Isaiah 11
Isaiah 11 Is. 11:1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
Our hope for a real hero is fulfilled in Christ the righteous King.
I. Jesus has the right ancestry.
Is. 11:1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
Ezek. 34:23-24 And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. And I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them. I am the LORD; I have spoken.
Matt. 1:1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Rom. 1:1-3 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh
II. Jesus possesses the right anointing.
1Sam. 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
Is. 11:2a And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him,
Luke 3:21-22 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.
Acts 10:37-38 you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
Is. 11:2a And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
A. To rule wisely. the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
B. To rule with resolve. the Spirit of counsel and might,
C. To rule with reverent humility. the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord,
III. Jesus exercises a righteous reign.
Is. 11:3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
Is. 11:4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
Is. 11:5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins.
IV. Jesus will establish a righteous world.
A. Reconciliation of hostilities.
Is. 11:6-8 The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder s den.
B. Restoration of Creation.
Is. 11:9-10 They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. In that day the root of Jesse,
who shall stand as a signal for the peoples of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.
Rev. 20:6 Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.
V. Next Steps A. Honor Christ the King.
Mark 1:14-15 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.
