Joshua 3:1-4:7 Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over. 2 After three days the officers went throughout the camp, 3 giving orders to the people: When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the Levitical priests carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it.

4 Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits between you and the ark; do not go near it. 5 Joshua told the people, Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do amazing things among you. 6 Joshua said to the priests, Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the people. So they took it up and went ahead of them.

7 And the LORD said to Joshua, Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses. 8 Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant: When you reach the edge of the Jordan s waters, go and stand in the river. 9 Joshua said to the Israelites, Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God.

10 This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites. 11 See, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead of you. 12 Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe.

13 And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the LORD the Lord of all the earth set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap. 14 So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them. 15 Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest.

Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water s edge, 16 the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan, while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho.

17 The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground. 1 When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua, 2 Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe,

3 and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from right where the priests are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight. 4 So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, 5 and said to them, Go over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan.

Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, 6 to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, What do these stones mean? 7 tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.

1) Move When God Moves (3:1-4)

Joshua 3:1-4 Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over.

Hebrews 9:4 This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant.

We are tempted to move when God has not moved or not move when God has moved. Those who wait for the presence of God to lead never make a wrong move

Acts 17:24-26 24 The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. 26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.

The Word of God shows us how God has moved in the past and helps us anticipate how God will move in the future

Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

Hebrews 13:17 Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.

If you living a self-dependent life, it likely means that you are not where God wants you to be

2) Expect the Miraculous (3:9-17)

Joshua 3:9-17 9 Joshua said to the Israelites, Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God.

The miraculous often takes place in that middle place between where we currently are and where God wants to take us

Exodus 14:21-22 21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the LORD drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, 22 and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.

The question is not whether you are brave enough to cross waters, the question is whether you are brave enough to trust God

3) Memorialize the Moment (4:1-7)

Joshua 4:1-7 1 When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua, 2 Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe, 3 and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from right where the priests are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.

4 So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, 5 and said to them, Go over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites,

6 to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, What do these stones mean? 7 tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.

Joshua 4:9 Joshua set up the twelve stones that had been in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day.

Joshua 4:20 And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan.

God performs miracles in every generation, but we have failed to memorialize His miracles. These memorials help connect us with those who came before us and those who will come after us

What are you teaching the next generation about God?

A) Teach Our Children (vs. 21-23)

Joshua 4:21-23 21 He said to the Israelites, In the future when your descendants ask their parents, What do these stones mean? 22 tell them, Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground. 23 For the LORD your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The LORD your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over.

B) Teach People of the Earth (vs. 24a)

Joshua 4:24a 24 He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the LORD is powerful

Whatever God is doing in your life is not just for you, but for the evangelization of the world

C) Teach Ourselves (vs. 24b)

Joshua 4:24b So that you might always fear the LORD your God.

There are many things in life Christian life that cannot be learned once, but need to learned over and over again

Let your Jordan inform your Jericho
