BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE The descendants of William Kenner (1774-1824), New Orleans businessman, planter, and politician, and Mary Minor Kenner of Natchez (1778-1814), daughter of Stephen Minor, the last Spanish governor of the region, lived on Oakland Plantation, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, and on Roseland Plantation, St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, both sugar and rice plantations. Their surviving children included Martha Oxley (1804-1873), Frances Ann (1806-1875), Stephen Minor (1808-1862), William Butler (1810-1853), George (1812-1852), and Duncan Farrar (1813-1887). Martha married Charles Oxley, and they resided at Roseland Plantation. William Butler Kenner of Oakland Plantation married Rumaha A. Riske (1832-1885). Their children included Philip Minor Kenner (1833-circa 1890), Josephine, Charlotte Lottie K. Harding, Butler, Mary Minor, Sarah Belle, and Fredrick Butler Kenner. Philip Kenner served as a lieutenant during the Civil War; he married Ella Humphreys. The Jefferson Parish city of Kenner is sited on the family s lands. SCOPE AND CONTENT Papers and volumes pertaining to the William B. Kenner family consist of personal correspondence (1844-1892), diaries (1847-1856), and two memorandum books (1844-1848, 1853). Plantation diaries and correspondence of Charles Oxley and Martha Kenner Oxley, record activities at Roseland Plantation, St. Charles Parish. Included are letters from William Kenner's grandson, Lieutenant Philip Minor Kenner of Oakland Plantation, Jefferson Parish, from Tupelo, Miss. and Marietta, Ga. during his service in the Confederate States Army and various other family letters pertaining to the plantations, financial matters, or the lives of family members. SERIES DESCRIPTION Series I. Correspondence and records, 1846-1869, undated The majority of the family papers consists of correspondence between family members and friends, while some is made up of financial records. These records include receipts for shoes (1860), letters to Charles Oxley discussing payments and debts (1848, 1852), and a letter to Mrs. Charles Oxley concerning the accounts at Roseland Plantation (1856). Other letters are those sent from Philip Minor Kenner during his service in the Confederate Army, one from Tupelo, Miss., to his cousin (1862), another from Marietta, Ga., to his sister which mentions the death of General Polk (1864). His military record and a leave of absence order (1865) are also included. Many letters to Philip from his mother make up the collection, in which she discusses family members, financial issues, and the decision of whether to sell Oakland Plantation (1867, 1868, 1870). Other family correspondence includes a letter to Philip from his sister Lottie K. Harding (1871), a letter from his nephew Butler Kenner Harding announcing his engagement (1888), a letter to Philip sending condolences for the death of his brother Fred (1889), and a letter from his brother-in-law George Harding discussing the condition and financial situation of the plantations (1892). Many letters discussing family members and general daily events are written by Heloise to Philip, Ella (Philip s wife), and Martha (Philip s daughter), some from New Orleans, others from Baltimore. These describe such things as Christmas presents for Martha (1880), Mardi Gras (1884), her job in Baltimore (1889), and send condolences for the death of Lottie (1890). Also included in this collection is a photograph of an unknown man published by E. Anthony, New York (undated) and various envelopes addressed to Philip M. Kenner and to Ella Humphreys (1855, 1869, undated). Series II. Manuscript volumes, 1844-1856 Manuscript volumes include five diaries of Charles Oxley from Roseland Plantation (1847, 1848, 1850, 1851, 1853) and a sixth written by an unknown person (1856). All diaries describe supplies, crops, labor, and finances on the plantation. Two memorandum books are also included which contain account figures and notes on similar topics (1844-1848, 1853).
