F I R S T U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H WORSHIP Second Sunday of Advent December 10, 2017 See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight, Mark 1:2b-3 WELCOME WE GATHER Rev. Robert English PRELUDE Sleepers Wake! (J. S. Bach) Ty Woodward, Organ *PROCESSIONAL HYMN #209 United Methodist Hymnal Blessed Be the God of Israel *CALL TO WORSHIP Anne Premer, Lay Lector The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill my promise to my people. Justice and righteousness will fill the land and all will live in peace and safety. Let us prepare the way of the Lord! Come, O come, Emmanuel. *CHORAL ACT OF PRAISE Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. *SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST Please greet those worshipping near you. CHILDREN S MESSAGE Tricia Guerrero #191 UMH Jesus Loves Me (verse 1) Jesus loves me! This I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong; they are weak, but he is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so. As the congregation sings, all children are invited to come forward. As a courtesy to others, please silence all cell phones/sound-making devices. * Asterisks indicate standing if you are able.

LIGHTING THE ADVENT CANDLES Dan, Charmaine, Cooper and Bailey Nessel Congregation joins in the prayer after lighting: O God, rejoicing, we remember the promise of your Son. As this candle is lit, may the blessing of Christ come upon us, brightening our way and guiding us by his truth. May Christ our Savior bring light into the darkness of our world, and to us, as we wait for his coming. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. #217 UMH Away in a Manger (verse 3) Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay close by me forever, and love me, I pray; bless all the dear children in thy tender care, and fit us for heaven to live with thee there. As the congregation sings, the children may go to their Sunday School classes. OUR MISSION & COMMON LIFE We thank God for these opportunities for fellowship, for worship, and for service. Thanks be to God! WE HEAR GOD S WORD Rev. English THE PSALM Psalm 85 Anne Premer Lord, you were favorable to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob. You forgave the iniquity of your people; you pardoned all their sin. Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss. Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts. Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss. Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky. The Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness will go before him, and will make a path for his steps. Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss. THE GOSPEL Mark 8:1-8 (Pew Bible page 43, N.T.) Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God! SERMON God So Loves the World: Prepare the Way Rev. Patricia Farris WE RESPOND INVITATION TO PRAYER #242 UMH Love Came Down at Christmas (verse 1 repeat between spoken prayers) Love came down at Christmas, Love all lovely, Love divine; Love was born at Christmas; star and angels gave the sign. LISTENING FOR THE VOICE OF GOD Rev. English

SILENT PRAYER & PASTORAL PRAYER THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. CHORAL RESPONSE WE OFFER OUR GIFTS & OURSELVES Your generous gifts support the ministries and outreach of the church. You may place gifts of cash or checks made out to First UMC in the offering plates as they are passed. You may also place your Let s Connect/Let Us Pray card in the offering plate. Give online at any time at www.santamonicaumc.org. Credit cards are now accepted at the Sunday Hospitality Table during Coffee Fellowship. Thank you. May God grow in us generous and joyful hearts. THE OFFERTORY The Chancel Choir/Dr. James Smith, Music Director Who But The Lord? (Craig Courtney) O come, Thou bright and morning star and bring us comfort from afar. Dispel the shadows of the night and turn our darkness into light. Who but the Lord can give the shadows light, can break into the dark, draw morning from the night? Who but the Lord will hear our cry and answer, Here am I? Who but the Lord makes blinded eyes to see, brings music to the deaf, sets the lonely captive free? Who but the Lord will by his glory show the paths of peace? Who but the Lord? O shine on us the brightness of Your face, to earth s remotest end, ev ry people, ev ry race. O shine on us until to each is shown Your saving grace. Who but the Lord can give the shadows light? None but the Lord. *RESPONSE #94 UMH The Doxology *UNISON PRAYER OF DEDICATION Tricia Guerrero Good and gracious God, we give you thanks that you have made incarnate in your world your very self in Christ Jesus. He is the fullness of life and the life of love. In faith and hope, we offer our gifts of money and self, that as his followers, we may be the face of your love on earth. Restore us this day. Fill us with love. We pray with grateful hearts, Amen. *HYMN #202 UMH People, Look East *BENEDICTION *BENEDICTION RESPONSE WE GO FORTH TO SERVE POSTLUDE Trumpet Tune in D (David N. OPEN INVITATIONS MISSION OPPORTUNITIES Walk the Labyrinth Houston Mission Work Team This church community has felt called to respond in many ways after the devastation in Houston from Hurricane Harvey. Beginning with prayer that then led into the prayerful actions of collecting items for hygiene kits, and even raising money for UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief. We have responded over and over to the call for help and will continue to do so this Spring. A work team will be sent to Houston in April to put our faith into action! If you are interested or would like to learn more, email Team Leader, Tricia Guerrero: t.guerrero@santamonicaumc.org or call the church office. Visit the website: www.santamonicaumc.org/disaster-response. For more mission opportunities, go to: www.santamonicaumc.org/outreach-missions. The Labyrinth laid in the Simkins Hall floor of First UMC Santa Monica is a replica of the Chartres Labyrinth laid in the cathedral around 1220 CE. Walking the Labyrinth is an ancient spiritual practice, a way to quiet our minds and open our spirits to the presence of the Holy. Every step a prayer. The First UMC Labyrinth is open one Sunday a month, and also available for individuals, groups and retreats by appointment. Call the church office to schedule: (310) 393-8258. Walk the Labyrinth: Sunday, December 17, 2:30 p.m. in Simkins Hall. Altar Guild The Altar Guild is a group of volunteers who prepare the Sanctuary for worship each week. If you are interested in volunteering for this ministry (you can volunteer for one Sunday a month), please call the church office: 310.393.8258. There are many opportunities available at First UMC for spiritual growth, fellowship and community. To view more, go to:www.santamonicaumc.org. LOOKING FORWARD Christmas eve services: December 24-10 a.m. Sunday Worship of Lessons and Carols December 24-4 p.m. Christmas Eve No Fuss, No Muss Family Worship December 24-11 p.m. Christmas Eve Candlelight Service FOCUS ON December 10, 2017 HISTORY OF UMCOR The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the humanitarian relief and development arm of The United Methodist Church (UMC), a non-profit 501(c)3 organization operated under the auspices of the General Board of Global Ministries. Under its original name, The Methodist Committee on Overseas Relief (MCOR) was founded in 1940 by the Bishop Herbert Welsh, in response to displaced and vulnerable populations in the wake of World War II. In his address at the General Conference that year, Bishop Welsh stated that MCOR would serve as a voice of conscience among Methodists to act in the relief of human suffering without distinction of race, color, or creed. This mandate remains true to this day. The organization s name was legally changed to The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) at the 1972 General Conference. UMCOR s Vision and Mission are as follows: Vision: As the humanitarian relief and development arm of The United Methodist Church, UMCOR strengthens and transforms people and communities. Mission: Compelled by Christ to be a voice of conscience on behalf of the people called Methodist, UMCOR works globally to alleviate human suffering and advance hope and healing. UMCOR s work can be categorized into three major areas: 1) Humanitarian Relief/Disaster Response 2) Sustainable Development 3) Global Health (in collaboration with Global Ministries) First UMC has worked with UMCOR throughout the years. We receive thousands of dollars each year designated towards UMCOR, 100% of which is sent directly to UMCOR to aid in the disasters. Ways To Support UMCOR through First UMC: When giving directly to UMCOR, you may credit First UMC of Santa Monica by selecting our state and church name on their website: www.umcor.org. Online giving via the church website: www.santamonicaumc.org/umcor, and select the UMCOR fund.
