Connecting people to God with the message of God s love! Covenant Covenant Lutheran Church VOLUME 21, ISSUE #9 September 2017 This coming year, Bishop Gonia's term comes to an end - at least, his first term. He is currently in discernment about his calling to serve a further 6 year term. His predecessor (Alan Bjornberg) served for three terms before retirement, so there is some room. If Bishop Gonia chooses to return to Parish ministry, we will have to have a serious conversation about the future direction of our synod - but even if he doesn't, and stands for reelection, we will still have to make some decisions. Within our Synod, we hold elections for bishop using what's called an Ecclesiastical Ballot. The first ballot is a nominating ballot, where a vote can be made for any ordained minister. Even me (please don't vote for me if you come to the assembly this year). If there is no winner (3/4 of the vote required to win), those voted for become the nominees. For the second ballot, to win requires a 3/4 majority, and from there, the number of nominees dwindles, and the amount of the vote required does as well. The third ballot is the top 7 nominees, and 2/3 of the vote, then 3 nominees and 60% of the vote. It is a slow, and contemplative process, full of prayer and discussion. Bishop Bjornberg was not always re-elected on the first ballot. No matter what Bishop Gonia discerns, we are at a place where we should discuss the goings-on of our synod and our church, and talk about what directions we think we need to be going. If you are interested in coming to the synod assembly in 2018, and being a larger part of these discussions, please come talk with me. Even if you are not feeling called to the synod assembly, your voice does matter on the governance of our synod, so I invite you to come and share your fears and hopes, your plans and desires with me before the election comes. Pastor Joshua

Motion was seconded by Woody Shore, motion passed President: No Report Elders: In an effort to make recruiting council members easier, there was some discussion on removing Elders from the Church Council, and have all remaining council members serve as Elders. This would reduce the Council from 13 members to 9. Serving as an elder would be voluntary for those council members who are not comfortable serving as elders. Since this would take a constitutional amendment, and need to be approved by the congregation at congregational meeting, discussion was tabled and will be put on the agenda at the 2018 Congregational Meeting under New Business. Trustees: Trustees reported that they have been blessed with rain. And while this makes watering easier, it has made fighting the weeds harder. They sent out a special thanks to Arleen Robbins and Nancy Lubeck for their hard work in the prayer garden. Pastor: For a complete Pastors report see the Pastors Report on the bulletin board. Pastor also reported that there will be another book fair in September. And he will be at a Theological conference September 21-23.
