IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH WATERLOO, ILLINOIS Ash Wednesday Heart to Heart: Sackcloth and Ashes to Robes of Righteousness Wednesday, February 14, 2018 9:00 am & 7:30 pm Making more and stronger disciples of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Welcome to Immanuel! If you are a guest, please fill out a visitor s card located in the cardholder on the back of each pew. During the offering, place this card in the offering plate. As you leave, please introduce yourself to the pastors. Members, please help us love and care for one another by filling out one of our attendance cards. Remember to include all the members of your family who are present in worship today. If you are communing, please check in the appropriate place. Thank you for filling out an Attendance-Communion card every time you attend Church it helps us keep good records. We celebrate Holy Communion today! In this Supper of our Lord we receive the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the earthly forms of bread and wine for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Since this Holy Communion is also a sign of our common confession of the Christian faith, we welcome to the Lord s Table those who are confirmed members of our Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask the pastor before or after the service. Immanuel s Ash Wednesday morning service is designed to be a bit less formal than our evening service. This is the reason there are no ushers and only the chalice (common cup) is offered during Holy Communion. If you have concerns about using the chalice during Communion, we suggest you practice intinction. In this practice, you dip the host (bread) into the wine. The communicant receives both elements, but doesn t come into contact with the chalice. (7:30 pm only) If for health or personal reasons you cannot drink wine, the lighter colored glasses in the center of the tray of individual cups contain water with a drop of wine. These special glasses allow communicants to celebrate the Lord s Supper according to Christ s institution, but have a very small amount of alcohol. PRESERVICE MUSIC BELLS / WELCOME 1

OPENING HYMN, LSB 435, Come to Calvary s Holy Mountain Please stand INVOCATION AND OPENING SENTENCES P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. C: Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. P: For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. C: For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. P: I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; C: I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord, and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: O God, when we look back at our lives on this Ash Wednesday, we realize that we have failed in our faithfulness and broken your law. We turned away when we were able to do good. We have turned our backs on the poor and abandoned the helpless, the homeless, the broken and lonely. We have held anger against those who have hurt us, and failed to seek forgiveness from those we have hurt. Forgive us, O God. As we begin the journey of these 40 Lenten days, wash us completely, so that by the gift of forgiveness won for us by Jesus we shall be clean and made whole. Amen. P: Hear the Good News: The Lord, our God, is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love (Joel 2:13). God hears the cries of the repentant and forgives our sins. By our Lord s command I announce to you the forgiveness of all your sins. 2

Please be seated IMPOSITION OF ASHES Ashes have been a symbol of contrition since biblical times: I repent in dust and ashes (Job 42:6b). They are also vivid reminders of mortality: For dust you are and to dust you shall return (Genesis 3:19). Therefore the imposition of ashes has been a fitting beginning for the season of Lent. Ashes usually consist of the remains of the previous Palm Sunday's burned palms, and are applied to the forehead in the sign of the cross. Although powerfully speaking the law (contrition and mortality), ashes also speak the Gospel applied in the shape of the cross, where sin and death were conquered, and we are cleansed of our sin. (7:30 pm) CHOIR ANTHEM, Kyrie eleison (D. Mengel) OLD TESTAMENT READING, Joel 2:12-13 12 Yet even now, declares the LORD, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; 13 and rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the LORD, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE READING, Rev. 7:9-14 9 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb! 11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen. 13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come? 14 I said to him, Sir, you know. And he said to me, These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 3

Please stand HOLY GOSPEL, Matt. 6:1-6, 16-21 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 6 th chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. 1 [Jesus said:] Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 5 And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 16 [Jesus said:] And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 19 Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated HYMN OF THE DAY, LSB 563, Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness SERMON, Heart to Heart: Sackcloth and Ashes to Robes of Righteousness Please stand APOSTLES CREED All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day 4

he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH P: On this occasion, when we especially remember our sin and our mortality, let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Merciful Father, Your Son was tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. Give Your baptized children strength to withstand persecution and temptation. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Father, Your Son heard the devil twist the words of Holy Scripture and yet was not deceived. Give us pastors who will preach and teach Your Word accurately; and give us ears, minds, and hearts to receive that Word for our own defense, endurance, and confession of the true Christian faith; Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Lord God, king of the universe, You have chosen to provide for all people through earthly government and commerce. Give us rulers and business people who conduct all affairs within Your good and gracious law, so that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way, because this is pleasing in Your sight, and You desire all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Almighty God, there are many who would gladly extinguish Your Gospel and Your people. Cause our enemies to come to repentance and saving faith in Jesus, that they may live with us in peace. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. 5

P: Merciful Father, You know the trials and suffering of Your children. We ask You to care for our loved ones, (especially ). Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Father, Your Son gave His living and life-giving body and blood for us to eat and drink that through it forgiveness of sin, life and salvation would crowd out the death that we have inherited. Give us deep and abiding joy even during this penitential season. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Into Your hands, gracious Father, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen. Please be seated OFFERING [9:00 am - You may place your offering in the plate provided in the narthex before or after the service.] Please stand OFFERTORY, LSB 956, Create in Me 6

+ HOLY COMMUNION + PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who overcame the assaults of the devil and gave His life as a ransom for many that with cleansed hearts we might be prepared joyfully to celebrate the paschal feast in sincerity and truth. Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS HYMN, LSB 624 v. 1 & 7, The Infant Priest Was Holy Born 1997, 2003 Chad L. Bird. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License.NET, no. 100010322. 7 With cherubim and seraphim Our voices join the endless hymn, And Holy, holy, holy sing To Christ, God s Lamb, our Priest and King. heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION PAX DOMINI P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you. Please be seated DISTRIBUTION HYMNS (7:30 pm) Choir Anthem, Lord, We Will Remember Thee (C. Schalk) LSB 420, Christ, the Life of All the Living LSB 629, What Is This Bread Please stand DISMISSAL P: Now Go in peace. C: Amen. BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless thee and keep thee. The Lord make his face shine upon thee and be gracious unto thee. The Lord lift up His countenance upon thee and give thee peace. C: Amen. CLOSING HYMN, We Are Exiles from the Garden [Tune: LSB 451, Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted. Text: Lisa M. Clark 2017 Concordia Publishing House. All rights reserved. Used by permission.] We are exiles from the garden, Banished by our sinful choice, Terrified to seek His pardon, Hiding from our Father s voice. 8

Underneath the branches swaying, Sweat and blood fall to the ground. In the darkness, Christ is praying; He comes forward to be bound. Leaves will fail our vain concealing Our true nakedness and shame. We must rend our hearts, revealing All our guilt and sinful blame. Jesus takes our flesh and sentence As His clothes are claimed below. We fall down in true repentance; His new robe He will bestow. On the mount, the Lord is waiting For the proper sacrifice. What is worth His wrath abating? Who could pay the dreadful price? God the Son will be the scion. God the Father will provide. God the Spirit points to Zion; There, with God, we will abide. On this journey we are taking, We fear not what lies in store. Though our feeble wills are breaking, We know Christ has gone before. As we walk the way completed, On His throne, the Savior waits. Death and hell have been unseated. We behold the open gates! Lent is the journey we make as we travel with Christ from the Mount of Transfiguration to Jerusalem, where He will face the cross and the grave for our sake. This year s theme focuses upon the journey, though perhaps not in the way we usually walk it. Our overall theme is Return from Exile: A Lenten Journey. So, join us as we make this Lenten Journey together. All are welcome! Our midweek Lenten services will continue on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm.
