The Lamplighter Lighting the way so others will see Jesus A Publication of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church Church Office: 423-282-6722 Fax: 423-282-6200 E-mail: Wesley@wesleymemorialumc.org Website: www.wesleymemorialumc.org Facebook page: www.facebook.com/wesleymemorialumcjohnsoncity From the Pastor JUly 2017 If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us. If you can? said Jesus. Everything is possible for one who believes. Immediately the boy s father exclaimed, I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief! (Mark 9:22-24). This passage has always been one of my favorite stories about Jesus from the Gospels. I think it is easy for all of us to identify with this man. No matter how much faith that each of us might have, I believe that we all deal with doubt as well. This passage reminds us that Christ can meet us even when we are experiencing doubt in our lives. I am so proud of all the people in our church who continue to seek Christ even in the midst of doubt. It is so easy to slip into a mode of living in which we just go through the motions of all the things that we do in our lives- work, caring for children, caring for parents, maintaining a home, enjoying recreation etc. In the last month, many in our church have taken new steps to belong to a Sunday School class or Life Group. We have had nearly 35 persons join one of our new Sunday School classes or Life-Groups on Sunday mornings during our new Discipleship time (9:45-10:50). These are places where our faith can intersect with our lives in significant ways. They are places where relationships are built that strengthen us for life's journey. We all experience doubt in our lives that expresses itself in different ways. Despite our doubt, God continues to believe in us. I believe that fact is the motivation that we need to give our best for God! God bless, Gerald

We are excited to welcome Ally Blackmon, who has been hired as Children s Ministry Assistant. If you haven t already, please introduce yourself to her. She will be a huge asset to our busy Sunday mornings. Your children have welcomed her warmly. We have had the pleasure of working with Danielle Stevens this summer. Danielle is one of Wesley s preschool teachers who has helped on the children s hall during our time of transition and vacationing volunteers. Thank you to all who supported our Maker Fun Factory VBS. We had enough funds, food and supplies to minister to about 60 children. Thank you to the volunteers who prepped, designed, set-up and those who shared time, knowledge and talents with the children. VBS was meaningful, exciting and full of laughter because you cared. We are called to share God s word. We could not do this without the help of the many hands that touched this ministry. Thank you, Wesley Memorial! ~Christa Wagstaff Director of Children s Ministry Outdoor Family Movie Night July 21 st at 8:00 pm. For children of all ages to enjoy. Free popcorn and drinks.
