From the Editor Greetings to you in the name of Jesus! Easter celebrates the victory of Jesus over the power of death and evil.easter presents God, through Jesus on the Cross, as experiencing human suffering at its most imaginably intense. Jesus resurrection is the beginning of God s new project not to snatch people away from heaven but to colonize earth with the life of heaven, quotes N. T. Wright.Easter gives us the message of freedom, life, hope, new direction, transformation and intimacy with God. If Jesus would have died on the cross, hope for the humankind would remain as a mere idea. Jesus never had seen resurrection as a way to escape death, but it was the way through which he conquered the powers of death. That mighty act of Jesus had opened the way for the mortals to receive the bliss of heaven and redemption. The resurrection of Jesus marks a new life for all those who live in him. Each Easter reminds of God s unconditional love towards this world and it helps us in experiencing a God who remains at our side and accepts us as we are and accompanies us no matter what or no matter where. When Mary Magdelene and the other Mary went to see the tomb, a great earth quake had occurred as an angel of the Lord came down and rolled back the stone and sat on it. The guards who were there became like dead. The angel of the Lord said to the woman Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. The angel added Then go quickly and tell his disciples, He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him. As these women ran to the disciples to share this good news, Jesus meets them and offers his greetings and he said Do not be afraid, go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me (Matthew 28:1-11). Easter comforts us when unexpected turns happen in life, the message of Do not be afraid. And, Easter continuously reminds us of our responsibility to tell those who are around us, the most powerful statement of Christian faith, Christ has been raised from the dead. Easter holds the message and life of a Christ who is not dead, but lives in and through us. Easter is not limited to the passion and death of Christ; it also includes the dismal tragedy of life unlived by the many, and all the loss of passion and truth that does with it. OH, WHAT A CONSECRATION! D.L. Nesaraj Frances Ridley Havergal, known as the Consecration Poet had only a short life of 43 years. Yet she is fondly remembered even today for her contribution of the great consecration hymn Take My Life, and other hymns like I Gave My Life for Thee. Though she started reading and memorizing the Bible at the age of four, it was only during her early adolescence that she had the vital conversion experience that changed her outlook. Of this experience, she later wrote: There and then I committed my soul to the Saviour and earth and heaven seemed bright from that moment. With the inborn talent inherited from her father William Havergal, who was an Anglican clergyman involved in improving and composing hymns, she also equipped herself with thorough training in linguistics and music. Having dedicated her life to Jesus in her teen age, she always hungered for more deeper consecration. Take My Life (1874) was the result of this zest. To understand the context of this hymn, we shall look at her own words: I went for a little visit of five days. There were 10 persons in the house; some where unconverted and long prayed for, some converted but not rejoicing Christians. He gave me the prayer, Lord, give me all in this house. And He just did. Before I left the house, everyone had got a blessing. The last night of my visit I was too happy to sleep and passed most of the night in renewal of my consecration and these little couplets formed themselves and chimed in my heart one after another till they finished with ever only, ALL FOR THEE. The hymn, which the Holy Spirit poured out through Miss.Havergal while in prayer, renewing her consecration, expresses a complete surrender to the Lord. Even today after about one and a half century as we sing this dedication hymn, it lifts up our souls to a joyous mood of complete surrender of all that we are.the poet specially consecrates10 things namely, her days, hands, feet, voice, lips, silver and gold, intellect, will, heart, love and finally her whole self. We don t have any right on our days because we were already dead (in sin). A dead man doesn t have any more days. But now, since we are made alive in Jesus and it is He who is living in us, our days belong to Him only. The old covenant gave 6 days for us and demanded one day for God, to be observed as Sabbath by being in close communion with God. But Jesus, who fulfilled the law, taught us to be holy and to dwell in Him always. So, all the 7 days of the week are like Sabbath to us. We are to be in close communion with Him all the 7 days, 24 hours, leaving aside our self-interests and doing His will only. This is the way to consecrate our days. Our hands are to be used to help others out of agape (Godly love). Like the excellent wife mentioned in Prov. 31:20, let us use our hands to feed the hungry, to wipe the tears of the grieved and to give a hand-shake of love and peace to all we meet. Let us not use them to hurt others or to do shameful and sorrowful deeds. Our feet should carry the good news to wherever possible. Let our feet take us to areas of darkness, strife, famine, sickness, injustice and illiteracy, so that they would become the beautiful feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace as Isaiah says in52:7.let them carry us in paths of righteousness (Psalm 23:3) and not to places of vulgarity, immorality and conspiracy or other dirty business. Our voice should swell the praises of our King and shout to all the world the good news of salvation. Isaiah prophesies to Zion: O Jerusalem, lift up your voice with strength, lift it up, be not afraid; say to the cities of Judah, Behold your God. It has to be mentioned here that Miss. Havergal possessed an unusually pleasant voice and was trained as a concert soloist. As a brilliant pianist, coupled with a vibrant personality, she had all the possibilities for much worldly acclaim. But she was determined that her life s mission was to sing and work only for Jesus. Would we be inspired by the way she consecrated her voice? Our lips have been granted by God to speak graciously with words seasoned with salt (Col.4:6), for pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones (Prov.16:24). When Jesus first spoke in the synagogue, the people marvelled at the gracious words that proceeded out of His mouth (Luke 4:22). Frances Havergal wanted her lips to be filled with messages for Jesus. We are also bound to thank God continuously, offering the fruit of our lips (Heb.13:15). Shall we consecrate our lips for our Saviour? Our silver and gold include our money and earthly possessions. Because Jesus has purchased us with His precious blood, He is the owner of everything we have. We do not have the right to spend any of our earthly possessions as per our wish. The Mosaic law taught to offer a tenth of our income to God because it belonged to Him. But under the new covenant, we fully belong to Jesus and our wealth belongs to Him 100%. We require God s approval to spend even a single paise.the hymn writer gladly gave all her silver and gold for missionary work. See what she wrote to her friend regarding this: The Lord has shown me another little step and of course, I have taken it with extreme delight. Take my silver and my gold now means shipping off all my ornaments to the church Missionary House, including a jewel cabinet that is really fit for a countess, where all will be accepted and disposed of for me Nearly fifty articles are being packed up. I don t think I ever packed a box with such pleasure. Our intellect and our various faculties are to be used for spreading the Gospel and winning souls for our Saviour.When we surrender them, He can use them in wonderful ways. Our will becomes irrelevant when Jesus becomes our Lord. The life of a Christian is controlled by God s will. He will not be having any future plans of his own, because it is God who plans for him and He normally shows His children only the next one step. However,when we 22 N v thmbnkv G{]n 2018
surrender our will to His will, we will have a meaningful life, useful for God. Our heart reveals our real nature. Prov.27:19 says: As in water face reveals face, so a man s heart reveals the man. So, consecrating our hearts means consecrating our whole self. Jesus said: For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matt.6:21). Those who surrender their hearts to Jesus will no more be storing up worldly treasures; they will be amassing riches in heaven! Let us, then, oust our self from our hearts and enthrone Christ as King in our hearts. Our love is entirely due to God. Jesus taught us that the first and great commandment is: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind (Matt.22:37). If we love God in this manner, we won t be able to love the world and its attractions because it is now under the control of Satan the deceiver, who took possession of it by deceiving the first man. Apostle Paul wants us, Christians to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship (Rom.12:1 ESV). He also wants us to glorify God in your body (1Cor.6:20). Christ has purchased us paying an enormous price; His own precious, sinless life. And, He expects that which He purchased, to be entirely His. Then, as we sing this hymn each time, ( 208)let us re-dedicate our entire self and be, as the poet says, ever only, ALL FOR THEE.
