Bishop Burbidge asks all parishioners to join the Church in responding to the needs of the poor through prayer and direct action. Pastor s Letter The Wise Shall Shine Brightly This Sunday s readings are somehow unsettling: it shall be a time unsurpassed in distress, since nations began until that time (Dan 12:1), or Jesus himself: "In those days after that tribulation the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light (Mk 13:24). And rightly so. When someone goes to face charges at the court of law knowing that he is guilty and the judge is just, he is deeply distressed. Today s readings talk about Jesus coming to judge the living and the dead. To help us to pass the test, Jesus gave us the questions ahead: I was hungry and you gave me food (Mt 25:35). How are we preparing for this test? Thus, we will not be asked about success, wealth, popularity or accomplishments. Neither if we created safe environments for us and others. We will be asked if we loved God and neighbor with a whole heart. If we set God first and gave him the primacy in our lives. Jesus reminds that Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away (Mk 13:31). Therefore, the solid foundation for my life is Jesus himself, his word. The world with all its glamour will pass away. Therefore as we consider the hereafter: death, judgment, purgatory, heaven, hell we can ask ourselves about the foundation we are building on. Today it is difficult to find a place of silence. Screens are taking a big part of our lives. Nielsen reports that in 2016 the average TV time in the US was five hours a day per person. If we add the use of smartphones, especially in younger people Who are we listening to? Whose word do we hear and follow? Thanksgiving will give us a little break from business and give us an opportunity to put by side screens and just enjoy our family. Let s take it seriously. Let s make some silence. Let s disconnect from technology to connect with others, with real human beings who care for us and love us. And that train us for another personal connection: to connect with God. Let s put aside time for prayer. And let s pray and consider lifestyle, desires, things that take my focus, time and energy Are they things that last or that pass away? Am I building on solid foundations or on sand? And a last thought: when celebrating Thanksgiving Day, remember president Lincoln s proclamation, encouraging us to give thanks to God: The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God (October 3, 1863). 3 Prayers To Say For The Holy Souls In Purgatory The Catholic Church dedicates the entire month of November to the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Our prayers are needed for those souls who have passed on to eternity, yet are still awaiting entrance into heaven. The Eternal Rest (Requiem Aeternam) Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. The Prayer of St. Gertrude Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen. The Fatima Prayer O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Your Mercy. Amen. Page 3

Nourishing Our Souls With Holy Scripture Readings for Next Week Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Dn 7:13-14 Ps 93:1, 1-2, 5 Rv 1:5-8 Jn 18:33B-37 Stewardship Corner Our parish planning study has been underway for two weeks now. The purpose of the study is to share with parishioners a vision for parish facilities improvements, and to get your feedback on those proposed improvements. Some parishioners will participate in an in-person interview, while many parishioners will receive a link to complete an online survey. We thank you for your participation and honest feedback! On a separate note, we once again thank all those parishioners who made a pledge to our recent offertory program. Roughly 18% of our giving households (approx. 200 families) made a pledge averaging $30 per week. The parish does not issue pledge statements to parishioners for these commitments. Rather, they are made personally and prayerfully by each parish family as a matter of offering our first fruits to God. For the parish office, it helps us in our financial planning and stewardship of parish resources for parishioners to make a weekly or monthly commitment, however small or large it may be. And so you are still encouraged to complete an envelope - available in the back of the church - if you haven't already. Thank you for supporting our parish family! The Annual Women s Group Gift, Jewelry, and Bake Sale is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 2 after all morning Masses in Hannan Hall. There will be a nice selection of Gift Items, Jewelry, and delicious Baked Goods. This year the famous Bean Soup Mix will be available. Please plan to visit and support the fund raising for the charitable work of the Women's Group. ACCA (Annandale Christian Community for Action) Anyone wishing to participate in the ACCA Holiday Basket/Adopt a Family Thanksgiving or Christmas giving should contact Mary Lee Di Spirito at (703) 256-9513 or ddmld@verizon.net for more information. Please include your name, address and phone number. QofA Parish Secretary Position QofA is currently seeking a full-time Secretary for our Parish Office. The Parish Secretary will be responsible for providing administrative support to the Pastor, priests, and church staff. Some duties include: answering phone calls, maintaining sacramental records, assisting with the coordination of baptisms, weddings & funerals, and creating a warm, welcoming, family inspired atmosphere to all those who come to the Parish Office. Candidate must be a practicing Catholic, bilingual in English and Spanish, and have excellent organizational and communications skills. Prior secretarial experience is preferred. For a complete job description and application, please visit the parish website at. Please send cover letter and resume to Flora Wack, Office Supervisor via email to f.wack@queenofapostles.org.
