THE FIRST EPISTLE OF PETER TO THE CHURCH OF THE DISPERSION THROUGHOUT THE WORLD 1 PETER CHAPTER 1:14-16 MEDIA REFERENCE NUMBER SM-951 JUNE 17, 2018 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: All In The Family The Ministry of The Grace of God Toward All Those Who Are Anchored in Christ. SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Grace, Holiness, Waiting, Sanctification, Maturity Introduction to the Text: 1 Peter 1:14-16 1 Peter 1:14-16 As obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be (as) holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, Be holy, for (as) I am holy. Last Time it was Exhortation (#1) Christian, Set your hope fully upon God because He is coming Back for you and with His coming He is bringing with Him the totality of His grace. 1 Peter 1:13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully (1) upon the grace that is (2) to be brought to you (3) at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As of this moment today. Here and now Your redemption is nearly complete. Don t misunderstand me! If you have placed your hope fully upon Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. If you believe that He and He alone is the redeemer that he is the resurrected Christ according to the Scriptures - - then you have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb. 1

But soon, there awaits one final act of our full redemption and that is the transformation or the translation of our human bodies into eternity 1 Corinthians 15:50-57 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory? 56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18 NLT We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. 17 Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. 18 So encourage each other with these words. In light of His Appearing It is required of us to be ready. And that getting ready or being ready get ready is found in the Exhortation (#2) Be holy because God the Holy Spirit is Holy in you. :14 As obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, Be holy, for I am holy. All In The Family 1.) All in the family are children vs. 14 1 Peter 1:14 As obedient children, 2

as obedient children this immediately takes us back just a few verses to a profound reality 1 Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of God the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of God the Son (Jesus Christ): Obedient, GRK: implies the act of following a leader. To go along with Children, GRK: not immature, but loved. In a family as one together. Children inherit their nature from their parents. There is an inheritance that is genetic and there s an inheritance that is learned :14 not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; Not Conforming, GRK: resisting the temptation to be molded back into the shape, character, image you once were. Former Lusts, GRK: the old impulses and passions that once ordered us around. The demands of the flesh. Ignorance, GRK: having no knowledge that here was a way out. To be in bondage or caged unaware. So now we are children (His children) We re no longer under the control of this world s influences. We ve been set free from the shame of our past-life. We were once ignorant of God and what He wants of me. 2 Peter 1:4b You may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. Matthew 7:20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them. 3

Kids automatically pick up on good & bad ideas. It s part of our fallen nature. We need wise, godly, loving parents to direct our lives. Mom, Dad early on teach your child about his or her reality. tell your son that he is a boy and no he cannot BBQ the cat. Tell your daughter that she is a little girl and that she s the most valuable thing in the world. Proverbs 22:6 Train up (to set in place or to put on the mark) a child in the way (the age old path. the well worn way, the proper road) he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. This is exactly what God does with His children. He sets us in a new place. He puts us on the mark. He keeps us on the narrow, well-worn path, the proper road. Matthew 7:13-14 Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. John 10:7-9 Then Jesus said to them again, Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, All In The Family 2.) All in the family are different vs. 15 1 Peter 1:15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be (as) holy in all your conduct, Holy, GRK: hagios; to be set out from and apart from all others. To be dedicated or appointed or to exist altogether differently. 4

No one and no thing is like this by origin but God Himself the I AM. but as He who called you is holy, Leviticus 11:44 For I am the Lord your God. You shall therefore consecrate yourselves, and you shall be holy; for (because) I am holy. Leviticus 19:2 Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. Leviticus 20:7-8 Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am the Lord your God. 8 And you shall keep My statutes, and perform them: I am the Lord who sanctifies you. Leviticus 20:26 And you shall be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy, and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be Mine. Called, GRK: kaleo; invited as an invited guest. Welcomed into or summonsed to a gathering (+). never forced or coerced. Mark 1:17-18 Then Jesus said to them, Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men. 18 They immediately left their nets and followed Him. By the way - - there is no uncalled in the Scriptures. there is no uninvited in the Bible. Conduct, GRK: anastrophe, behavior, actions, lifestyle. The way you live your life reveals your (G)god. Peter is calling the church to look back to the days of the Leviticus Priesthood and its practices. The man would become a priest by God s prescription. Put on this. Put on that. Do this and that. - - and God would accept him as a Priest. 5

But none of those things made the man holy on the inside. He looked holy on the outside. He looked priestly on the outside. We are His priest now in Christ. We are to be set apart from the common sinner because we no longer desire to live like we once did. We are now clothed with the mind of Christ. 1 Peter 1:18-20 Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. 20 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you Gifts given to the LORD were to be declared holy unto God by the giver. Can I give you an Investment tip? If you give to God, that s good. But if you give all of you to God that s great. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 But this I say: He who sows (himself) sparingly will also reap (himself) sparingly, and he who sows (himself) bountifully will also reap (himself) bountifully. 7 So let each one (himself) give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. Are you All In The Family? Because we are of a new family under the loving authority of a new father, we now have a new way of living. Ephesians 2:1-4a Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. 2 You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil the commander of the powers in the unseen world.a He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. 3 All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God s anger, just like everyone else. :4a But God 6

Life Without Jesus Ignorant of God s word and will Fatherless and Orphaned Controlled by passions Life without meaning & purpose Affirmed by society Life With Jesus Knowing Christ and God A Child of God and Family Controlled by obedience Life with meaning & purpose Misunderstood by society All In The Family 3.) All in the family are adopted vs. 16 1 Peter 1:16 Because it is written, Be holy, for (as) I am holy. This portion of verse 16 is the great liberator for us here. When He says here to Be Holy {FOR} I am Holy is God saying; Because I m Holy, and I have made you mine - - you also are now holy. you also are Holy because I have adopted you out of the world and I have made you my very own. Who I am is now officially and inseparable who you are!: 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 2 Corinthians 6:17-18 Therefore Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you. 18 I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the Lord Almighty. Romans 8:14-16 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 7

All In The Family 4.) All in the family are united vs. 16 1 Peter 1:16 Because it is written, Be holy, for (as) I am holy. We Have a New Nature; Your nature determines your appetite and your appetite feeds your desire and that gives power to your actions. Your physical activities and action prove, reveals who and what you really are in this world. 2 Corinthians 5:8-10 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. :9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Ephesians 5:1-2 Therefore be (all Christians) imitators (mimetes to mime or to shadow) of God as dear children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. Whatever you hear, ask yourself, does this please God? Whatever you touch, ask yourself, does this please God? Whatever you see, ask yourself, does this please God? Whatever you think, ask yourself, does this please God? At the moment you became a Christian, a Christ- Follower you were given a new nature by God Himself by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed (marked, stamped, tagged, identified) for the day of redemption. 8

Our Unifying Vision & Prayer Ephesians 4:11-16 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head - - Christ 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
