The Monthly Messenger A Note From The Pastor... Thirty years ago, Gary Dahl was working on an idea. After reading a book about puppies and how to take care of them, he was surprised at the amount of the instructions. Returning home from Mexico with a truckload of stones for which he paid a penny a piece, he marketed a scheme which would become the holiday sensation of 1975. You might remember it...the Pet Rock. It cost $4.00 and made Gary Dahl a very rich man. The secret was not the rock, but the 36 page instruction manual that advised people about caring for their pet rock. Since then, Dahl has tried to replicate his success - with no success! But he is writing a book about the Pet Rock that is supposed to come out in the fall. Perhaps it will catch on. The Pet Rock was a fad - a trendy sensation that was red hot for an instant, and then blue cold the next. The world is like that. We go from one thing to the next thing, and we will give someone his or her 15 minutes of fame but then move on to create the next celebrity. And so on. News from the United Methodist Women Spring is about preparing for the future. When I read this, I thought this is what the UMW is all about at this point in time. We need to prepare and decide about the future of the UMW. We had a wonderful morning on 4/29 at the Time Out Café filled with good food, fellowship and a planning session. I was relieved to find there are many UMW who want to see the group continue and are very willing to help. After the meeting Myrna Streb called me and said she would take Vice President if I was staying President. Boy! Did I hear the Halleluiah Chorus singing? This is a blessing and I know with Myrna s help and everyone else helping WE Will Succeed! Thank you to everyone who made the effort to come to the breakfast and the ones who couldn t make it who told me they would be willing to help also. God does answer prayers! How and when things happen in our lives can surprise us. A few weeks ago Don, Garrick and I made a weekend trip to Garrick s home in Missouri. The first night there we went to an auction. Don and I decided to get some supper. It was a nice and warm evening so we sat at the picnic table they provided at the auction. After we ate, Don went to look over items going up for auction the next day and I sat at the table. There was a lady sitting in a pick-up close by and I got to watching her. I realized she was crocheting. I went over to her and started visiting. She told me she was making a prayer shawl for her church. She showed me the one she was working on and it was a brilliant green with a colorful variegated yarn intertwined. It was smaller than most prayer shawls and she said the reason was because it was going to be given to a child. I can t remember how many she and another lady had made but I remember saying, Wow. I told her we have some very talented ladies in our church who make prayer shawls also. That started a very nice visit with a lady named, Julia. She had shared with me she was getting over bronchitis and that was why she was in the truck while her husband was at the sale. She didn t want to catch any more germs. We talked till Don came back and I was getting tired standing because of the Lyme disease so we went to the truck to rest. When I walked away, she said she would pray for me and that God didn t want to see me sick. I told her likewise and I that I would pray she would stay well. While Don and I were resting and reading, a knock came on the truck window. It was Julia and she handed me a small little plastic bag. In the bag was a small yellow rectangle made of yarn with nubs forming a cross. Julia said it was a prayer swatch which she makes to give to people to let them know she will pray for them. I was so taken aback that all I could do was reply a very surprised and grateful thank you. I will probably never see her again but I know she is praying for me. I carry that little swatch with me and remember her with comforting thoughts and prayers. An email came from a friend which I think has thoughts we should all find helpful in our lives. It is titled, Life s Priorities & Successes. 1. Today, I interviewed my grandmother for part of a research paper I m working on for my Psychology class. When I asked her to define success in her own words, she said, Success is when you look back at your life and the memories make you smile. 2. Today I asked my mentor a very successful business man in his 70 s what his top three tips are for success. He smiled and said, Read something no one else is reading, think of something no one else is thinking, and do something no one else is doing. 3. Today, after my 72 hour shift at the fire station, a woman ran up to me at the grocery store and gave me a hug. When I tensed up, she realized I didn t recognize her. She let go with tears of joy in her eyes and the most sincere smile and said, Page 6 The Monthly Messenger
On 9-11- 2011, you carried me out of the World Trade Center. 4. Today, after I watched my dog get run over by a car, I sat on the side of the road holding him and crying. And just before he died, he licked the tears off my face. 5. Today at 7AM, I woke up feeling ill, but decided I needed the money, so I went into work. At 3PM I got laid off. On my drive home I got a flat tire. When I went into the trunk for the spare, it was flat, too. A man in a BMW pulled over, gave me a ride, we chatted, and then he offered me a job. I start tomorrow. 6. Today, as my father, three brothers, and two sisters stood around my mother s hospital bed, my mother uttered her last coherent words before she died. She simply said, I feel so loved right now. We should have gotten together like this more often. 7. Today I kissed my dad on the forehead as he passed away in a small hospital bed. About five seconds after he passed, I realized it was the first time I had given him a kiss since I was a little boy. 8. Today, in the cutest voice, my 8-year old daughter asked me to start recycling. I chuckled and asked, Why? Great and marvelous are you deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the ages. (Revelation 15:3 NIV) She re plied, So you can help me save the planet. I chuckled again and asked, And why do you want to save the planet? Because that s where I keep all my stuff. 9. Today, when I witnessed a 27-year old breast cancer patient laughing hysterically at her 2-year old daughter s antics, I suddenly realized that I need to stop complaining about my life and start celebrating it. 10. Today, a boy in a wheelchair saw me desperately struggling on crutches with my broken leg and offered to carry my backpack and books for me. He helped me all the way across campus to my class and as he was leaving he said, I hope you feel better soon. 11. Today I was feeling down because the results of a biopsy came back malignant. When I got home I opened an email that said, Thinking of you to day. If you need me, I m a phone call away. It was from a high school friend I hadn t seen in 10 years. 12. Today, I was traveling in Kenya and I met a refugee from Zimbabwe. He said he hadn t eaten anything in over three days. He looked extremely skinny and unhealthy. Then my friend offered him the rest of the sandwich he was eating. The first thing the man said was, We can share it. The last thought is, The best sermons are lived, not preached. There are many thoughts here as to how we should be living and doing things in our lives for others. One last thought of mine is don t put things off which are so easy to do. Malone Resident Bishop Gary George Assistant to the Bishop April 29, 2017 Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I write this letter first and foremost to call upon all East Ohio clergy and churches to pray unceasingly as we, The United Methodist Church, commit ourselves to faithfully live out our mission, unity and connection while we continue to struggle together with the seemingly uncrossable impasse related to human sexuality. I remind us that, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. As a bishop of The United Methodist Church, I am committed to the unity of the Church and the flourishing of its mission. One of the instruments of this unity is the Council of Bishops Commission on a Way Forward. I trust that the Holy Spirit is at work in the leadership and the conferencing of both the Commission and the Council. The Commission on a Way Forward is accountable to the Council of Bishops and, through the Council, to the General Conference. The Council of Bishops has called a special session of the General Conference for February 23-26, 2019 in St. Louis, Missouri. The purpose of this session shall be limited to receiving and acting upon a report from the Council of Bishops, based on the recommendations of the Commission on a Way Forward. I also write to inform you that on Friday, April 28 the Judicial Council, the Church s highest court, ruled on the South Central Jurisdiction s request for a declaratory decision, in response to the 2016 election and consecration of Bishop Karen Oliveto by the Western Jurisdictional Conference. The Judicial Council ruled that the consecration of a gay bishop violates church law, but it also stated that Bishop Oliveto remains in good standing until an administrative or judicial process is completed. This decision means Bishop Oliveto will continue as a bishop of the Church until such a process is completed. This ruling does not affect the Page 8 The Monthly Messenger
work of the Commission on a Way Forward because the Commission works concurrently with other legal, legislative, and supervisory processes. As we receive the Judicial Council s ruling, we recognize that there are no winners. I am reminded of these words from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr: We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be We are the beloved community of Christ. When one part of the body hurts and suffers, we all hurt and suffer. Therefore, let us pray for Bishop Karen Oliveto, her spouse Robin, the Mountain Sky Area, the Judicial Council, the Commission on a Way Forward, and the entire United Methodist Church. While we wait in hope and in great anticipation of the Holy Spirit guiding us and leading us forward, I offer this prayer from Ephesians 3:14-21: For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen. Finally, let us stay encouraged and stay focused on the mission of Christ and his Church. Let us remember to keep the main thing the main thing. We are to: make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world; love the Lord with all our heart, our soul, our mind and our strength and love our neighbors as ourselves; and act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God. Dylan Domer, 19, was honored recently as the 2017 Wayne County recipient of the R. A. Horn Outstanding Achievement Award for a Student. Dylan attends a satellite classroom of the Ida Sue School at John R. Lea in the Southeast Local School District. He will graduate this spring. Dylan is described as an excellent student, and a hard worker with a contagious can do attitude. He has a disarming smile that comes from his toes, wrote speech pathologist Judy Thompson. When he smiles, his whole body smiles. If you are having a bad day and experience his smile, you are better for it. Dylan is the greeter/ticket taker at the door of his church for fish fry dinners. He has been an active member of Boy Scouts and he has traveled to another troop to advocate for individuals with disabilities. *************************************************************************************** The youth painted these stones to hand out on Easter Sunday after the service.
