St. Brendan Catholic Church Saint Brendan Mission Statement We come together as the Church of St. Brendan to hear the story that God loves us with a love that surpasses all understanding; to break the bread of the Eucharist, so that we might be broken as Bread in service to others; that through our belief in Jesus we may joyfully go forth knowing that our lives have purpose and that we will live forever. We are called to be Christ in the world through our words and actions. Saint Paul teaches us that we are called to be parts of Christ s body. Individually we are many parts, but together we are one. As we begin to observe Catholic Schools Week today, let Paul s words provide a valuable lesson for us to learn The episode from Nehemiah we hear today occurs soon after Ezra led a contingent of the chosen People back to Jerusalem after the Exile. This may have been the first time that they had heard the word of God preached aloud publicly. Understandably, they became quite emotional. It is easy for most of us to take for granted our ability to gather and listen to God s word. But imagine if you lived in a time and place where you were not allowed this communal experience. We rejoice in the freedom we have to worship together. The people in the synagogue in Nazareth that day had a novel experience as well. They definitely had never heard anyone say, Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing. But Jesus is the manifestation of the one prophesied by Isaiah. Jesus was filled with the Spirit, chosen by God, called to bring glad tidings to the poor, and so on. Now consider this: we know that when we gather in His name, Jesus is present. Therefore, this scripture passage is fulfilled right now in our hearing, and every time we gather for the Eucharist. Luke writes that Jesus taught in the synagogues of Galilee and was widely praised. In fact, throughout Luke s Gospel, Jesus is often addressed as Teacher. It is a title of respect and a recognition of His authority. It also implies that people were learning from Him. Teachers in Catholic Schools have a wonderful model in Jesus. They are called to nurture and care for the children they teach as well as educate them. The Catholic school is a place to learn, but it is also a place to grow as a Christian. QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Am I conscious of Jesus presence in our midst? How do I show others that I am part of the Body of Christ? (Permission granted-world Library Publications 2018) SAVE THE DATE One Blood - Blood Drive Sunday, March 3rd
