Moving Beyond Our Comfort Zones Acts 8:1-25 Pastor Brian Kennedy, Sr. TEXT QUESTIONS TO PASTOR AS HE IS PREACHING TO: (909) 638-2696 Take it home point: God masterfully moves us beyond our comfort zones. A. The Stoning of Stephen Moved the Church Beyond Jerusalem (Acts 8:1-3). 1. Cruelty incited increasing violence (v. 1). 2. The stoning of Stephen scattered the church beyond Jerusalem (v. 1; cf. Acts 1:8). 3. The stoning of Stephen did not extinguish love among the saints (v. 2). 4. Saul (Paul) is introduced into the early church growth narrative (v. 3). a. Saul was a supportive bystander during the stoning of Stephen (Acts 7:58). b. Saul went on record as supporting Stephen s stoning (8:1). c. Saul led the intensified persecution of Christians after Stephen s death (8:3). B. Beyond Jerusalem, God Moved the Church to Racial Healing (Acts. 8:4-17). 1. Although scattered, the Christians spread the message about Jesus (v. 4). 2. The church moved according to the strategic direction of Jesus (v. 5; cf. Acts 1:8). 3. Philip (Acts 6:5), proclaimed Christ in Samaria, with huge results (vs. 5-13). a. Preaching Christ with the WOW factor, reaps huge results (vs. 5-8). i. God s power will draw people out of darkness (vs. 9-12). ii. Warning! God s power attracts people with impure motives (v. 13). 4. In His own time, God deals with heart issues (vs. 14-16). a. A glimpse of the Jew/Samaritan tension (John 4:7-9, 20; 8:48; Luke 9:52-54). b. Instead of destroying Samaritan s, John had to pray for, and lovingly touch the people he once asked about destroying (vs. 14-17). Note: The Word of God is a living and powerful two-edged sword that reveals God s love. Sharing God s message of love naturally flows from a changed-life driven by God s love. C. Simon s Behavior Moved the Church to Deal with Exploitation (Acts. 8:18-25). 1. The Apostles quickly dealt with Simon as he tried to exploit the church (vs. 18-19). a. Simon s offer was an attack on the church with money (v. 18 cf. 5:1-11). b. Discernment, wisdom, and boldness squashed the attack (vs. 20-23). c. Simons motive was not ministry, but exploiting people (v. 24; cf. vs. 9-11). 2. God blessed the church as He moved her beyond several comfort zones (v. 25). Note: John s changed life is put on display as he and Peter preached outside of their comfort zones, in Samaritan villages all the way home. Personal Challenge: Identify one zone of comfort, God wants to move you beyond. Use God s Word, God s love, God s discernment, God s wisdom, and God s boldness to move. Share with at least one person how God blessed you, and or improved your ministry after you moved. Personal Prayer: Father, thank You for another life-changing experience in Your Word. You are clearly in charge of moving people in the church beyond our comfort zones. Father, I desire to move beyond anything that will hinder my growth, and hinder the growth of ministry. Please show me the comfort zone you want me beyond. If I refuse to step out in obedience, move me. If I struggle with racism, move me. If I am easily exploited, move me. Whatever You want me to move from, move me. Strengthen me with Your Word, love, discernment, wisdom, and boldness, and move me. I live to love and serve You. In the name of Jesus, I pray, amen. 8
