BRIGHT STAR COMMUNITY CHURCH What are you worried about! Matthew 6:25 (NIV) 25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?

I AM FREE

*The English word worry comes from the old Germen word wurgen and it means to strangle or to choke. *The Greek word used for worry is the word MERIMNAO (me-rēm-nä'-ō) which literally means to be anxious, to be troubled with cares, to be distracted, to divide, to rip or tear apart "to be drawn in different directions". Worry pulls us apart. It is trying to live in a place you are not

The day and age that we live in has been called the Age of Anxiety. People are smiling less, they are more apprehensive, there is less trust and more alienation, and more and more people are being diagnosed with nervous breakdowns, high blood pressure, heart diseases, and ulcers. It is a proven medical fact that the cause of all of these diagnoses can be traced back to anxiety and worry.

Matthew 6:25 34 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? 28 "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.

29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, `What shall we eat?' or `What shall we drink?' or `What shall we wear?' 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own

1. Worry Is Needless There are more important things in life than food and clothing. V. 25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?

2. Worry Is Senseless Nature and the nature of God shows us it is unnecessary V. 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

3. Worry Is Useless (vs. 27) It accomplishes no purpose V. 27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? V. 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? NIV

As a matter of fact it has the complete opposite effect. If you are worried about getting sick, worry suppresses the immune system and makes it more likely that you will get sick. If you are worried about losing your job, worry actually causes you to not perform at your top level. If you are worried about gaining weight you will probably eat more, Proverbs 12:25says, An anxious heart weighs a man down.

According to WEBMD.com, Chronic worrying affects your daily life so much that it interferes with your appetite, lifestyle habits, relationships, sleep, and job performance. Many people who worry excessively are so anxiety-ridden that they seek relief in harmful lifestyle habits such as overeating, eating junk food, cigarette smoking, or using alcohol and drugs.

The physical symptoms of excessive worrying are, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, dry mouth, fast heartbeat, fatigue, headaches, inability to concentrate, irritability, muscle aches, nausea, nervous energy, rapid breathing, shortness of breath, sweating, trembling, and twitching.

The more serious consequences of being worried are: suppression of the immune system, digestive disorders, muscle tension, short-term memory loss, premature coronary artery disease and heart attack

Worry is kind of like a rocking chair. It is something you can do, but it never gets you anywhere. Worry accomplishes nothing. In fact it only acts to make things worse in your life.

4. Worry Is Faithless (vs. 28-32) It shows lack of faith in your Father V. 28, 29, 30 28 "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

Believe That God can supply! God does not ignore those who depend on him! He will Show Up!

V. 31, 32 31 So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. So let us not worry about what God has already taken care of. Worry shows a lack of faith and understanding of God.

Worry is not just silly but also sinful. Worry shows that we are not trusting God as our provider. If you say that you trust someone but then by your actions show that you do not then you are not trusting. It represents what unbelievers do and shows that we do not trust God. Someone once said "If we worry, we can't trust; if we trust, we can't worry." God is faithful in providing for His children.

V. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. There are real challenges God wants us to pursue and worrying keeps us from them. He wants us to pursue Him and His Kingdom, His Righteousness, Keep Him First in our lives Do your part and trust God to do his In verse 33 Jesus tells us how we ought to respond to crisis and how God will in turn respond to us. Read Matthew 6:33 with me

V. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Living one day at a time keeps us from being consumed with worry.

Phil 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. It says to give your worry to God and fill your heart with thankfulness.

Don't worry; It is Needless, It is Senseless, It is Useless and It is Faithless Make the things that matter most to God, the things that matter most to you. When you do, God will look after everything else for you!

- Align your priorities with God s priorities - Never forget you are more important to God than anything else in the world - If you seek God s interests first, he is bound to deliver for you and wouldn t have it any other way.
