Advent is the time to start praying differently. This is the time when the world is meant to fall silent before the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God and pray for healing and reform. We ve been through a lot together as a parish family in 2018. I was installed as your pastor by Bishop Nelson in April of this year and we immediately faced the Legionnaires crisis which lasted for several months. In the midst of educating the parish on the events surrounding the legionella outbreak and attempting to bring folks back to church and heal, the Catholic Church was again thrust into round two of the clergy sexual abuse crisis which began back in 2002. The abominable actions of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the PA grand jury report, and the Archbishop Vigano letter and the Pope s nonresponse have brought great shame and humiliation to the Catholic Faith we love so much. I am filled with hope because Christ our King is coming to renew us! In the midst of this tumultuous and shameful time in history, God is acting in new ways. Never forget that God takes on human flesh and blood through the messy and difficult lives of a human family, Mary and Joseph, and the world is changed forever. Luke s Gospel reminds us Be vigilant at all times and pray. As your pastor, it is my responsibility to lead you to Jesus and I trust that Jesus will inspire you to lead our Church to new beginnings. Jesus will heal and reform the Church in extraordinarily new ways, just stop, listen and wait. Night Prayer and Adoration is the first step to healing. Advent Night Prayer and Adoration Beginning this Sunday, December 2nd, at 9:00 p.m. in church, I invite everyone to spend just 20 minutes with me praying Night Prayer before Jesus in the Exposed Blessed Sacrament. I will continue praying Night Prayer at 9:00 p.m. on the three remaining Sundays of Advent (December 9th, December 16th, and December 23rd) leading up to Christmas. No experience or materials required. God transforms hearts one person at a time through an encounter with our Eucharistic Lord. If you want to understand who you are and what you are made for, spend time with me in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Jesus will tell you who you are, what you are made for and our world will start to change one person at a time. Never forget, the Lord is with us always! Saturday, December 8 Advent Weekday 4:00 p.m. Irene, John, John, Jr. and Elmer Torok 5:30 p.m. Eddie Hassing Sunday December 9 Second Sunday of Advent Bar 5:1-9/Phil 1:4-6, 8-11/Lk 3:1-6 7:30 a.m. Mary Rose Rubeck 9:00 a.m. Igino & Elsa Ceraldi 10:30 a.m. Giovanni Manocchio 12:00 p.m. Jack & Sharyn Wiedor PARISH FINANCIAL NOTES The offertory collection for the weekend of November 24th and 25th was $16,428.38. The second half of November s Faith Direct contributions were $4,982.00. God bless each of you for your continued support and generosity to our parish. 2.

Father Suso invites everyone to spend just 20 minutes with him praying Night Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours before Jesus in the Exposed Blessed Sacrament. If you want to understand who you are and what you are made for, spend time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Jesus will tell you who you are and what you are made for and our world will start to change.one person at a time. Father will continue to pray Night Prayers every Sunday of Advent: December 2nd, December 9th, December 16th and December 23rd, leading up to Christmas. Get your soul ready for Christmas! FATHER JAMIE S HEALING HUMOR Religion teacher, How many Sacraments are there, children? All agreed there were seven except little Sue, who shook her head No. Teacher, Well, Sue, what s wrong? Sue, There ain t any more sacraments. My aunt received the last sacraments two days ago. (from JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, VOL. 1, by Msgr. Arthur Tonne, 1983) There sure are sacraments today and every day. We Catholics believe that Jesus gave us the sacraments as living signs that make God s abiding and saving love real and present to us. The Advent Season celebrates Jesus as Emmanuel, God-with-us, as He came in the flesh over two thousand years ago; as He comes to us in word, sacrament and church today; and as He will come to us as Lord at the end of time. OPLATKY (CHRISTMAS WAFERS) Oplatky will be for sale in the church vestibule after the Vigil and Sunday Masses, December 1st and 2nd and December 8th and 9th. FAITH EVENTS MEN OF MERCY Did you know there is a Men s group in our Parish who feeds the hungry, shelters the homeless, buries the dead and performs other Corporal Works of Mercy? The Men of Mercy have donated thousands of dollars to needy individuals and families in our area. Here are just a few of the causes that we have supported thus far: o Paid the airfare for a young girl to attend her close friend s mother s funeral here in Cleveland. Both of these young girls lost their mothers in a 2-month period, and Sara, wanting to be there for support, couldn t afford the airfare from New York. o Paid a local resident s security deposit for her new apartment. She is a single mom, recently diagnosed with stomach cancer, and is raising a handicapped son. o Donated $300.00 to a fundraiser for a 5-year old Parma Heights girl diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Comprised of over 50 local area men, we meet right here at Saint Columbkille. If you are looking for a Ministry that is making a real difference and doesn t require a huge time commitment (we meet only 4 times a year!), please consider joining our ranks! To learn more about the Men of Mercy, please join us at our next quarterly meeting on Sunday, December 9th at 1:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. Refreshments will be served. For more information, please contact Gary Minjock at (216) 408-3242. BERARDI S FRESH ROAST St. Columbkille is working with local roaster, Berardi s Fresh Roast, to bring fresh coffee to your home, while helping to support St. Columbkille School. Berardi s is a pure specialty roaster with a unique style and a passion for freshness. To maintain their high standards and reputation, they search worldwide for the best available beans. They protect the quality of those beans by custom-roasting daily and shipping within 24 hours of roasting. Order forms are available at the School and the Rectory. Specialty fall blends are available through November 25th. Please contact Holly at (440) 668-5554 or Hdavidson.scs@ gmail.com with questions. COOKING MINISTRY On Sunday, December 16th, the St. Columbkille Cooking Ministry will host a cookie baking event from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. in the St. Columbkille School kitchen. FAITH IN ACTION YOUTH GROUP NEWS Bonfires/discussion will continue, weather permitting, on Wednesday nights behind the school from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Check our webpage or contact mr.chris.zgrabik@ gmail.com to get on the mailing list. Youth Renewal Team: Attention all high school students The St. Columbkille Youth Renewal Team is an incredible way to grow in your own faith, and is always a lot of fun. The team is looking for students grades 9-12 who would like to lead others in exploring their faith and developing bonds that will last a lifetime. This is an exciting and fantastic opportunity to grow in your own faith while leading others to Christ. Typically, we require that anyone who wants to serve on the Team have attended at least one Youth Renewal in the past, however, if you have retreat experience, we encourage you to come to the meeting. Any questions or for more information, please contact Mr. Zgrabik at mr.chris. zgrabik@gmail.com. Advent Night of Reflection: Attention, all youth, join us for a night of reflection on Wednesday, December 5th, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., as we reflect on Advent as a season of contemplation, preparation and expectation. In contrast to the rush towards Christmas in the culture around us, Advent offers a real opportunity to slow down and tune into those things that we might miss in our busy lives. Join us for reflection, food and faith. We will meet in the school circle. WARM UP AMERICA The ladies of Warm Up America want to thank all the people who so generously donated yarn and storage bins to keep our mission going. We donated 1,518 hats, scarves, baby items and afghans to bring a little sunshine to others. Help us keep our mission going by joining us knitting or crocheting at your pace. Donations of yarn are always appreciated. There will not be a meeting in December, so enjoy the holidays with friends and family. See you on January 21st, 2019. For information, please call Lois at (216) 524-6735. Here is a free offer. Come join us for an hour or two. We meet twice a month. We do not collect dues or record attendance. Instead, we talk about life and values. We learn from each other s experiences. We are excited to read short religious articles. We listen to a song or two (but do not sing along). We are not afraid to pray out loud. We are not holy yet, but maybe you can help improve us. Here is your opportunity to talk or just listen. It is usually the first and third Tuesday nights of every month, from 7:15 to 9:00 p.m. Come join us this Tuesday, December 4th, in the Parish Center. Questions? Please call Ron Snyder at (216) 396-1200. 30TH ANNUAL APPALACHIAN COLLECTION The 30th Annual Appalachian Collection occurred on Saturday, September 22, 2018 and was a great success. God blessed us with seasonal fall weather, a wonderful group of volunteers and a steady stream of donations. The St. Vincent de Paul Society of the Cleveland Diocese, the recipient of this year s collection, would like to thank all those who donated their time and items to make the event a success. In addition, a generous donation of $60.00 cash was collected and provided to St. Vincent de Paul. We would like to thank all our volunteers and especially the youth who participated and inspired. We would like to thank our sponsors: St. Basil the Great, Heinen s, Cover It Freight and Our Lady of Charity Knights of Columbus 14406 for their invaluable assistance. AROUND TOWN PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! BE CAREFUL IN OUR PARKING LOT With the lack of sunlight in the mornings and evenings, along with poor driving habits of people using our parking lot at those times, conditions are much more hazardous than necessary. It has been reported there are many cars being operated at excessive speeds, as well as a major lack of attention to people walking into or out of the church. When entering the north drive, please follow the traffic pattern by bearing to the right of the parking lot island. The lane to the immediate left of the island is for use by those who are exiting the parking lot via the north drive. The south drive also has a three-way stop, for those turning left or right from the drive, which is routinely ignored. As the winter months approach, and the darkness deepens, PLEASE use extreme caution and reduced speeds. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE THANK-YOU! Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2018 Fall Campaign of 40 Days for Life. God blessed the campaign and we know 592 babies, mothers and families were spared from abortion, including the 2 babies in Cleveland/Painesville. There were 4 more abortion workers converted and 3 more abortion facilities that closed. Cumulatively, over the 11 years of 40 Days for Life, there have been 15,235 babies lives spared from abortion, 181 converted abortion workers and 99 abortion facility closures. Praise God! We look forward to praying with you from March 6th through April 14th in the 2019 spring campaign. God bless you and thank you!
