and hold the receiver and spoke Hello A very sober voice came from other side Hello Sir 3

The Don of Darbhanga Stefano asked Who are you Sir Voice got more cold Perhaps you know me because you are giving your final judgment tomorrow on the case of my nephew. Stefano bit got angry Please clarify who are you and what you like to talk about The voice replied very politely Sir, I am uncle of Giovanni and right now I am having your wife and daughter with me Stefano got panicked and shouted How dare to take them and if anything will happen I would not spare you Voice on the other side remained self disciplined Sir we are doing nothing with them, as they will be relieved the moment, after you give your final verdict Stefano in harsh voice What does it mean The caller replied It means if you will relive my nephew and his associate then your family will be returned to you safely...otherwise their dead bodies with respect will be arrived at your home Stefano shouted I won t spare you if anything will happen to my family and my judgment will remain the same, whatever you do Then phone was called off. Stefano called the Police immediately and Police started to search for his wife and daughter, but in vain as they couldn t find them in whole Sicily. Next morning Stefano announced his judgment that both of the culprits as guilty and 4

Kumar Kaushik sentenced them to life imprisonment. He shown courage for his duty and put moral values over the personal affections of his loved ones. After reaching home, the police head of Palermo came to him and said in distressed voice Sir, we couldn t save your daughter and wife, both were killed in raid inside a house in the town of Albanesi, where they were kept as hostage by the kidnappers and shots were exchanged. Some of the shots wounded your wife, who was killed at the moment and your daughter, on the way to the hospital. Police officer continued Two of the criminals were also killed...but sorry I couldn t save your family Stefano fell from his chair and when he woke up he found his 17 years son, Angelo, was holding his hand leaned backwards on the chair and half slept. He tried to speak loudly Angelo!!, but voice didn t come out as per his wish. In the mid he again tried but his heart pain increased and he pulled the hand of Angelo then he woke up and found his father was writhing in pain. Angelo shouted Doctor...please save my father Doctor came rushing to his dad s bed and checked his pulse which was going down and after few minutes of try he said Sorry Angelo, we could not save him 5

The Don of Darbhanga A loud voice All passengers must ready to get down brought back Angelo to the present moment on the Ship and all the sad memories of losing his family faded away with a wave of shiver with cool wind coming from eastern side of the ship. 6

Kumar Kaushik Angelo Falls In Love With Julia And Migration To USA (1938) Angelo after reaching the port of Genoa, took a taxi and told the driver to take him to the home of Andre Greco. The taxi driver took no moment to recognize Andre Greco, as he was the member of the upper middle class and the son of Italian Wine business gentry. Andre s unique feature was his slothful attitude towards all the friends he had then Andre raised this trait to an art form. He expanded his wine business from Italy to offshore and then he started to export even England and USA. That afternoon when Angelo approached to Andre s home, he just knocked the door of the old house, where Andre used to live. After knocking few times, the door was opened by Andre himself. Andre said So you have been sent by my friend Carlo Galletti. Angelo replied Sir yes, so he has already informed about me Andre said All right, but what is your motive about future Angelo answered I don t know that Andre said If you don't know what is the motive you're existing for, you don't be 7

The Don of Darbhanga concerned how you survive from one day to the coming future. Angelo answered quietly But If the motive has itself lost its meaning then Andre smilingly answered If you think on which instant your heartbeat saying something to you, then your heart will start to begin beating harder and harder unexpectedly, and there will take place an everlasting commitment for the something higher value for which we have been sent here to the earth. In the middle of the conversation a girl who was pretty enough to attract any one arrived and caught the attention of Angelo, who tried to control his emotions and looked away for her. Andre introduces Angelo to a young girl almost 18 years old and called Julia is my only child and daughter, and she is good painter Julia quietly spoke Dad why you are exaggerating about my painting, I just draw ordinarily paintings with little help of colors Andre said Angelo...please tell how this portrait is which has been made by her He told Angelo by pointing one of the landscape portrait hanging on the wall. Angelo without doubt said It s beautiful Julia smiled and said Please don t make me fool Angelo said quietly I am saying true, as it is really master piece because the color combinations are perfectly blend with Short, thick strokes of the paint. This paining also captures the essence of the subject, and it 8

Kumar Kaushik gives a rather new perspective than ordinary details. The paint even proves perfect shadows along with the sunrays coming behind the trees Julia got impressed with the beautiful review of her painting and curiously said So you know so much about painting Angelo replied A little bit as my mother used to make paintings and she was true impressionist and I used to watch her doing all the painting stuff Andre s voice interrupted the conversation he requested to Julia Please take Angelo, nephew of my old friend Carlo. He has come from Palermo to stay with us please take him to the left corner room of upper floor. Julia answered Alright Dad Perhaps Angelo already fell in love with her. But, he tried to remain normal and his indifference was obvious as he came there for shelter and job and not to be fallen for love. One thing is true that whatever you want, love can t be hidden for long time. After some time Angelo started to come to Andre s wine shop and learnt almost everything for becoming a good wine businessman. His hard work always kept him on the higher altitude in the mind of Andre and also started to share his business secrets. As time was passing by, the closeness between Angelo and Julia also getting stronger. One day Angelo couldn t stop himself and asked to Julia Can I ask you something 9

The Don of Darbhanga Julia didn t sense it and answered Please tell Angelo after thinking for while spoke Don t you think...fear of moving forward is too immense, so we don t able to tell, it is clear that we like each other Julia didn t said anything and just looked into the eyes of Angelo. After some time Angelo said How long we will keep avoiding our love for each other Julia answered Till the right time will not come Angelo spoke without any hesitance If we will delay our confession of love, then we are running from the truth, and it s not moral Julia said Do you think Love is right thing to do Angelo answered Even some call about love that it is a changeable and strange feeling that arises like an sickness, nevertheless it has its own logics, like all the things Julia spoke If you think its correct, then talk to my father as I am not going to tell him anything from my side Angelo boldly said Whatever you wish, tomorrow I will talk to you dad for our marriage Julia smiled and moved away. The next day Angelo talked to Andre about his proposal of marriage to Andre s daughter and after some thinking, Andre said yes and in coming week Angelo got married to his love Julia inside nearby Church perhaps that church was built in early 1600s century. Their marriage 10
