First Look January 15, 2017 January 2016, Week 3 Small Group, Preschool Basic Truth: Jesus wants to be my friend forever. Key Question: Who is there when you need Him? Bottom Line: Jesus is there when I need Him. Memory Verse: You are everything I need. Psalm 119:57, NIrV Bible Story Focus: Everyone needs Jesus. Make It Fun (Introductory Activities, 10 minutes) 1. Charades What You Need: Charades Activity Page What You Do: Before the Activity: Put the Charades cards onto the table. You should have six separate cards. During the Activity: Place the cards in a stack face down in the activity area. Have the children sit in a circle. Choose one child to go first. The child will choose the top card and act out the action on the card without talking. Encourage the other children to try to guess the action that the child is doing. (Consider taking a turn yourself before the children do to demonstrate the game.) Repeat the activity with the remaining cards by letting different children have a turn. Make sure all of the children have a turn by reusing the cards if necessary. After the Activity: Introduce the Bible story. What You Say: Before the Activity: We are going to play a game! Are you ready? During the Activity: Here is a stack of cards. (Point.) In this game you will draw a card and do the action on the card. You cannot talk, though! I will go first to show you. (Demonstrate.) Great job! Now it s your turn! You will use your eyes to watch your friends act and you will use your ears to listen to all of the guesses. Are you ready? (Do activity.) After the Activity: Great job! It s so much fun to play games. God gave us senses to be able to do things. He gave us eyes to see with and EARS to listen with. Just like we saw our friends acting today and heard what our other friends were guessing. Today our Bible story is about a man who could not hear and he couldn t talk. I m excited for you to hear it! 2. Bible Story Read Jesus Heals a Deaf Man Gospel Light Story Page. Curriculum Materials for 3- through 5-year-olds 2015 The rethink Group. First Look January 2016, Week 3 Small Group, Preschool Make It Stick (Application Activities, 15 minutes) 1. Jesus is for Everyone What You Need: Bookmark, hearts, crayons, I love you hands, glue stick What You Do: Before the Activity: Give each child a bookmark and three I love you hands. During the Activity: Allow the children to decorate the bookmark and color the hands. Then help them glue the hands to the bookmark and give each child a heart for each hand to add to their bookmark. After the Activity: Allow kids to take their bookmarks home. What You Say: Before the Activity: Have you ever wondered how to say I love you to someone who can t hear? Well I m going to teach you! (teach kids the ASL sign for I love you. ) To help us remember how to say I love you in sign language, we re going to make a bookmark! During the Activity: Here are some bookmarks and some I love you hands to decorate. What are the hands saying again? That s right, they re saying I love you! Jesus loves you very much and Jesus is always there when we need Him! After the Activity: Great job! I love how you decorated your bookmarks! Do you remember how to say I love you in sign language? Let s practice it together. Good job! Make sure to teach your parents how to say I love you in sign language on your way home! 2. Books of the Bible What You Do: Review the books of the Bible, Matthew 2 Thessalonians, with the children. Practice saying them in funny voices (whispering, squeaking like a mouse, etc.), motor activity (jumping, marching, etc.), or with hand motions (clapping, chomping like an alligator, etc.). What You Say: OK, now we are going to learn the New Testament Books of the Bible. Do you know who we learn about in the New Testament? That s right! We learn about Jesus! Let s practice! Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 1 & 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1&2 Thessalonians. Can you say it with me? First Look January 2016, Week 3 Small Group, Preschool Make It Real (Small Group Application & Prayer, 5 minutes) Small Group Time What You Need: Memory Verse Card, prayer journal and a pen. SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): We ve heard a lot of stories about people who needed Jesus. There was the man who couldn t see, the man who couldn t walk, and today s story was about a man who couldn t hear or talk. It seems like everyone needs Jesus! Hey! Everyone DOES need Jesus! I need Jesus. You need Jesus. We all need Jesus! It s a good thing Jesus is there when we need Him. Who is there when you need Him? CHILDREN and SGL: [Bottom Line] Jesus is there when I need Him! SGL: Yay! Jesus is there when we need Him! Today when we practice our Bible verse, I want us to say it to Jesus, like a prayer. You are everything I need, Psalm 119:57. Let s say that to Jesus together with the motions. Here we go! CHILDREN and SGL: You are (point up) everything (hands out to sides) I need (point thumbs to chest), Psalm 119:57. (Open your hands like a book.) (Repeat the verse with the motions several times together.) SGL: So sweet. Jesus is everything we need. And that s why we re going to make a list of people who need Jesus. When I write down your name, I want you to tell me one person to put on our list. You can put anyone you want on our list, because everyone needs Jesus! They can be a famous person who plays sports, someone who sings, or someone who is on TV or in movies. They can be a person in your neighborhood, a doctor, a teacher, a family member, a coach, or even the president of the United States! Because everyone needs Jesus! (Open prayer journal and hold your fun pen. Write each child s name and what they say beside their name. Remember to print the words they say so the children can recognize their names and the letters. Be prepared for some children to name fictional characters or people. That s okay.) This is a super, great list of people. Would anyone like to pray for their person before I pray? (Give each child who wants to pray the opportunity to do so.) Now I will pray. First Look January 2016, Week 3 Small Group, Preschool Prayer SGL: Dear God, we all need Jesus. I need Jesus. [Child s name] needs Jesus. [Another child s name] needs Jesus. (Repeat with each child s name.) Our families, friends, and everyone on our list need Jesus. Today we pray that (read the people on the list) will go to You whenever they need someone, because You are all they need. We love You, God. In Jesus name, amen. Get Ready to Dismiss (Think ORANGE) Place take-home creations and this month s Parent Cue in each child s paper bag. Greet parents at the door and tell them that this month preschoolers are learning that [Bottom Line] Jesus is there when I need Him. Encourage parents to repeat the Bottom Line at home and help their child understand that [Bottom Line] Jesus is there when I need Him.
