So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father swho is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for LAFAYETTE ORINDA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is Living the Good Life in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot Practical serve God and wealth. Guidance Therefore I tell you, do from not worry Jesus about your life, in what you will Sermon eat or what you will on drink, the or about Mount your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, What will we eat? or What will we drink? or What will we wear? For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Todays trouble is enough for today. Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgement you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck in your neighbours eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbour, Let me take the speck. Lowell Mason, 1839; Text 1990 Medical Mission Sisters O for a world where everyone respects each other s ways Where love is lived and all is done with justice and with praise O for a world where goods are shared and misery relieved Where truth is spoken, children spared, equality achieved We welcome one world family and struggle with each choice That opens us to unity and gives our vision voice The poor are rich; the weak are strong; the foolish ones are wise Tell all who mourn: outcast belong, who perishes will rise O for a world preparing for God s glorious reign of peace Where time and tears will be no more, and all but love will cease Response: Hallelujah Words & Music: Leonard Cohen Hallelujah Reading: A Prayer for the World Written by Rabbi Harold Kushner, 2003 Let the rain come and wash away the ancient grudges, the bitter hatreds held and nurtured over generations. Let the rain wash away the memory of the hurt, the neglect. Then let the sun come out and fill the sky with rainbows. Let the warmth of the sun heal us wherever we are broken. Let it burn away the fog so that we can see each other clearly. So that we can see beyond labels, beyond accents, gender or skin color. Let the warmth and brightness of the sun melt our selfishness. So that we can share the joys and feel the sorrows of our neighbors. And let the light of the sun be so strong that we will see all people as our neighbors. Let the earth, nourished by rain, bring forth flowers to surround us with beauty. And let the mountains teach our hearts to reach upward to heaven. Amen

Anthem: Canticle of Hope Text: Based on Isaiah 25, J. Paul Williams; Music: Joseph M. Martin Lord, you are God, perfect in holiness Lord, you are God of the needy and the poor A sure defender You are our refuge You are the Giver You are Jehovah Lord, you are God, reigning in righteousness Lord, you are God in the time of our distress We call on you, our sure salvation Lord, you are faithful Lord, you are God, ruling in gentleness Lord, you are God. You wipe away each tear You hear our every prayer You give us comfort You touch our hearts and calm our fears You are eternal Alpha, Omega. We place our hope in you alone Lord, you are God, perfect in holiness Lord, you are God. In our darkness You are everlasting light A sure defender You are our refuge You are the Giver You are Jehovah Great is Thy Faithfulness Your love restores Sermon: Living Above The Scripture (Matthew 5:38 48) and other quotes You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.

You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:38 48) Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good (Romans 12:9) so that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine like stars in the world. (Philippians 2:15) That within the best of us, there is some evil, and within the worst of us, there is some good. When we come to see this, we take a different attitude toward individuals. The person who hates you most has some good in him; even the nation that hates you most has some good in it; even the race that hates you most has some good in it. And when you come to the point that you look in the face of every man and see deep down within him what religion calls the image of God, you begin to love him in spite of. No matter what he does, you see God s image there. There is an element of goodness that he can never slough off. Discover the element of good in your enemy. And as you seek to hate him, find the center of goodness and place your attention there and you will take a new attitude. (Martin Luther King, Jr.) Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. (Matthew 5:11 12) No, if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:20 21) Response: Overcome Evil with Love Words & Music: Debbie Shaeffer, Arranged by Brett Strader There s a name for each face In those pictures that I see In those stories haunting me I could look the other way But then who would I become? I must see them one by one Do not be overcome by the troubles of this world He has overcome them all Do not be overcome by the injustice all around But overcome evil with love Overcome evil with love For one day I will stand

On the other side of time Where it comes to light That I m welcomed by the King on High Who lived here among the poor O could I ever ignore Him? And whatever you ve done Unto the least of these You ve done unto the King And whatever you ve said To tell yourself that there s too much That you don t mean anything It isn t true The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever Amen. Closing Song: Mourning Into Dancing Words & Music: Tommy Walker Refrain : You ve turned my mourning into dancing again You ve lifted my sorrows And I can t stay silent I must sing for Your joy has come Where there once was only hurt You gave Your healing hand Where there once was only pain You brought comfort like a friend I feel the sweetness of Your love Piercing my darkness I see the bright and morning sun As it ushers in Your joyful gladness Your anger lasts For a moment in time But Your favor is here And will be on me for all my lifetime Refrain Refrain 2x
