Steeple Notes February 2019 Page 2 I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:3-6 These words of St. Paul to the church at Philippi are truly heartfelt! They are words that express my love and thankfulness to all of you at Good Hope as you helped me celebrate my 35 th anniversary of ordination. It was truly a special event in my life thanks to you! I appreciate the cards, gifts, hugs and expressions of your partnership in ministry that we share here at Good Hope. TOWN MEETINGS AND ANNUAL MEETING As with each February, it is time for our annual meeting, adopting a new budget and planning for a new year of ministry. This year we are offering two Town Meeting times so that everyone has a chance, in a small group setting, to ask questions and to share comments. The Town Meetings will be the week before the annual meeting. They are scheduled for Tuesday, February 5 th at 4pm and Thursday, February 7 th at 7pm in the church auditorium. These meetings offer everyone an opportunity to talk with finance and leadership folks in a smaller venue prior to the annual meeting which is on Sunday, February 10 th at 9:30am. In several of the congregations I have served, Town Meetings have been good opportunities to communicate with a broader range of people who are interested in the financial and ministry decisions that the church council and treasurer are making. I hope that you find these meetings to be informative and a way to open up communication. Bring your questions, joys and concerns. We are the body of Christ and we want to be fully open and engaged with everyone especially you! In His Service, Pastor Renee WE ARE BELOVED TO BE LOVED BY GOD For Jesus sake, a promise is given to us in baptism, along with a new name, Child of God. It is a promise of love and life, as the Lord creates for us a new beginning. It is a powerful name- Beloved Child- and our new life has new meaning and purpose as we share the light and love of Jesus with those around us.

Steeple Notes February 2019 Page 3 Daily Bible Readings and Bible Study at the Pelican Are you reading the Bible every day? Have you read the creation story? Have you read the story of Joseph and his beautiful coat? Have you been struck by the scandals, the brokenness and the redemption that are themes all through Genesis? If not, join the readings! Read the Bible in 2019 from cover to cover. You ll need to read approximately 3-4 chapters per day as are specified by the sheet provided in the narthex at church. It s really very interesting! Then, come and join us in the backroom at the Pelican for coffee, tea, cookies and discussion! There are 10-12 people faithfully coming each week. We laugh together, work through questions and enjoy the week s readings. It s really great fun! Join us! Lent is Coming: A Study of Philippians The season of Lent begins very late this year! Ash Wednesday is on March 6 th and Easter is on April 21 st. For the mid-week Lenten worship services, we will focus on Paul s letter to the Philippians. The basis for Lenten themes each week is the book Because of This I Rejoice by Max O. Vincent. Here are the themes for each week: Ash Wednesday God invites and transforms Lent 1 Midweek Prayer Lent 2 Midweek Sharing the Gospel Lent 3 Midweek - Mutual Humility Lent 4 Midweek Hospitality and Service Lent 5 Midweek Practice, Practice, Practice Lent 6 Midweek Think on These Things It is my prayer that you will draw closer to God as we take a little time out of our normal schedules to reflect and renew ourselves during the season of Lent. This is always a wonderful time to prepare for God s greatest gift the gift of His Son dying on the cross for all of us. Worship Window The Posture of Worship Have you ever thought about your posture at worship? When the youth went to Quake on the weekend of January 11-13, one of the speakers talked about the posture of prayer. Most of us bow our heads, fold our hands and close our eyes. But he went on to say that this habit is not the only way to pray. You can pray with your eyes OPEN. You can pray with your head looking straight or upward. You can pray with your hands lifted or simply on your lap. God will hear all of our prayers regardless of our posture. Worship is similar. Sometimes we stand. Sometimes we sit. Sometimes it seems we bury our heads in our bulletins. One of the goals of having more of worship on the wall is that it helps us to lift our heads and our eyes so that we look up praising God with a posture of openness. As the youth worshiped at Quake, the words to every song were projected on the screen so that they could sing along. Hands were free. There was no paper to hold (or to need to recycle). You could clap, you could embrace your neighbor, you could simply hold your hands at your side and look up. What is your favorite posture of worship? Some of us our limited by our bodies. We cannot stand. Or we cannot kneel. God fully understands these realities. Our hearts and our lives are still in the right place whether we worship by listening to the radio service or if we are in worship on Sunday morning. The posture of worship that is most important is the posture of your heart. Be open to receive the Good News of Jesus Christ coming in many forms to love and embrace us!

IF: Gathering on March 8, 2019 Local leaders are hosting a rebroadcast gathering of the If: Gathering held in Dallas, Texas in February. The event is sponsored by BORN (Bucyrus Outreach and Restoration Network. Place: Bucyrus Nazarene Church Time: 8 AM 8 PM For more information or to register contact: BORN at 419-56-2150 or bucyrusborn@gmail.com Isaac s Piggy Bank La alcancia de Isaac Meet Isaac Schaaf. Isaac is 7 years young. Late last year, Isaac saw an article his mother had printed for a church gathering. The article pictured a boy about Isaac s age and a picture of the aftermath from the earthquakes that devastated parts of Mexico. After asking a lot of questions, Isaac looked at the picture of the little boy again, and said, Mama we have to do something! He disappeared to his room and returned with $12 from his piggy bank, wrote a card and said, Please send this to Mexico, I bet it will be a big help. Isaac s mother sent in his gift by way of the Synod Global Mission Board. At a recent Global Mission Board meeting, this act of generosity was lifted-up, and a spontaneous match of Isaac s $12 gift instantly became $84. God s math does not add, it multiplies! Your Global Mission Board (GMB) is in the process of establishing its third companionship, this time with the Lutheran Church in Mexico. Several of their churches sustained damage in the earthquakes, and a request for help was made. The GMB is responding to this request by starting a campaign called Isaacs s Piggy Bank asking for a matching gift of $12 to be used to help with the long-term earthquake recovery activities and construction repairs of some of these buildings. The campaign will begin in February and run through the Lenten Season. Let s all do our part by reaching into our own piggy banks to help the cause For more information, please see Pastor Renee or Maggy Everett

And come that day to learn more about it. GIFTS FOR OESTERLEN DELIVERED Elwood and I barely had room for our suitcase when we left Bucyrus for a visit to my niece in Glen Carbon, Illinois, on January 6, and Good Hope members are the reason for this. We decided to stop by Springfield to drop off your donations to the children at Oesterlen; they filled up my Kia Sportage! The ladies who received your gifts were overwhelmed and so thankful as was I Thankful not overwhelmed, because I know how generous and caring my Good Hope Family is. Your support on all WELCA missions is the only way they can be successful. You are a blessing to so many! Sarah I have placed the Oesterlen Herald for December on the WELCA cupboard in the narthex if you are interested in reading a few articles about this facility. CARDS SENT TO THOSE AT HOME Cards sent to some members of Good Hope will be centered around a verse of a wellknown hymn. The hymn for the January card was Rejoice for Christ Is King; the February one will be The King of Love My Shepherd Is. Each member on our list will receive one to three cards per year. If you know of anyone who should be on this list or if you want to check to see if someone has been included, call Sarah (562-9455.) Our mission is to let members, who can t be with us at worship or who have had a long and difficult time for some reason, know that they are still remembered and loved by us and that God is always by their side.
